China sends defected soldiers back to North Korea.
Experts believe that there are unusual circumstances developing among North Korean soldiers stationed at the Chinese border.
About a month ago, 12 North Korean military members attempted to defect across the border into China. They were caught by the Chinese army and sent back. Not long before that two North Korean soldiers shot their commanding officer and fled to Changbai, Jilin Province.
The spike in defections may be related to food shortages.
The problem mirrors the desperate food situation being experienced in the country as a whole.
Humanitarian organizations predict that next year the country will need 210 thousand tons of food aid.
The situation may get worse for soldiers and civilians. Since it’s rocket launch last April, the country’s aid has dropped significantly.
The long-range-missile-launch cost North Korea 850 million dollars, the price of buying 2.5 million tons of corn. That’s enough to feed 19 million North Koreans for one year.
The country also recently spent 330 million dollars to erect statues of its late leaders and an amusement park.
