03:45Hi, how you doing?
03:50I'm good.
03:51I'm Matt Mustard.
03:56First of all, I don't know that anybody told you this, but I want to make sure that you got it.
04:00We're treating you as a victim in a relationship to this.
04:04You're not being detained or anything like that.
04:06You're sitting here in a set of jail clothes because that's all we got.
04:08I know.
04:09I just want to make sure that you understand where we're at.
04:15Ultimately, the end of the day is about Denise.
04:22Where is she?
04:23What happened to her?
04:27These kidnappers took...
04:32Took a person I loved.
04:38And I don't know where she is.
04:40I was thinking, I'm going to tell the police every detail I can.
04:47I'm here to help them.
04:53I want them to find her.
04:55So pick a point in time and let me know where you want to start and tell me what happened.
05:01What happened?
05:06I woke up.
05:08There's this white bright light blinding us.
05:12And I see three laser dots crossing us.
05:16There's the taser goes off.
05:18And the man says, Aaron, lie face down.
05:21I called you by name.
05:22Yes.
05:23Okay.
05:25Then asked Denise to tie my hands behind my back.
05:28And I feel Denise get on top of me.
05:32I can feel her pulling on the zip ties.
05:36Lane puts on swim goggles over my head.
05:41They're blacked out.
05:42But he's blindfolding us.
05:45And I sit up.
05:47And I feel these kind of foam headphones over my ears.
05:51And then this music starts playing.
05:54Kind of like a...
05:57Wind chimes.
05:59So ultimately, there was this pre-recorded thing that you were listening to.
06:04Yeah.
06:05There was a recording that they were going to take our vitals.
06:08The voice tells me that he's going to take my blood pressure.
06:12I feel him wrap the cuff around my arm.
06:15And I feel that squeeze.
06:19They were going to give us a sedative to keep us calm.
06:23Which was a mix of NyQuil and Dianzepine or something of that.
06:27So I drink it.
06:28And then he instructs me to lie back down.
06:32And I'm shivering.
06:33I'm either from the cold or sedatives.
06:35And I asked for a blanket.
06:38And he goes, oh, I'm sorry.
06:40I forgot how cold it is in here.
06:42Because we're all wearing wetsuits.
06:47Later, we took Denise to a different room.
06:50He brought me down to the couch.
06:56We have a problem.
06:58This was intended for Andrea.
07:00What the fuck?
07:02Andrea?
07:03Yes.
07:04My ex-fiance.
07:06It was Levanta.
07:07I lived at the house until September.
07:10I broke up with Andrea months before the kidnapping.
07:14Why are they targeting her?
07:17He said that they're going to take Denise anyways because
07:21I could pay him enough money to make it worth her while.
07:24He said that would be about $15,000.
07:27They tell me that they're installing a camera that's going to be viewing me.
07:32If I go outside to view the camera, they're going to hurt Denise.
07:35At some point, you took my car.
07:37You took Denise.
07:39You have one car?
07:40Yeah.
07:41Which is a Toyota Camry.
07:42Okay.
07:44I heard my car running in the driveway.
07:46And, uh...
07:58The kidnapper takes Denise away.
08:00Instead of hitting me, I'm out.
08:02Hey, Jane.
08:03This is Detective Terry Poyser at the Vallejo Police Department.
08:05Just told me you can call me back.
08:06Hey, Jane.
08:08This is Detective Terry Poyser at the Vallejo Police Department.
08:13Hey, Jane, this is Detective Terry Poyser at the Vallejo Police Department.
08:32I was hoping you'd call me back.
08:35I get a phone call.
08:37My daughter's been kidnapped.
08:39I just have a meltdown.
08:44It just didn't make any sense.
08:51She has a new love.
08:53She has a new relationship.
08:57She's already a doctor of physical therapy.
09:00She's got all this stuff ahead of her.
09:04This just can't be happening.
09:07Denise has been kidnapped.
09:10It was like something hit me.
09:14This is every father's worst nightmare.
09:18So I called the Vallejo PD.
09:21They tell me that she was taken out of her boyfriend's home.
09:25And they're questioning him.
09:27Aaron.
09:29Say hi.
09:30I had never met Aaron.
09:33Aaron.
09:34I don't know anything about him.
09:35Hi.
09:35But Denise's boyfriends were always a good character.
