STORY: Tunisia's Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali rejected calls for his resignation on Thursday (November 29) after two days of violent protests against economic hardship.
At least 200 people were injured when demonstrators demanding jobs clashed with police on Tuesday and Wednesday in Siliana whose inhabitants have long complained of neglect.
Protesters and a prominent leftist politician called upon Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali to step down after the violence, which started after a leading trade union called for the protests.
Jebali accused opposition parties of sowing disorder and called for the violence to end.
Police were captured on camera beating protesters caught in the protests.
Tension between secularists and Salafis over the direction of the North African state has hit the economy, which has yet to recover from the instability that followed the toppling of autocratic leader Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali last year.
