Twelve civilians including children killed in Afghanistan airstrike

A NATO airstrike targeting Taliban commanders in Eastern Afghanistan killed at least twelve civilians.

SOUNDBITE: Tribal Elder From Shigal District, Haji Shah Mahmood, saying (Pashto):

"Eleven children were killed. They were between one and eight years old. We have not counted the number of women that were killed in this operation."

Locals say they died after their house collapsed on them.

According to the Interior Ministry, six insurgents, including two senior Taliban leaders were also killed in the attack on the Shigal district in Kunar province not far from the Pakistani border. Both commanders were believed to be behind recent attacks in the area.

Asked about civilian casualties, NATO-forces had this to say.

"I can confirm there was an engagement yesterday in Shegal in which Afghan national security forces were engaged by insurgents and coalition air
