Lawyer meets with Afghan shooting suspect

Attorney John Henry Browne met with the U.S. soldier implicated in the massacre of 16 Afghan villagers.

The lawyer was surrounded by media outside his hotel in Kansas.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) JOHN HENRY BROWNE, CIVILIAN ATTORNEY FOR U.S. ARMY STAFF SERGEANT ROBERT BALES, SAYING:

"He doesn't remember everything in the evening in question. That doesn't mean he has amnesia."

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is suspected of walking off his base in southern Afghanistan on March 11 and gunning down the 16 civilians, including nine children.

He is being kept in solitary confinement at the Fort Leavenworth military detention centre.

Bales has not yet been charged.