09:42And she seemed happy.
09:44I just don't know Aaron at all.
09:47As a brother to her, I just can only think to protect her.
09:51So if this guy had anything to do with it,
09:54my level of suspicion just raised.
09:59Big time.
10:00Breaking news out of Vallejo.
10:08Police have issued an alert for a woman who's been kidnapped for ransom from a home on Mare Island.
10:12As a crime reporter, I'm rarely in the office.
10:15I'm almost like living in my car.
10:18I cover the worst of the worst.
10:20Murder, sex crimes, abuse of children.
10:23But this was completely bizarre.
10:26A 29-year-old woman's been kidnapped in Vallejo.
10:30This is a nice community.
10:34This is a place where you can raise a family.
10:38It just feels safe here.
10:39So this is very rare.
10:42It's really rare to have her kidnapping at all.
10:44The first thing I do is I look her up on Facebook.
10:49I want to know as much as I can about Denise.
10:55Denise Huskins seems like the all-American girl.
11:00Blonde.
11:02Very attractive.
11:05She's like physical therapist.
11:08This is a case I know the entire Bay Area media will be all over.
11:14Vallejo Police call a press conference.
11:20Lieutenant Kenny Park comes out.
11:23Are you guys ready?
11:24Yes, sir.
11:24There's definitely a sense of anticipation in the air.
11:27Shortly before 2 p.m.,
11:29the Vallejo Police Department was contacted by a 30-year-old male.
11:33He was essentially saying that the female, Miss Huskins,
11:37was forcibly taken against her will from the residents.
11:40Quickly circulated among the media that the witness to this kidnapping
11:45is Aaron Quinn, and Aaron is Denise's boyfriend.
11:52The kidnapping happened in the middle of the night,
11:55but he didn't report it for several hours.
11:57So we're looking at each other like, what is this about?
12:00Why was there this delay?
12:01As of this moment, Miss Huskins' whereabouts are unknown,
12:05and we are treating this matter as a kidnapper ransom.
12:09Most abductions are not stranger-related,
12:12so we're looking at suspicion falling on the boyfriend.
12:15Why would this guy wait maybe 12 hours to report to you?
12:19Well, unfortunately, again,
12:20I can't go into too much details at this time,
12:22and we are currently working with him
12:24to piece the puzzle together.
12:26So, unknown people
12:34broke into your home and kidnapped her.
12:40How did these people get into your home?
12:42I don't know.
12:43They didn't kick in the front door?
12:44No.
12:44They didn't kick in the back door?
12:46No.
12:46There's nothing like that in relationship to how somebody got in?
12:50No.
12:50It was very planned.
12:52Okay.
12:53So what happens next?
12:56I wake up still under these sedatives.
13:02So exhausted, and the clock says it's about 11.30.
13:07Six hours have already passed since Denise was taken.
13:12There's red tape marking where I need to be,
13:16and there's a fucking camera staring right at me.
13:19I haven't seen it.
13:20Is it a web-based camera?
13:22Is it a...
13:22It's, like, mounted on the...
13:23It's mounted on the ceiling in the corner of my room.
13:25It's, like, kind of like how that is mounted.
13:29So I can't call 911 because they're watching me.
13:37Eventually, I get an email from the kidnappers.
13:41They want $15,000 ransom, paid them cash.
13:44I call Chase to ask him how much I could advance.
13:49And I replied that I could advance $3,500.
13:53I write that back to the kidnappers.
13:58Then I don't hear back from them.
14:02Five minutes.
14:04Ten minutes.
14:06Twenty minutes.
14:07And now I'm starting to panic because I'm thinking,
14:10I don't have the money that they want.
14:14And then in my head, I'm just ticking away, like,
14:17well, how much time does Denise have?
14:19So I say to myself,
14:20I can't trust these fucking assholes.
14:26And it feels like my only choice
14:28is to reach for help,
14:31even though it's a huge risk.
14:36But
14:37I trust the police.
14:41I think they're going to help me.
14:42We arrive at the police station
14:52with no idea what's going on.
14:56We
14:57asked to see Aaron.
15:00We were told
15:01that we could not,
15:02that he was being questioned.
15:05The detective
15:06led us to a meeting room.
15:10He starts asking us questions
15:11about Aaron.
15:12And there is Aaron Quinn and Dad
15:13walking towards Canada.
