Thousands flee landslides in southwest China

Brought on my heavy rainfall, they've damaged many houses, and forced thousands of residents to evacuate, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

One villager says he managed to escape just in the nick of time.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNNAMED VILLAGER AFFECTED BY LANDSLIDES SAYING:

"At the time I heard a noise coming from the mountains, and then the mud flows came. The houses were washed away. I ran away quickly without comprehending what had happened."

Landslides hit a total of 33 towns and have created drinking water shortages affecting some 55,000 people, according to CCTV.
