An important factor to take into account is the size of the logs. Depends on factors such as the dimensions of the combustion chamber and the type of firewood etc. To the using small logs there will be a greater air flow which causes them to burn quickly without leaving carbon (second phase of the combustion process of the wood) causing much of the volatile organic compounds to be they would lose. Large logs on the other hand burn slowly which helps to the completion of the complete combustion cycle, a defect is that it requires a external source or small timbers to be ignited. Finally it is important the accommodation of the wood to guarantee a good fire, it should not be placed in parallel way, this prevents air flow (gases move away and there is no combustion.)