15:16Fulfill your dream.
15:20Aaron was a really easy
15:22kid to raise.
15:25Come on, Aaron.
15:27Captain with the football team.
15:30He's had a lot of girlfriends.
15:33He broke their hearts, too.
15:38Aaron had never been a problem.
15:39He'd never committed any crimes.
15:42He didn't use drugs.
15:45He was working at
15:46a flagship hospital
15:48as a physical therapist.
15:51He's just a good kid.
15:52We only met Denise one time.
15:57She seemed really nice.
16:00But after everything
16:01that happened
16:02with Aaron's
16:03former
16:04fiance,
16:06Andrea,
16:06I just didn't want
16:09him to rush things.
16:10you started your story at 3 o'clock in the morning back me up to last night
16:20Denise came around 6 she brought pizza over for dinner is the intoxication level high is it low
16:30I mean we had four beers and a cocktail what's the conversation our conversation what's the topic
16:38conversation well some her and I've had because I also work with my ex fiance Andrea we had some issues
16:48with that you're not any kind of trouble or anything like that this is about Aaron
17:07you know we're trying to get an understanding about Aaron I understand you guys had a past
17:14relationship we broke up good terms bad terms somewhere in the middle very bad terms 2014
17:24I found out that my fiancee Andrea was cheating on me the rejection
17:33it was particularly hard because Aaron Denise and Andrea worked at the same hospital in the same
17:47rehab unit I mean we get along okay at work it's been sad but we you know I asked him to stop coming
17:55into my office I mean he would want to hug me and you know sometimes he would try to kiss me but I told
18:00him that wasn't okay and I mean he knew it is he still trying to get back together with you I think
18:09he would be open to the idea their relationship to your ex fiancee where was Denise's related to that she wants
18:19limited communication to what needs to be for work because of the fact Ben talks to my ex and at that time
18:27I mean I was still dating Denise I have a picture of a woman if you tell me if you recognize her
18:35uh her name is Denise okay she works on the same unit as you yeah I would say hi to her and then she
18:43like wouldn't she would like pretend I wasn't there nothing like big that was kind of my first indicator
18:49that they might be dating Denise did she have reason I mean did she like discover something
18:55some text messages what it said um that's me saying I still care about Andrea and I want to
19:03work things through with her so she she thought that you were going to get back with Andrea uh
19:08she was concerned about that she mad uh I mean she's cheating no well she felt that it was emotionally
19:18so she felt that way emotionally that was uh that was cheating in some sense
19:23did you truly love Denise I do love Denise
19:28search continues for the Vallejo woman possibly kidnapped for ransom federal land local investigators
19:42are working around the clock police are using search dogs right now around the neighborhood
19:47sonar equipped dive teams have begun searching in the waters around the mare island bridge
19:52Vallejo police are pulling out all the stops they got dogs they got boats they're looking everywhere
19:57for Denise behind me you can see a lot of media coverage taking place here this is a complete
20:02media circus so I get to the house it's a pretty yellow house it's idyllic it looks like something a
20:13kid would draw except there's yellow tape you got cops you're coming in and out dusting everything you
20:22got cop cars all over the street and it's just this whole place is shut down and you're wondering how
20:27can this be happening here in such a beautiful neighborhood so I go door to door asking neighbors did
20:34you hear anything did you see anything do you know anything about Denise she's really nice but you
20:38know they just work a lot so you don't seem a lot we really hope they find her and everything's okay
20:42who takes people for ransom these days just gives me the tills is thinking about it sometimes life is
20:46stranger than fiction I guess but I I just hope all is okay how's it possible that no one saw or heard
20:53anything that Denise just disappeared in the middle of the night from this house I'm scrolling Twitter
21:00different clippings and footage and it just becomes overwhelming we see the boats and we don't know
21:10what's going on I'm worried that they found a body search teams have been checking area fields cadaver
21:18dogs are among the searchers look I'm a crime reporter usually when a woman's reported missing
21:24she ends up dead how else can you explain that they're searching the area near the house so we're
21:31all thinking he called the cops made up a whole cockamamie story about her being kidnapped just to
21:36cover up that he killed her it's always the boyfriend I'm gonna I'm gonna be honest with you
21:48I'm gonna I'm gonna be completely square with you your story's very elaborate and in some ways far-fetched in my mind
21:59I I trust me I know listen listen I'm here to find the truth I'm a puzzle maker
22:07and I put a lot of puzzles together
22:11I don't think she was kidnapped from your home
22:16what do you think I think something bad happened in your house and I think happened between you and
22:24her no oh no I think that people kidnap people I don't know I don't know I know I bet I know and
22:32they're wearing what did they swim in wearing their what wetsuits I mean come on man it doesn't
