Thousands of Syrian refugees cross Jordan border

Syrian refugees trek through the mountains, in search of safety in Jordan.

Officials say some 66,000 Syrians have crossed the border through Tel Shihab, fleeing an escalating civil war.

It's a two hour walk in the heat up treacherous mountain roads.

On arrival, safety and aid.

SOUNDBITE: LEADER OF BORDER GUARDS, HUSSIEN ZYOUD, SAYING (Arabic):

"All we do is ensure their safety and provide them with meals. They come here terribly exhausted. It is a long way. We provide them with something to drink."

Aside from the long journey, refugees can also face a dangerous crossing.

Clashes have erupted between Jordanian and Syrian troops.

Border guards in Jordan say Syrian soldier target people crossing the border.

Syria's neighbouring countries have been struggling with an influx of refugees since the conflict began 17 months ago.
