Earth vs. the Spider (a.k.a. The Spider) is an independently made 1958 American black-and-white science fiction horror film produced and directed by Bert I. Gordon, and stars Ed Kemmer, June Kenney and Eugene Persson.
In this giant-creature feature, a man drives into town to buy a birthday present for his teenage daughter Carol, and meets a horrific catastrophe. The next day, Carol enlists the help of her boyfriend Mike, to track down her dad. The kids trace his path to an eerie cave containing a super-sized spider and barely escape with their lives. Naturally, the sheriff doubts their story until it's too late, and the tarantula has taken over the town.
FYI:
The film's original on-screen title was Earth vs. the Spider, but when The Fly (also released in 1958) became a blockbuster, the title was shortened to just The Spider on all of the advertising material. The original screen title, however, was never changed, so the film is frequently referred to by the title Earth vs. the Spider.
The city block that Carol and Mike walk down at the beginning of the movie is part of the famous Universal Courthouse Square backlot, seen in countless films over seven decades. The street this block runs along is the very same one that Marty McFly [Back To The Future] uses to catch the lightning bolt charge and return to 1985 in his DeLorean.
Some of the cave interiors were filmed using stills from Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, with live action scenes filmed at Bronson Caves in Griffith Park near Los Angeles.
Special effects expert Paul Blaisdell created a life-size giant spider leg to use in the film, as well as a desiccated, mummy-like corpse that was used to represent the Spider's victims in several scenes. The same dummy was used to film both the dead truck driver from the beginning of the film as well as a deputy sheriff; all that was required was a change of clothes on the mannequin.

00:03:29Now, where didn't he come home from last night?
00:03:42Well, he went to Springdale yesterday to buy me a present. He said he'd be back before dinner last night, but he still hasn't come back yet.
00:03:49Well, that doesn't mean a thing, Carol. I mean, it isn't the first time.
00:03:53You're mean, Mike. And I don't want your silly present either. Here!
00:03:57The electrons jump from one electrode to the other because of the difference in the electrical potential between the two poles.
00:04:18Now, this one is the negative pole, which is the positive pole.
00:04:27Correct. The negative pole?
00:04:57A similar experiment to the one we've conducted here was recently carried out at Wisconsin Tech, using a voltage many thousands of times greater, which produced a spark closely simulating actual lightning.
00:05:07It isn't the voltage that creates the voltage. It isn't the voltage that creates the hazard. It's the amount of current flow. If a man were to come in contact with a high voltage without a direct path to ground, it's probable that he wouldn't be harmed.
00:05:18However, if the circuit's completed to ground, the current will flow unhampered and cause him to be electrocuted.
00:05:25Now for our next experiment. If Mike, Carol, and Joe have finished their business.
00:05:42I can't blame people for what they think. Even Mother says he must have run into some of his old cronies and stayed in town.
00:05:49He had his paycheck with him. I know it isn't true. Not this time. He promised he'd be back. I know something's happened to him.
00:06:00Sure it did. Maybe he ran out of gas. He'd never meet anybody on this road.
00:06:08Hold everything. What do you call that?
00:06:18What do you call this stuff? I don't get it.
00:06:33Stuck to the tree up there and...
00:06:35...scritched across the highway and...
00:06:38...it's between two trees.
00:06:40Who would do a thing like that?
00:06:41I don't know. I don't even know what this stuff is.
00:06:46You know, it looks like there's been an accident around here or something.
00:06:51This figure is a guy driving along last night.
00:06:54Hits this thing stretched across the highway and...
00:06:57...cracks it up.
00:06:59See the glass?
00:07:05Wouldn't do too good for Joe's tires, would it?
00:07:10You know, maybe that's what happened to your old man.
00:07:15Where is he now?
00:07:16Oh, I wouldn't worry about that, Carol.
00:07:17He's probably hanging around some garage waiting for a busted fender to get fixed.
00:07:21It's a carol with...
00:07:33...with love, Dad.
00:07:36Okay, so he dropped it when the accident happened.
00:07:38What of it?
00:07:40If he was all right, he wouldn't leave it laying here.
00:07:43And if he was in a garage, he'd call Mother and let her know.
00:07:47What's that down there?
00:07:49There's no pickup truck.
00:07:51That's what Dad was driving.
00:08:21It's Dad.
00:08:24Good thing he got out of it in time.
00:08:26What if he didn't?
00:08:27Dad!
00:08:29Dad!
00:08:29What good will that do?
00:08:31Well, if he's hurt, he could still be around somewhere.
00:08:34That's right, he could be.
00:08:35But he isn't.
00:08:40Unless he went in the cave.
00:08:42Oh, he wouldn't go in there.
00:08:44I never believed those stories about the cave.
00:08:45Maybe he doesn't either.
00:08:47You know, it got pretty cold last night.
00:08:48I suppose he couldn't walk far.
00:08:49I wanted to, well, keep warm until help came.
00:08:52Come on, let's go take a look.
00:08:53Come on.
00:08:54Come on.
00:08:55Come on.
00:09:00Come on.
00:09:00Let's go.
00:09:30Find anything, Mike?
00:09:33No.
00:09:34Do you really think he could be in there?
00:09:36I don't know.
00:09:39Wait a minute.
00:09:41Maybe I'd better go in.
00:09:42You wait here, will you?
00:09:43Oh, be careful.
00:09:47Mike?
00:09:48What?
00:09:49You won't go very far, will you?
00:09:51People have gone in there and never come out again.
00:10:00Mike?
00:10:05Mike!
00:10:08I told you to stay outside.
00:10:10How was the idea of following me?
00:10:14Mike, I'm scared of being alone.
00:10:18Do you see any sign of him?
00:10:20Well, it wouldn't be right here near the opening if you wanted to keep warm.
00:10:23I'm going with him.
00:10:27I'm going with him.
