STORY: Two people have died and thousands were evacuated on Monday as forest fires raged in the western region of Alicante in Spain, after the hottest weekend of the summer season, according to authorities.

According to Spanish police, the fires killed two members of the emergency services crew who had been battling the blaze.

Alicante authorities said on Monday afternoon that they had managed to bring the fires under control, as emergency services continued fighting forest fires in other areas of Spain.

Spain has already suffered a number of forest fires in various regions this year. Around 50,000 hectares of land were destroyed in the first five months of 2012, making this year the worst since 2002, according to the Environment Ministry.
