An anti-Japan rally in southern China drew nearly a thousand people --- many who say it is time for Beijing to reassert its claim to the islands the two countries have been fueding over for decades.

Protesters also gathered in front of Japanese shops and shouted "stop buying Japanese goods", ATV footage showed.

The protests echoed last Sunday's (August 19) nation-wide anti-Japan demonstrations, which took place four days after Japanese police detained Chinese activists who landed on the disputed islands on August 15.

Tokyo and Beijing have been fighting over the island chain near potentially huge maritime gas fields in the East China Sea.
