At least four people were killed and over 100 others injured after an earthquake hit a mountainous area in southwest China, state media reported on Monday (June 25).

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.5 and struck the border between Sichuan and Yunnan province just before 4:00 p.m. (0800 GMT) local time on Sunday (June 24), at a depth of 9.3 kilometres (5.8 miles).

China's state media have put the magnitude as 5.7.

Fifty-three aftershocks were also detected on Sunday, with the strongest measuring at 3.8 magnitude, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

One-hundred-and-six people, including seven tourists, were injured, 20 of them suffering severe wounds, it added.

The quake also toppled over 4,280 houses and cut off transport services and water supplies in Ninglang, disrupting more than 21,800 people, Xinhua said.

A quake relief headquarters has been set up and a team of 1,300 rescuers have been dispatched to the quake-hit region, Xinhua said, quoting local authorities.
