The US offensive in Afghanistan is the first big step for Barack Obama, the US president, in his renewed approach aimed at fighting the Taliban.

The new strategy involves closer contact between US soldiers and Afghanistan's local population.

But Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports that, with the frequent deaths of civilians through US air raids, Obama faces an up-hill task.