00:10:45It's no use.
00:10:46He doesn't seem to be in here either.
00:10:47Oh, let's not give up yet, please, Mike.
00:10:49Who said anything about giving up?
00:10:51We're just getting started.
00:10:53This cave is supposed to go way back under that mountain forever.
00:11:01Dad?
00:11:04Dad!
00:11:10Dad!
00:11:10Dad!
00:11:33Dad.
00:11:35How will we ever find him in a place this big?
00:11:40Mike, let's go this way.
00:11:50Dad!
00:11:53Dad!
00:11:58Dad!
00:12:03Dad!
00:12:10Dad!
00:12:40Dad!
00:12:47Dad!
00:12:51Oh, Mike!
00:12:52Mike, I think we'd better go back.
00:12:54I think you're right.
00:12:56But I... I can't go without...
00:13:01All right, I...
00:13:03We might as well look a little further, I guess.
00:13:06Mike, I can't see!
00:13:30Mike, I can't see!
00:13:36Are you okay, Carol?
00:13:41I think so.
00:13:47What is this thing we fell in?
00:13:50I don't know.
00:13:53It's sticky, though.
00:13:55I can hardly get loose.
00:13:57I know, I can't.
00:14:00It's just like glue.
00:14:01You know, it's like that ropey stuff we found up on the road.
00:14:09What's that noise?
00:14:14I don't know.
00:14:19It's the regular net we're on, you know that?
00:14:28There it is again.
00:14:31There it is.
00:14:35Mike!
00:14:36What is it?
00:14:50I can't look at it.
00:14:52I can't look at it!
00:14:53I can't look at it!
00:14:54I can't look at it!
00:14:55I can't look at it!
00:15:01Harry, please!
00:15:24I can't say for sure without having it analyzed,
00:15:26but it does look like a large piece of natural silk.
00:15:29What did we tell you?
00:15:31But that doesn't necessarily prove there's a giant spider.
00:15:34That part's pretty hard to swallow.
00:15:36But we saw it!
00:15:37Believe me, my son is not in the habit of lying, Mrs. Kingman.
00:15:40That isn't what Helen meant.
00:15:42Whether we believe their story or not,
00:15:44the man to see about it is the sheriff.
00:15:46Yeah, sure, see the sheriff.
00:15:49We did.
00:15:50He didn't believe them.
00:15:59Sheriff's house.
00:16:01Oh, yes, Mr. Kingman.
00:16:03What can I do for you?
00:16:05Oh, don't go yet.
00:16:06It's only that high school teacher.
00:16:08Well, you know these teenagers as well as I do, Mr. Kingman.
00:16:12Yeah, what will they pull next, huh?
00:16:14Spiders.
00:16:15I told them to bring me one, and I believe it.
00:16:16I can't say I blame you, Sheriff.
00:16:17Naturally, I didn't call you up to get you to investigate abnormal insect life.
00:16:19But Flynn's still missing, I believe.
00:16:20The youngsters found traces of him out there.
00:16:21I can't say I blame you, Sheriff.
00:16:22Naturally, I didn't call you up to get you to investigate abnormal insect life.
00:16:24But Flynn's still missing, I believe.
00:16:25The youngsters found traces of him out there.
00:16:26Oh, yes, Mr. Kingman.
00:16:27What can I do for you?
00:16:28Oh, don't go yet.
00:16:29It's only that high school teacher.
00:16:30Spencer, Haskell, maybe old Jake.
00:16:31Anyone else that isn't busy.
00:16:32Bring them here and I'll swear them in.
00:16:33Oh, no, no.
00:16:34No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:16:37I don't know how to investigate abnormal insect life.
00:16:39But Flynn's still missing, I believe.
00:16:41The youngsters found traces of him out there.
00:16:43You may be doing yourself a favor if you looked into that.
00:16:46Well, you took the words right out of my mouth, Mr. Kingman.
00:16:49The fact of the matter is I've got my Deputy Sanders out rounding up a search party right now.
00:16:54Get half a dozen men.
00:16:56Spencer, Haskell, maybe old Jake, anyone else that isn't busy.
00:16:59Bring them here and I'll swear them in.
00:17:01Well, I'll need those two kids with us to point things out.
00:17:08And if you want to come along too, that's fine.
00:17:11Oh, don't you worry.
00:17:13We'll bring rifles in case we run into that spider.
00:17:21Anything else on your mind?
00:17:23Well, speaking of spiders, are you sure rifles are just the thing?
00:17:26Insects have a pretty simple nervous system, Sheriff.
00:17:29You could plug holes in one all day and never hit a vital spot.
00:17:32If you want to be on the safe side, call the pest control people in Springdale.
00:17:35Have them send out all the DDT they can find.
00:17:38Good.
00:17:42A giant spider.
00:17:44What next?
00:17:59Well, bring your bug juice and let's go.
00:18:01Say, what are we using it on?
00:18:02Does it make any difference?
00:18:03Well, I've got to mix the DDT according to what you want killed.
00:18:06What'll I tell him, Professor?
00:18:08Uh, spiders?
00:18:09A two to four percent solution is the usual dose.
00:18:12Make it 50.
00:18:13Make it 50.
00:18:14Make it 50.
00:18:20Table closer.
00:18:21Which will help.
00:18:22It's a zombie reduction.
00:18:23Whatертв bills are full?
00:18:24Are you for theiranychั้ 80?
00:18:27I'm a rogue.
00:18:28Is that a zombie ağurt?
00:18:29Go.
00:18:30What hassaacqu practices them to문icowtober's atmosphere?
00:18:31What do you need?
00:18:32You're rich?
00:18:33A juice pattern, you're rich?
00:18:33How's it going to happen?
00:18:34There's enough터ki easier to abuse?
00:18:35What's it going to happen?
00:19:06Which way, kids?
