Afghan police are often poorly equipped and poorly trained, yet they're operating as frontline security forces in the fight against the Taliban.

But they're paying with their lives. In the past week alone, 39 of them have been killed. One of them was Fareed Nouzay, who had come to the aid of stranded Al Jazeera journalists a few days ago.
