Hong Kong media report that tens of thousands of residents in Shifang city, Sichuan province stormed city government headquarters. Over the past three days, demonstrators have smashed police cars and clashed with thousands of anti-riot police. The protesters fear being poisoned by a new copper alloy plant that is under construction.

Local authorities say at least 13 people were injured after police used tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Hong Kong newspaper, Ming Pao says one student was killed.

Shifang authorities warned those using the Internet, text messages and other means of (quote) "incitement" to (quote)"immediately stop their illegal activities".

They also called for those responsible for the protests to give themselves up within three days. Otherwise, they risk facing even harsher punishment.

The protest is the latest example of large-scale social unrest in China.

It is symptomatic of rising public anger in China against social woes such as inequalities, official corruption and environmental degradation.

Construction at the copper plant has stopped.