00:19:17Straight ahead.
00:19:36Some place.
00:19:48Make a nice elk's hole, you know that?
00:19:50Do you think we'll find that girl's paw in here alive?
00:19:56We might.
00:19:57Spiders have a habit of studying their prey with venom
00:19:59and storing them in a silk bag till they're ready to feed on them.
00:20:03Then they eat them up, I suppose.
00:20:05Not quite.
00:20:07They drain the liquid from the bodies, leaving only the skin and bones.
00:20:10Man, what a mind you've got.
00:20:13All right, let's look for Flynn.
00:20:15And don't lose sight of the man next to you.
00:20:16No sense in anyone getting lost.
00:20:18Just a minute.
00:20:32This is a waste of time.
00:20:34You know something?
00:20:36I haven't seen a spider yet, and I don't think we will.
00:20:39You will if he's still there.
00:20:40It would be just our luck if he'd moved into the next county.
00:20:45I don't think you'll be disappointed.
00:20:47There's something in here, all right.
00:20:49You naturally expect to find a certain amount of wildlife in a cave,
00:20:52rats, mice, bats, and so on.
00:20:54But you don't.
00:20:57You've been frightened out.
00:20:58No wildlife, eh, Kingman?
00:21:17That's about as big as they come, I'd say.
00:21:20I wouldn't handle it if I were you.
00:21:21It might have rabies.
00:21:28There, it's buried.
00:21:51Want to say a few words over it, Sheriff?
00:21:52Yeah.
00:21:58That's your father.
00:22:18When you get back to town, make out a coroner's report.
00:22:21Just put down Jack Flynn as the name.
00:22:24And the cause of death, the...
00:22:26It was a spider, drained all the liquid out of his body.
00:22:29Just put down cause unknown, and let the coroner worry about the rest.
00:22:35That's trouble with you eggheads.
00:22:36You jump to conclusions.
00:22:38I know what I see, and I see a dead man.
00:22:41But, uh, I don't see any spider.
00:22:43We can do something about that.
00:22:45Mike, where was the web?
00:22:48Right through there.
00:22:51Wait a minute.
00:22:52You don't know what you're doing.
00:22:53You can't just walk in there.
00:22:55Why not?
00:22:56Find any giant spiders, Sheriff?
00:23:13Oh, shut up.
00:23:15Get that DDT in here quick.
00:23:19Come on.
00:23:20Here, you'd better put these on.
00:23:31I suggest you spray that whole cavern so it'll get it when it comes back.
00:24:20Let's go.
00:24:50Help me! Help me!
00:25:20Help me!
00:25:22Help me!
00:25:26Help me!
00:25:30Help me!
00:25:32Help me!
00:25:34Help me!
00:25:36Carol.
00:25:38You think it would be better if I talked to your mother first?
00:25:40No, thanks.
00:25:41I can do it.
00:25:42I really believe you can.
00:25:44The box with a bracelet.
00:25:46Are you sure you had it?
00:25:48It was in this pocket.
00:25:50Maybe I dropped it in there.
00:25:52You can't go back there now.
00:25:54The place is full of gas.
00:25:56We'll come back some other time together.
00:25:57Hey, Haskell.
00:25:58When you get back to town, tell old Warren to get right out here and board this entrance
00:26:03up.
00:26:04Right, Sheriff.
00:26:05Right, Sheriff.
00:26:06Well, if you do, I'd suggest you put a big, wide door in it.
00:26:08The whole world is going to want to come here and take a look at that thing down there.
00:26:12Well, what's your idea...
00:26:13That the town should charge admission?
00:26:14That isn't what I was thinking of.
00:26:15You know what we eggheads are like, Sheriff?
00:26:16We want to know why this, how come that, what about the other?
00:26:18That's a matter of scientific interest in power.
00:26:19That's all that money.
00:26:21I guess I'll take care.
00:26:22Well, you got his advice.
00:26:23Hey, Haskell.
00:26:24When you get back to town, tell old Warren to get right out here and board this entrance
00:26:26up.
00:26:27Right, Sheriff.
00:26:28If you do, I'd suggest you put a big, wide door in it.
00:26:31The whole world is going to want to come here and take a look at that thing down there.
00:26:33Well, what's your idea?
00:26:34That the town should charge admission?
00:26:35That isn't what I was thinking of.
00:26:36You know what we eggheads are like, Sheriff.
00:26:38know why this, how come that, what about the other. That's a matter of scientific interest
00:26:42to find out what made that creature tick. Well, it's too late now. It's dead. The spider
00:26:46is, but not the principle that caused it to grow. That's still for us to discover. Well,
00:26:52why bother? We have to put an end to it. Otherwise, there may be more giant spiders coming into
00:26:57the world. They may even be hatching from their eggs in some remote spot right now.
00:27:01Do you realize how easy it would be for them to overcome us humans? Then instead of being
00:27:05the hunters, we'd become the hunted. They'd be our masters. They'd live on us. What
00:27:10would you suggest the Sheriff's Office of River Falls do about it, Mr. Kingman? Bring
00:27:15that spider up into the daylight where it can be studied properly. Well, if you want to
00:27:20do it, go ahead. But leave me out. It's not my job, and I don't want any part of it. Okay,
00:27:25Sheriff.
00:27:26Sheriff, you're welcome.
00:27:31All right.
00:27:32What's this?
00:27:35Hugly creature, isn't it?
00:27:37I can think of more suitable subjects for my camera club to take pictures of.
00:27:40What are you going to do with them? Send it to the papers?
00:27:43Just the opposite.
00:27:44One big advantage of living in an isolated mountain community like River Falls
00:27:48is not having reporters crawling all over the place.
00:27:51Yet.
00:27:52I'm going to send these photographs along with a complete report to Dr. Bergen.
00:27:55State to you.
00:27:57Nancy, would you get me some close-ups, please?
