West Bank clashes erupt after killing of Palestinian men blamed for slaying of Israeli teens

Mourners in their thousands joined the funeral procession for Marwan Kawasme and Amara Abu Aysha, their bodies carried aloft through the streets of Hebron to their burial place.

Only hours earlier the two men had been shot dead by Israeli troops. The army says it was Kawasme and Aysha who abducted and killed three Israeli teenagers in June, an incident that spiraled into a seven-week war in Gaza.

Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner says they'd been trying to arrest the men when the shooting began.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ISRAELI MILITARY SPOKESMAN LIEUTENANT-COLONEL PETER LERNER, SAYING:

"During the operation, as we were penetrating the premises where they were hiding, the terrorists came out shooting. In the exchange of fire one was killed on the spot, and the second is presumed dead because of the exchange. The mission is completed. These people no longer pose a threat to Israelis."