22:37make any freaking sense so now I get out my puzzle pieces and I start figuring out okay how do I make
22:44it so you look like a monster do you know that the comforter is missing off your bed that's what
22:52the police officer told me blankets are missing yes why do you take the blanket and the comforter off
22:56the bed as the frog man why do you do that take the biomes and that's where you're getting at so
23:06it's obvious to me whatever happened happened in that bedroom
23:09maybe she overdoses are you playing with prescription drugs from work no it's okay if you are I'm not and
23:19if some if we take too much and now she overdosed you're like oh shit what am I gonna do I can see
23:23that happening too that didn't happen there's blood in your house there's blood yeah I don't
23:32know if it's hers or not yet I'm gonna presume it's hers I'm gonna presume that she wasn't alive
23:39and kicking when she left the house I don't know maybe hell maybe you call Andrea's name out in sex
23:43and she got pissed and you carted her ass out of there and you dripped her blood going down the
23:48stairs I did not do that yeah you did they did not come into your house and kidnap her and take
23:56her for ransom that did not happen you sat for hours and hours and hours and hours trying to figure
24:03out oh my god what am I gonna do but the longer she stays wherever she is and she begins to rot the
24:12more of a monster you look like tell me the truth about what the hell happened
24:19I didn't do anything I didn't so what what's next stage here
24:28give me a minute let me think about what's next
24:36I'm gonna stand up for him a second stand up right there okay
25:03all right Aaron there's no question on my mind that you failed this test
25:27so was it an accident or are you a calculated monster who got pissed off because there was a
25:34breakup and you just decided she wasn't going to be with anybody else and so you were going to just
25:38kill her and dump her she's gone she's gone and you know she's gone yes she's gone you're going to
25:47lose the respect of your family you're going to destroy them because they're going to defend you
25:52and everything that they've worked hard for will get flushed down the toilet
25:56you're going to be that cold calculated brutal serial killing monster that strangled the life out
26:05of her killed her and then callously dumped her body somewhere where we'll never find it
26:10I did not you you know where she is and you know what happened to her and so you look
26:16hold on hold on hold on hold on what's that I guess I need a lawyer I want you guys to find her
26:22I want you guys to find her I don't know where she is I didn't do anything to her
26:28so I guess I need a lawyer to facilitate something I don't know
26:33I've been a criminal defense lawyer since 1978 I get calls all the time from the jail and from
26:58from the street and you go hey this is some crazy bullshit six o'clock in the morning picked up the
27:07phone never heard anything like this here's this middle-class guy who probably believes in the police
27:14being interrogated about the disappearance of his girlfriend he's been down there for 18 hours
27:21and they're making him the fall guy
27:25I go down there in my first view of Aaron he's pale as a ghost and you can tell that he's been crying
27:41he's been eaten alive you know it's like chum for sharks and I said he's given you DNA
27:51samples he's given you fingerprints if you're not going to arrest them then he's leaving with me
28:04when Aaron comes in with my partner Dan he immediately begins telling me what happened
28:12I wake up to his crackling sound the room lit up
28:17and the story I hear from him is absolutely incredible then the man comes over and starts
28:25putting what feels like swim goggles over my head goggles wetsuits this is insane
28:32and then I say we're going to go over it again
28:36I wake up to his crackling sound he's ready to go lit up you've got to find her she's been kidnapped
28:44when I made the decision to call the police I thought there would be a manhunt they're going
28:50to do everything they can to track these guys but they just keep going after me
28:59I'm not a violent person
29:03I don't have a record my brother is in law enforcement
29:06I come from a good family I work helping people
29:13I can't be called a murderer over and over
29:21I would never hurt Denise
29:25I love her
29:26but I didn't treat her well
29:33took advantage of her empathy I betrayed her trust
29:39finding text messages was the last straw
29:46but I told Denise I was sorry
29:49and I needed to show Denise that I was taking actual steps moving forward
29:53I was going to start going to therapy
29:58I was going to stop talking to my ex
30:02I felt like we could start over
30:07but now Denise is all alone on her own
30:13just wanted someone to help us
30:16Aaron's been very open about how his relationship with Andrea
30:21caused problems with Denise
30:26the fact that there is a potential motive means that if Denise turns up dead
30:34they're going to nail him
30:37Dan Russo comes up to me away from your shot
30:42what do you think what do you think is he believable
30:45and I said Dan I believe him what about you
30:50I believe him and I believe in my heart
30:55but nobody in fucking North America is going to believe this story
31:0328 agonizing hours since Denise Huskins was reported missing
31:07police say kidnapped for ransom