00:28:00Oh, sure.
00:28:03Good old Bergen.
00:28:05I had him for biology in my junior year.
00:28:07You know, I know exactly what he's going to say.
00:28:09Gentlemen, this is a perfect specimen. Exquisite, exquisite.
00:28:14I can't quite appreciate the humor in it myself.
00:28:17I saw it when I was still alive.
00:28:19I expect the university is going to want it for experiment and dissection.
00:28:23Frankly, I'll feel relieved when they come and take it off my hands.
00:28:27I can't say I blame you. It is a little unhandy.
00:28:30Took a house mover from Riverdale to get it here.
00:28:33Cost me half my savings.
00:28:35Besides wanting my money back, I'd like to get the high school board off my neck.
00:28:40I suppose the university doesn't go for it.
00:28:42Quite better.
00:28:44Do you think I'm going to all this bother merely because I've come across a scientific wonder?
00:28:55Not a bit.
00:28:57Somewhere in that hideous carcass are the genes that control organic growth.
00:29:01Man, I'd better find out what made this creature so big and find out fast or we're all going to be in pretty serious trouble.
00:29:18Usually, if nature produces a freak, it dies immediately because it can't adapt itself to life.
00:29:25It's what we ordinarily call a bird spider.
00:29:28The wonder of it is it's perfect, Fraser.
00:29:32Perfect in every detail.
00:29:34Fraser, you're hurt?
00:29:40Are you sure that thing's dead?
00:29:44Sure it's dead.
00:29:46How come it kicked me?
00:29:48It's just a muscular contraction.
00:29:50Galvani's reaction is called. It often happens.
00:29:52Not to me it doesn't.
00:29:54If it can do that when it's dead,
00:29:56I sure hate to meet it somewhere alive.
00:29:59Don't Carol. I can't help it mother. I know. I loved him too. I keep thinking it was my fault. How could it be?
00:30:28Never would have happened if he hadn't gone to get me that present. I've lost it.
00:30:35You mustn't think of it that way Carol. Why did I have to drop it in that cave? I wanted so much to keep it mother.
00:30:45Forget about it now dear. You have your homework to get ready for tomorrow.
00:30:50Oh and I forgot Mike called you twice before you got home from school and said he would be at his father's theater.
00:31:00Oh thanks mother.
00:31:07Hello Mr. Simpson. Can I talk to Mike?
00:31:23Mike, you want it on the phone.
00:31:33Okay thanks.
00:31:39Hello. Hi Mike, this is Carol. You said you take me out to the cave to find the bracelet.
00:31:43You don't mean right now do you? If you can get away. Please Mike.
00:31:47Well Carol not today. My dad just got in a new picture and I haven't even seen it yet.
00:31:51Something about puppet people. It sounds pretty wild.
00:31:53Please?
00:31:54Okay Carol, I think I can borrow Joe's car again.
00:31:56Only don't come by the house for me. I don't want mother to know I'm going out there.
00:32:00All right, I'll be down at the corner too.
00:32:02I'll be down at the corner too.
00:32:03All right, I'll be down at the corner too.
00:32:05All right, I'll be down at the corner too.
00:32:07I'll be waiting.
00:32:08I'll see you dad. I got a date now.
00:32:10Where will you be? I said where will you be if I want you?
00:32:15No.
00:32:16No.
00:32:17No.
00:32:18No.
00:32:19No.
00:32:20No.
00:32:21No.

00:32:25No.
00:32:26No.
00:32:27No.
00:32:28No.
00:32:29No.
00:32:30No.
00:32:31No.
00:32:32No.
00:32:33No.
00:32:34No.
00:32:35No.
00:32:36No.
00:32:37Yes, um...
00:32:43Hello?
00:32:44Hello.
00:32:45Hey, um....
00:32:46You remember that 5 bucks I bought you?
00:32:47It was last christmas, it got宝 and I paid it back!
00:32:48Well, I guess you...
00:32:49Yes I am your friend...
00:32:50You want to borrow 5 bucks?
00:32:51No, no!
00:32:52Look, Carol and I use your wagon for a couple of hours.
00:32:53Again?
00:32:54Why the big deal?
00:32:55Well, what do you care about?
00:32:56You know that, don't you?
00:32:57You want a four or five bucks?
00:32:58Oh, no, no.
00:32:59But Carol and I use your wagon for a couple of hours.
00:33:02Again?
00:33:03What's the big deal?
00:33:05Well, what do you care?
00:33:07Look, we're friends, Joe.
00:33:08Just remember that.
00:33:09Why don't you come to the rehearsal?
00:33:10Look, my mom is getting tired.
00:33:11Are we friends or aren't we?
00:33:12Okay, okay.
00:33:13The car's in the driveway.
00:33:14You'll find the keys in the glove compartment.
00:33:16Where else?
00:33:17Why do I have so many friends?
00:33:18Thanks, Joe.
00:33:19Sure.
00:33:20Come on, Joe.
00:33:21We got problems.
00:33:23No soaps.
00:33:24It's off limits.
00:33:25I told you.
00:33:31Look, we've got to get in.
00:33:32The dance is tomorrow night.
00:33:34Well, the cats will have a blast if we don't swing solid.
00:33:39Hey, let's get the janitor.
00:33:40Maybe he'll open the pad.
00:33:42Oh, not with Mr. Eight Legs still in there.
00:33:44Well, they can't hang us for trying, can they?
00:33:48Hugo!
00:33:49Hugo!
00:33:50Hey, Hugo!
00:33:51Hugo!
00:33:52Who's calling Hugo?
00:33:53Well, now, what's the matter here?
00:33:56We want in.
00:33:57We've got to develop our talents.
00:33:59Well, you'll have to use the auditorium until further notice the principal's orders.
00:34:03No can do.
00:34:04The drama class is there.
