STORY: Eleven people were confirmed dead and more than 20 were missing after a mudslide ripped through a town in the Peruvian jungle on Wednesday (October 17).

Rescue workers and locals searched the rubble of homes for survivors in the town of Nuevo Porvenir in the Humasapa valley, which sits in northern Peru's Picota province.

Civil defence volunteers and locals used makeshift stretchers made out of limbs to get people across a river so they could be transported to a hospital.

One man said he found a girl who had been separated from her mother.

Authorities say the slide, touched off by heavy rains, destroyed ten homes and wiped out a footbridge.
