Israel strikes targets in Gaza

Residents of a camp in Gaza wake to scenes of destruction after Israel carried out a series of air strikes across the coastal strip.

Israeli warplanes hit several targets in Gaza on Monday -- a day after Palestinian militants fired rockets on southern Israel, causing damage but no casualties.

Meanwhile, police in Gaza City inspect damage at their station, also struck Monday by an Israeli warplane.

Last week Israel killed six Palestinian militants in two locations in Gaza, foiling attempts to fire rockets towards Israel and plant explosives near the border fence.

Gaza's Hamas government has largely refrained in recent years from launching cross-border rocket attacks.

But Israel says that as Gaza's ruler, Hamas bears overall responsibility for any strikes from the territory.