00:34:05I can't help that.
00:34:06Kingman is just here checking up.
00:34:08Told me in particular not to let nobody in.
00:34:10Well, Kingman didn't meet us.
00:34:11He meant squares.
00:34:12We're the coolest zoologists in town.
00:34:13No, sirree.
00:34:14The moving people are coming here tonight to move that thing to the university.
00:34:18You can rehearse all you want to do afterwards.
00:34:19In the dead of night, Hugo were only little kids.
00:34:21Mommy wouldn't let us.
00:34:22Well, all right, you monsters.
00:34:24And now, I want you to behave yourself.
00:34:25Don't muck you with that thing.
00:34:26Did that?
00:34:27Now, the first guy who steps on Daddy Longlegs is going to hear from Hugo.
00:34:29Yeah.
00:34:30Great.
00:34:31Great.
00:34:32Great.
00:35:01It's big, all right.
00:35:02Hey, maybe the drama class is through with the auditorium.
00:35:03Let's blow this place.
00:35:04It gives me the creeps.
00:35:05What is it, Superman?
00:35:06Chickening out?
00:35:07Well, certainly not.
00:35:08Well, let's stop goofing out, huh?
00:35:09Now, guys, let's start with the opening number, and don't go to sleep on it.
00:35:16play with everything you need to talk to me on this list.
00:35:35Oh, what's the reason?
00:35:36And don't go to sleep on it.
00:35:38Play with everything you've got.
00:35:39Loud enough to wake the dead, huh?
00:35:44Play it good and loud.
00:35:47Okay.
00:35:54Hey, what goes on here?
00:35:55Just the drama class. What else?
00:35:57All right, either you come in or get out.
00:35:59Don't stand there and scream.
00:36:01We're rehearsing.

00:38:28Hello? Hello?
00:38:36If anyone comes for me, I'll be at Sanders' funeral.
00:38:41I'll get it.
00:38:43Great guy Pete Sanders was.
00:38:45You've got plenty to live up to.
00:38:48Sheriff's Office, Cagle speaking.
00:38:51What?
00:38:54All right, Mr. Kingman, I'll meet you at the school.
00:38:58You stay here and answer the phone. Helen!
00:39:03What is it, Art?
00:39:05It would be a good idea if you stayed inside the house for a while.
00:39:07Oh, and I was just going to take the baby for his check-up and do some shopping for dinner.
00:39:10Stay in the house, Helen, no matter what.
00:39:12I'll be back as soon as I can.
00:39:13No, don't mind.

00:42:02Well, hurry it up. We want action here.
00:42:05Get off the streets!
00:42:07Hello? Hello?
00:42:09Sheriff Cagle, River Falls.
00:42:11Hello?
00:42:13Get off the streets!
00:42:20Hello? Hello?
00:42:26Operator, I've been cut off.
00:42:31Okay, sister.
00:42:33Well, that's that. The long-distance lines are down.
00:42:36I got my motorcycle out back.
00:42:38How long would it take you to get to Springdale on it?
00:42:41Maybe an hour, maybe less.
00:42:42Go ahead. And get the Governor on the phone.
00:42:45Tell him we've got to have troops from Fort Brown.
00:42:47Also, flamethrowers and artillery.
00:42:49Tell him we need... DDT?
00:42:51No good. That stuff just stunned it.
00:42:53All right, Dave. On your way.
00:42:55Wait, Dave.
00:43:13All right, Dave. Go ahead.
00:43:25Come ready.

00:43:45Could you?
00:43:46We get your name of Peter now?
00:43:48How about the name of Peter?
00:43:49I'm sorry.
00:43:50This is the name of Peter.
00:43:51Awe.
00:43:52Some data.
00:43:53It's still too soon for the troops to be here.
00:44:03I know.
00:44:04I thought they might fly a few men in with whirlybirds.
00:44:07I'll give them time.
00:44:09Hey, isn't that Jake?
00:44:13Wait a minute, Jake.
00:44:18Where to, Jake?
00:44:19I'm evacuating.
00:44:20That darn monster run me out of house and home.
00:44:22Which way was it heading?
00:44:24Toward Maple Street.
00:44:25I've had it.
00:44:28Maple Street?
00:44:29Tell them.
00:44:35I think that's just right now.
00:44:37Come on, just a little bit.
00:44:53Whoa!
00:44:54Come on!
00:45:06Whoa!
00:45:06Oh, my God!
00:45:36Oh, my God.

00:46:46Helen!
00:46:48Helen!
00:46:50Oh, darling.
00:46:52You'll be all right, Helen.
00:46:53It's gone away.
00:46:54Help, she'll be here soon.
00:46:55Now, take it easy.
00:46:56Sheriff?
00:46:57Any news from Springdale yet?
00:46:58Not a word.
00:47:00Good.
00:47:02Kingman says the spider's headed south along the old Higgins Road.
00:47:04At least the town's safe.
00:47:08Mike, will you help me look for it?
00:47:09Yeah, okay.
00:47:10Mike, will you help me look for it?
00:47:12Yeah, okay.
00:47:13Yeah, okay.
00:47:14Okay.
00:47:15Good.
00:47:16Kingman says the spider's headed south along the old Higgins Road.
00:47:21At least the town's safe.
00:47:23Okay.
00:47:24Mike, will you help me look for it?
00:47:30Yeah, okay.
00:47:31This isn't getting us anywhere.
00:47:33Why don't I buy you another bracelet?
00:47:34Wouldn't be the same at all.
00:47:35Besides, I'm broke.
00:47:36Well, when was the last time you remember having it?
00:47:40Well, it was just before I fell on the web.
00:47:41I was up there and then I stumbled.
00:47:42If I dropped it then, it should be around here somewhere.
00:47:47Well, it was just before I fell on the web.
00:48:06But then, it should be around here somewhere.
