Syrian state television says these explosions at a military research centre in Damascus were the result of an Israeli rocket attack.
Video footage uploaded to the internet by activists shows huge balls of fire rising into the night sky.
Reuters isn't able to independently verify the content of the footage which was obtained from a social media website.
The blasts shook the Syrian capital in the early hours of Sunday.
The research centre was previously targeted by Israel in January.
Israel made no comment on the latest explosions.
They came a day after an Israeli official said his country was behind an air strike targeting a consignment of missiles in Syria.
