Rescuers hunt on for Indonesia ferry survivors
- 12 years ago
Rescuers have now found 214 survivors from the ferry that sank in the Sunda Straight, Indonesia's Transportation Ministry says.
But they add that many more are still missing, a day after the vessel collided with a cargo ship.
The total number of passengers was listed as 200 -- the actual number is likely much higher.
At least eight died in the sinking, likely more.
Ferries are a popular means of transportation between Indonesia's many islands, where sea connections are cheaper and more available than air travel.
But safety standards are lax - and many ferries are severely overcrowded.