00:48:17Mike.
00:48:18Find it?
00:48:19No, but there's an opening down here.
00:48:22Do you think it could have fallen through?
00:48:25Hey, it looks like there's another cave down there.
00:48:29Maybe we can get into it through this opening over here.
00:48:31Come on.
00:48:36Oh, there must be hundreds of these caves down here.
00:48:39Hello!
00:48:40Hello!
00:48:41Look for my grave looks.
00:48:42Oh, I am looking.
00:48:43Oh, I am looking.

00:49:15I guess you're happy now, huh?
00:49:16Oh, I am.
00:49:17No kidding.
00:49:18Good, then I guess we can go home.
00:49:20Let's see which way.
00:49:22That way.
00:49:23Okay.
00:49:24Only this time, let me keep this thing for you till we get out, okay?
00:49:28Come on.
00:49:29Oh, my God.
00:49:59Oh, my God.
00:50:23We've got enough spiders around here.
00:50:29Well, help ought to be here soon now.
00:50:42Sheriff Cagle again, sister.
00:50:44How soon before those long-distance lines to Springdale are going to get fixed?
00:50:49Another two hours, maybe.
00:50:53Okay, sister. Keep working on it.
00:50:59Open the door, will you, Simpson?
00:51:01Mr. Simpson.
00:51:02Let's go.
00:51:03Let's go.
00:51:04Let's go.

00:51:31Let's go.
00:51:33Let's go.
00:51:34that thing to come back and finish us all off.
00:51:37I was all in favor of sealing off that cave some time ago
00:51:40while the monster was still in it.
00:51:43Wasn't I, Kingman?
00:51:45You can do it right now.
00:51:48It went back to the cave.
00:51:49Yes, sir, I've seen it.
00:51:50The thing to do is to get lumber out there
00:51:52and board that entrance up tight.
00:51:53Boards won't hold it.
00:51:54Any better ideas?
00:51:56You're the road farmer, aren't you, Mr. Haskell?
00:51:58I am.
00:51:58Do you have enough dynamite to blow up the cave entrance?
00:52:01I can blow up half that hill if you want me to.
00:52:04OK, Sam, go ahead and get the stuff.
00:52:05We'll meet you at your place.
00:52:06Right.
00:52:07Simpson, you've been sworn in.
00:52:09Take care of the office for me till I get back
00:52:11and call the coroner.
00:52:13The rest of you boys come with us.
00:52:28Sheriff's office, Simpson speaking.
00:52:30Oh, ho, ho, Mr. Simpson.
00:52:32This is Joe, Mike's friend.
00:52:34Remember me?
00:52:35Oh, yes, Joe.
00:52:36What's the trouble?
00:52:39I better tell the sheriff.
00:52:41Well, he's not here now.
00:52:43Maybe you'd better tell me.
00:52:45What is it, Joe?
00:52:47Well, it's about my heap.
00:52:48Somebody mooched it off me today to go for a ride.
00:52:51And it isn't back yet.
00:52:54After what that spider did this afternoon,
00:52:56well, I was just wondering if the...
00:52:58Well, it's a good idea to check.
00:52:59Now, what's the boy's name?
00:53:01Well, it was Mike and Carol Flynn.
00:53:03Did they get back yet?
00:53:05No.
00:53:06At least I haven't seen them.
00:53:08They say where they might be heading.
00:53:10No, sir.
00:53:11Thank you, Joe.
00:53:12I'll look into it.
00:53:23Hello.
00:53:24Now, Mrs. Flynn, this is Mike Simpson's father.
00:53:42It didn't take us this long to come in, did it?
00:53:47Sure, it did.
00:53:48You just forget.
00:53:51What time is it?
00:53:53I don't know.
00:53:54I haven't got to watch.
00:53:55I've got a feeling it's late.
00:54:01It's still light.
00:54:03Don't kid me.
00:54:03That's luminous algae.
00:54:05It grows on cave walls and it shines.
00:54:08Don't you remember Mr. Kingman to old our science class?
00:54:10All right, but from the next cavern, you'll see daylight outside.
00:54:13You want to bet?
00:54:20I don't see any daylight.
00:54:23Goof.
00:54:26We've never been in this cave before, either.
00:54:30We're lost.
00:54:35I know.
00:54:36Well, let's hurry up and find our way out.
00:54:38That's what I'm doing.
00:54:39I figure if we just go straight ahead, we'll come to the part we know.
00:54:44Come on.
00:54:45Let's go this way.
00:55:02Mike!
00:55:03Mike, we can't go any further!
00:55:04We can't go any further!
00:55:09It's a dead ant.
00:55:12There's got to be another way out.
00:55:16All we're trying to do is find it.
00:55:22Mike, look!
00:55:25There's something written on the wall.
00:55:26What did I tell you?
00:55:29There have been people through here before.
00:55:33George Weston.
00:55:35Lost.
00:55:37April 9th, 1902.
00:55:39Mike!
00:55:43You must have starved to death.
00:55:46I'm getting awfully worried, Mike.
00:55:47Me too, Carol.
00:55:49Why did I ever have to bring you down here?
00:55:51It's all my fault!
00:55:53What do you suppose your mother's thinking?
00:55:55Well, they wouldn't tell her.
00:55:56She's in the hospital having a baby.
00:55:57What about your dad?
00:55:59He's a pretty good Joe.
00:56:00I think he can take it.
00:56:01My mother can't.
00:56:03Not after what happened to my father.
00:56:05Don't make yourself feel bad, Carol.
00:56:07Don't you eat it, then?
00:56:09You know, all of a sudden I feel hungry.
00:56:11Me too.
00:56:12I just remembered, I've got a candy bar with me.
00:56:16I just remembered, I've got a candy bar with me.
00:56:42Let's go.
00:57:12All right, two men.
00:57:14I got snappy.
