BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio De Janeiro/Brazil (Sunday, May 15, 2011) -- Four-times and reigning women's world surfing champion, Stephanie Gilmore (Gold Coast, AUS), has watched her chances for a record fifth title disappear with Hawaiian tear-away, Carissa Moore (Haw) extending her lead with another tour victory, this time at the Billabong Rio Pro in Brazil.
The victory was Moore's third from five straight finals, earning her US$25,000 and 10,000 all important world-tour ratings points.
Moore defeated world ranked number two, Australian Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW) in the 30-minute final with a total of 14.87 points to 13.80. Moore and Fitzgibbons were neck-and-neck after their opening rides, but the young Hawaiian notched a solid 8.10 out of a possible midway through the heat to steal the lead.
Moore's win sees her sittting more than 6,000 points in front of Fitzgibbons with just two events remaining on the 2011 calendar.

Only Fitzgibbons has a mathematical chance of catching the 18 year-old. The last female Hawaiian world surfing champion was Margo Oberg in 1981.
Fitzgibbon's runner-up placing today was the 20 year olds third final for the season. Her debut world tour victory came at Bells Beach, Australia in April. She then claimed the very next event in Taranaki, New Zealand.
Until today, Gilmore was the only surfer to have won a world title every year she has competed at the sport's highest level. She won her first title as a rookie aged 19.
With her reign brought to an end today, the reality of the loss began to sink in. Gilmore choked back tears as she spoke with media.

Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, put on an impressive performance in front of her hometown crowd to match her best result of 2011. The talented Brazilian finished behind Carissa Moore in their Semifinals matchup and was happy to tie her best result of the season at her home event.
Just two women's world tour events remain on the 2011 calendar.
The top 17 rated surfers in the world head next to France for the penultimate event, the Roxy Pro, Biarritz in July.
The Billabong Rio Pro women's event was the fifth of seven on the 2011 ASP Women's World Tour and incorporates the US$500,000 Men's division.

The tournament has a waiting period from running until May 22 and every heat is webcast LIVE via http://www.billabongpro.com