31:09Vallejo police admit that at this point they still cannot answer the question
31:12what happened to this woman
31:16I was in a panic I didn't know what to do
31:18they don't give you a handbook that tells you what you do when your daughter gets kidnapped
31:24and so I just want to get up to Vallejo
31:29I take the first line I can
31:32drive over to the police station
31:35there's all kinds of press
31:37and I wanted to go on TV to reach out to Denise
31:43I want her to know that the family is is there we're we love her and we're not giving up
31:56and if you see this just use some inspiration to fight back if you can and come home
32:07Denise was a determined little girl
32:12she had dreams and she stayed focused on those dreams
32:20I pray that she hears the message
32:23I pray that nothing really bad is happening to her
32:27just pray that she's alive
32:37Tuesday afternoon
32:55I get an email
32:58subject line Denise
33:02and there's an audio clip on it
33:07my name is Denise Huskins and I'm kidnapped
33:13otherwise crime
33:17wait wait wait wait what
33:20says my name is Denise Huskins I've been kidnapped she sounds calm as can be not stressed not upset
33:26not nervous not jittery and it sounds like she's just ordering from a menu I'm wondering why would
33:32someone send this to meet it anyone else get this I'm looking around
33:36is someone playing a cruel joke I have no idea if this is legit or made up
33:43but ultimately I decide I need to get this to Vallejo PD because if that's her they need to have this immediately
33:49I get a phone call from the detective I need you to come back to the station
34:01there's a recording of Denise's voice we had to go and quick
34:06I'm just getting so anxious I'm starting to hyperventilate
34:14and they have a laptop in front of me
34:17I lean in to speaker
34:22and I hear her voice
34:23oh my god it's her
34:35it's her
34:42she's alive
34:47there's no question that's Denise
34:53I knew her first concert was Blink-182 with her friend Bethany
35:00and then she talks about a plane crash that happened that day
35:03earlier today there was a plane crash that helps 130 people die
35:10she's somewhere alive
35:16and I want to know if she's hurt I want to touch her
35:23I can't imagine what she's going through
35:31so let's go find her
35:33and then the agent says
35:35well you know I'm catching up here
35:38we're gonna ask you a few more questions see if we miss some things
35:41and I'm thinking what the are we doing
35:46a detective walks into the room and says oh hi I'm
35:50detective mustard
35:54he's asking us questions that
35:58are about Denise's character
36:01how many boyfriends does she have and how long did she have these boyfriends and does she drink
36:08very much
36:08kind of seems like he's trying to find something or find the dirt
36:16detective asked me if there was anything in Denise's past
36:19that it could help shed light on anything
36:25and at that moment I remembered that when Denise was a small child
36:33she was molested
36:35and detective mustard says that women that have been sexually assaulted often pretend to have it
36:43happen again so they can relive the thrill of it and I am I'm I'm just aghast
36:56what I'd like to do over the next couple hours is try to figure out what has happened
37:01it's a late hour and the room is filling up
37:07you have FBI agents top homicide investigators all grilling Aaron so I make a decision to record
37:17everything your relationship with Denise was on the rocks correct
37:23uh I always I want to say I want to describe it on the rocks they ask him non-stop questions about Denise
37:33did she scream when she was taken out of the house no okay did she fight at all about being taking a hostage
37:41I never heard her scream does she know that you have money
37:45she's aware of my finances yeah where your finances
37:48I start to think to myself do they know about things that I don't know about
37:54did it ever come to mind that maybe Denise
37:58was behind this
37:59when I talked to Amy about Denise I am mystified honestly can this thing get any stranger
38:29emergency hi this is highway patrol I have Mike huskins on the line regarding his
38:59his daughter that's been kidnapped. I just got a message on my phone from her. It's definitely her
39:06that she's walking over to my house on 19th Street. Amy calls me and she tells me turn on
39:16the news because Denise has been released. I'm like how? That woman who was reported kidnapped
39:22from a home in Vallejo was found safe this morning more than 400 miles away in Huntington Beach in
39:28Southern California. I can't believe it. They actually let her go. I thought I would never
39:35see her again. I just can't hold back my emotions. I can't tell you the prayers that have been
39:42answered. She somehow survived it. Who kidnapped her? Was there a ransom paid? And why exactly did
39:50any of this happen? What is going on? Why is she being released in Huntington Beach? It just
39:57made no sense. Huntington Beach is where she grew up, 400 miles away from Vallejo. And it's almost
40:06like a door-to-door service after you've been kidnapped. The Huntington Beach Police Department
40:10are reporting that Huskins appears unharmed with no visible injuries. She's wearing a hoodie. She's
40:16hiding from the press. She looks more like a suspect and not a victim. Something's wrong. I started
40:24thinking about, how can I get there as fast as possible? And so I text Matt Mustard,
40:32Aaron wants to talk to Denise. And the cop's reply was...