00:57:15Let's get that gear off that truck.
00:57:42Carol always lets me know when she isn't coming home.
00:57:45Always.
00:57:46But today, I don't know, she just wasn't herself.
00:57:49She attached too much importance to that bracelet.
00:57:52Oh, I hope she and Mike haven't gone back to that cave.
00:57:59Carol, do you see? This is the place where we got lost.
00:58:02Now I know the way it's through there.
00:58:04Yeah, but the spider might.
00:58:05If we stay here, it'll find us. Come on, let's run.
00:58:12There's the hole we fell through. We haven't got far to go now.
00:58:16Come on, climb up to the web.
00:58:27Come on.
00:58:29I'm stuck.
00:58:30Give me your hand. Give me your hand.
00:58:32Come on.
00:58:37It's coming.
00:58:39Bill, Pete, let's get that extra dynamite out of here.
00:58:46Well, that'll be the end of our spider's nest, eh, Kingman?
00:58:49End the spider.
00:58:50That's what you said last time.
00:58:52No, this time it's for sure.
00:58:53It's gotta die.
00:58:54No living organism can survive for long once its food supply is cut off.
00:58:58We'll be ready to blow her up in a couple seconds.
00:59:00Well, let her blow when you're ready.
00:59:02Get away back, all you men. I don't want anyone hurt.
00:59:27Isn't that Joe's car over there?
00:59:29Oh, yes, it is.
00:59:30Oh, yes, it is.
00:59:37Whoa! Whoa!
00:59:38Whoa!
00:59:39Whoa!
00:59:40Whoa!
00:59:41Whoa!
00:59:42Whoa!
00:59:43Whoa!
00:59:44Whoa!
00:59:53Please, do something.
00:59:54You sealed them up.
00:59:55You're going to have to open that cave and get them out.
00:59:57Now, don't get excited.
00:59:58We're going to do everything for them we can.
01:00:00How do we go about it, Haskell?
01:00:02Open up the cave again?
01:00:04That's easy to say, Sheriff, but it's gonna take some doing.
01:00:07Well, we blew up tons of earth and rock over that opening.
01:00:10Brought half the hillside down.
01:00:12Well, then we better start clearing it away.
01:00:14It'll take days, maybe a week even.
01:00:16Well, there isn't that much time.
01:00:17If the spider doesn't get them, the bad air will.
01:00:20Well, then we better get going. The sooner the better.
01:00:22You've got a car. Go into town and get them to send out a bulldozer.
01:00:26Wait.
01:00:27Maybe a quicker way than that.
01:00:28See that flat shelf a little higher up the mountain?
01:00:31Suppose we dug straight down from there.
01:00:35How about it, Haskell?
01:00:36Looks good to me.
01:00:37Let's get those ropes, picks, and shovels out of that truck.
01:00:40Here's where we go to work.
01:00:54You don't want to look at it like that, Mrs. Flynn.
01:00:57You've got to remember that cave is a big place,
01:00:59and those kids have a lot of sense.
01:01:01They'll find places where the spider can't get at them.
01:01:04If we do dig our way in, what's to keep it from getting at us?
01:01:07I don't know.
01:01:08What do you say, King?
01:01:10We've got to have some kind of an effective weapon against it.
01:01:12That's obvious.
01:01:13That power line across the hills.
01:01:16If we could bring a cable over from there, what for?
01:01:21Let's see if we can electrocute the beast.
01:01:31Know where we can find a quarter mile of insulated copper cable this side of Springdale?
01:01:35You might try the espresso.
01:01:37Seems to me I saw a lot of that stuff in there.
01:01:40You want to go for it in the truck, Simpson?
01:01:42Yeah.
01:01:43I'm sure you wouldn't waste any time getting it back.
01:01:47How's it coming?
01:01:48Not bad, but we have plenty to go.
01:02:05You're right.
01:02:06Carol?
01:02:07Carol?
01:02:08Carol!
01:02:09Carol!
01:02:11Carol!
01:02:12Carol!
01:02:17Carol!
01:02:18Where is it?
01:02:21Let's go.
01:02:23Carol!
01:02:31Where is it?
01:02:35Let's go. Can you make it?
01:02:37I'll be all right.
01:02:51We struck granite.
01:02:53Come on up and let me get down there.
01:03:21Let's go.
01:03:33Is this the place we came in?
01:03:35I'm sure it was.
01:03:37It blew up the opening.
01:03:39What did we do?
01:03:43What was that?
01:03:45Sounds like blasting.
01:03:47I bet they know we're in here.
01:03:49They're trying to get us out.
01:03:51Help!
01:03:53Help!
01:03:55They can't hear us.
01:03:57Maybe if we get closer to where they were.
01:04:03Help!
01:04:05Help!
01:04:07We're down here!
01:04:09Help!
01:04:11Help!
01:04:13Help!
01:04:15Help!
01:04:17We're down here!
01:04:19Help!
01:04:21Help!
01:04:22Help!
01:04:23We're down here!
01:04:24Mike!
01:04:25Carol!
01:04:26We hear you!
01:04:27We're coming!
01:04:28It's Kingman!
01:04:29They've heard us!
01:04:30We have a garbage truck!
01:04:31We're running!
01:04:32We're running!
01:04:34We're running!
01:04:36We're running!
01:04:37We're running!
01:04:39This is the power line Foreman, Kingman.
01:04:40He's gonna help us when the cable gets here.
01:04:41I thought you would be the one to brief him on what we're doing.
01:04:43Now, this is the power line foreman, Kingman.
01:04:48He's going to help us when the cable gets here.
01:04:49I thought you'd be the one to brief him on what we're doing.
01:04:52Well, my idea is to tie into that power line,
01:04:54take a couple of electrodes into the cave,
01:04:56get the spider between them, and turn on the juice.
