Alan, from Tyne and Wear, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, in 2002. As a child he spent many weekends out in the garden or down on the beach, but never put any sunscreen on.

Getting a painful sunburn just once every two years can triple the risk of the most serious type of skin cancer.

Its important to not let sunburn catch you out at home or on holiday. You should use shade, clothing and sunscreen of factor 15 or higher to protect yourself from sunburn.

Watch Alan's video, hear his story and learn why spotting skin cancer early is important.