40:37Live from the KGO-TV Broadcast Center, this is ABC 7 News.
40:48Good evening once again. We are awaiting a news conference with the Vallejo Police Department
40:53regarding Denise Huskins.
40:55Vallejo Police Department is going to hold a press conference. I'm shocked. I mean,
41:00they haven't even talked to us. They haven't called Aaron. What the fuck is that about?
41:11Hi.
41:13A Huntington Beach police officer briefly spoke to Ms. Huskins.
41:19And all indications initially was that she would be cooperative with the investigation.
41:23As of right now, we have not heard from Ms. Huskins, and we are no longer in contact with any of the family members.
41:36The statement that Mr. Quinn provided was such an incredible story. We initially had a hard time believing it.
41:45And upon further investigation, we were not able to substantiate any of the things that he was saying.
41:51Denise needs to talk to the police.
41:55She needs to verify, back up, what Aaron has already told them.
42:00None of the claims has been substantiated.
42:03And I can go one step further to say this.
42:06Mr. Quinn and Ms. Huskins
42:08has plundered valuable resources away from our community.
42:14I know that Aaron is a victim.
42:17But I begin to wonder
42:19of whom
42:21who's really behind all of this.
42:24I'd never, ever heard of a case where the kidnappers drop their victim
42:30at the front door of their family's house.
42:35And when I listened to the proof of life,
42:38I thought to myself,
42:40my God, this woman is talking so calmly.
42:45Denise had caught Aaron texting with Andrea.
43:00She may be feeling so humiliated.
43:02She may be so angry.
43:05Maybe this is about revenge.
43:07Police are now calling it a wild goose chase.
43:12Investigators say the claim was orchestrated and there was no kidnapping at all.
43:17Police believe it was all an elaborate hoax.
43:19It appears the family were likely duped as well.
43:22Why are they saying this?
43:23Why are they doing this?
43:25It's crazy.
43:27Huskins and her boyfriend
43:29could face both state and federal charges.
43:32We in the media,
43:32we were very sympathetic with Denise.
43:35We thought, you know,
43:35she's this innocent victim.
43:37Now she turns up alive.
43:39Things are starting to turn.
43:40And this movie Gone Girl
43:43just came out the year before.
43:46It stars Ben Affleck.
43:50Wills Monk Pike.
43:54It's a movie about a woman
43:56who finds out her husband's been cheating on her.
43:58And so she fakes her own disappearance
44:00to set him up for murder.
44:02I don't know where my wife is
44:03and I came home to this.
44:06It's weird, right?
44:07When I woke up,
44:09there was lights flashing
44:10to Aaron face down on the bed.
44:14Everyone thinks her husband killed her.
44:18But then she shows up alive.
44:24So we're wondering,
44:26maybe Aaron did something to upset Denise
44:28and that this is her way to get back at him.
44:32Police now wondering,
44:33is Huskins a real-life Gone Girl
44:36like the movie?
44:37Who fakes her own kidnap
44:39for ulterior motives?
44:41Who fakes her own kidnap for ulterior motives?
