The Lebanese army was deployed in the northern city of Tripoli after days of clashes between the pro-Assad Shi'ites and groups of Sunni protesters. Tensions have run high since a group of 14 Lebanese and Palestinian gunmen who joined the fight against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime were killed on the Syrian border.
