The highlights of day one included a 23rd Test century for Michael Clarke batting beautifully, six wickets for Ravichandran Ashwin bowling well and then a half-century on Test debut for Moises Henriques as he and Clarke rescued Australia from a position of 153 for five.
India also handed a debut to Bhuvneshwar Kumar but he was unable to make a breakthrough with the new ball or old and Australia were fortunate when Clarke edged to short leg, but was given not out - no recourse to DRS available for India and they had to get on with the game, allowing Clarke to pick up his century in the final over.
David Warner also hit 59 at the top of the order as Australia probably just shaded things, especially considering the precarious position they were in when Clarke and Henriques came together.
India-Australia series avehave provided some outstanding cricket over the years. Examples include VVS Laxman scoring 281 as India won a Test in Eden Gardens, Kolkata after following on, Harbhajan Singh taking a hat-trick, Michael Clarke's debut in Bangalore and more recently Laxman's shepherding India to a one-wicket win in Hyderabad and Clarke's own stunning run of form at home which included an innings of 329 not out as well as a double-century.