01:04:58We want to create an electric arc, you see,
01:05:00so it jumps through its body like a bowl of lightning.
01:05:02You think it'll work?
01:05:03It could. How about electrodes?
01:05:05Simpson's bringing them.
01:05:06Have you got tools and rubber gloves?
01:05:08In my cheek.
01:05:09All we need is the cable number to go.
01:05:11That could be Simpson now.
01:05:13Oh, my God.
01:05:14Oh, my God.
01:05:15Oh, my God.
01:05:16Oh, my God.
01:05:35Ledge, if we can get out far enough on it,
01:05:38the spider can't follow us.
01:05:39Don't be scared.
01:05:46Just hold on to me.
01:05:47Oh, my God.
01:06:02Let's go.
01:06:32Let's go.
01:06:50Mike.
01:06:52Yeah, what?
01:06:53There's nothing to walk on over here.
01:06:56Okay.
01:06:58We can't get back.
01:07:01Give me that pick.
01:07:05Does that sound hollow or am I crazy?
01:07:13We broke through.
01:07:15You hear me? We broke through.
01:07:31We broke through.
01:07:35How are they doing down there? Is Carol all right?
01:07:37We're going down after them now, Mrs. Flynn.
01:07:39It may take a little while before we find them, but we'll send up news as fast as we can.
01:07:43As soon as I get down there, pass along the cable and the electrodes.
01:07:50Keep it coming.
01:07:51See, I have plenty of slack.
01:07:52No telling how much I'll need once I'm below.
01:07:54Well, don't go down yet.
01:07:55Wait for the equipment.
01:07:56You'll wait for the equipment.
01:07:57See you below.
01:07:58The rest of you men follow that equipment.
01:08:18Carol!
01:08:19Mike!
01:08:20Carol!
01:08:21Mike!
01:08:22Carol!
01:08:23Mike!
01:08:24Carol!
01:08:25Carol!
01:08:26Mike!
01:08:27Carol!
01:08:28Hey, Carol!
01:08:29It's them!
01:08:30They're coming for us.
01:08:31What did I tell you?
01:08:32Hey, we're in here!
01:08:33Help!
01:08:34Help!
01:08:35Help!
01:08:36Help!
01:08:37Why don't we split up?
01:08:40All right.
01:08:41You men stay here.
01:08:42Carol, better go armed.
01:08:43Yeah.
01:08:44Let's have my rifle.
01:08:46Mike!
01:08:47Mike!
01:08:48What?
01:08:49What?
01:08:50What?
01:08:51What?
01:08:52What?
01:08:53What?
01:08:54What?
01:08:55What?
01:08:56What?
01:08:57What?
01:08:58What?
01:08:59What?
01:09:00What?
01:09:01What?
01:09:02Mike!
01:09:03Carol!
01:09:04Look!
01:09:05Sheriff, this way!
01:09:19Sheriff!
01:09:20This way!
01:09:21Call me!
01:09:22Call me!
01:09:23Call me!
01:09:24Call me!
01:09:27Call me!
01:09:29Call me!
01:09:30Call me!
01:09:31Let's go.
01:09:46Clutch, Mike.
01:09:49I got it. Now what?
01:09:51There's a rubber glove. Put it on.
01:09:56Here we go.
01:09:57Tell him to hook us up.
01:09:59Okay.
01:10:01Okay.
01:10:03Okay.
01:10:17All right.
01:10:25Turn off the juice.
01:10:27Hold it.
01:10:29Hold it.
01:10:30Let's get the kids off the ledge.
01:10:32Oh, Sheriff, where's Carol? Where is she?
01:10:33She's all right, Mrs. Flynn. We had a little trouble getting the kids off a narrow ledge they were trapped on. Excuse me.
01:10:37Oh, Sheriff, where's Carol? Where is she?
01:10:43Oh, I'm awfully sorry. I didn't mean to scare you this way. Honestly, I couldn't help it.
01:10:49Honestly, I couldn't help it.
01:10:51Mike, you're all right.
01:10:52Mike, you're all right?
01:10:54I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you this way. Honestly, I couldn't help it.
01:10:58Mike, you're all right? I'm okay. I'm okay. I guess I was a lot of trouble to you, wasn't I, Dad?
01:11:04Come on, son.
01:11:07I'm going up.
01:11:07It's all right. Everything's out of the cavern. I checked.
01:11:10It's all right. Everything's out of the cavern. I checked.
01:11:13There's a lot of trouble.
01:11:14You're all right.
01:11:15There's a lot of trouble.
01:11:16You're all right.
01:11:17You're all right.
01:11:18I'm okay.
01:11:19I guess there was a lot of trouble to you, wasn't I, Dad?
01:11:23Come on, son.
01:11:32Go on up.
01:11:33It's all right. Everything's out of the cavern. I checked.
01:11:40Yeah, thanks, Jake.
01:11:47Good night, Sheriff.
01:11:48Good night, Askel.
01:11:49Thanks for everything.
01:11:54Sure took you long enough down there.
01:11:56I was checking up.
01:11:57Anything left behind?
01:11:58Nothing but a dead spider.
01:12:00Well, this time he's going to stay dead.
01:12:03Dead and buried.
01:12:05Let's say at least until some egghead comes along and digs it up again.
01:12:08Yeah.
01:12:08Thursday...
01:12:21A great day.
01:12:22I'm sure.
01:12:23It's your amazing Samuel Cosberger.
01:12:23Who rejects his ship?
01:12:25Let's go.
01:12:27Good night.
01:12:27Good night, sir.
01:12:28I'll walk away.
01:12:29I'll walk away.
01:12:30That's not easy, sir.
01:12:31It's whatever you want.
01:12:32You're Gruyere.
01:12:33Try it and stay dating.
01:12:34I'll hike to somebody home and come to this estate shop.
01:12:35Oh, my God.
01:12:35You
