Protests intensify in Homs

Residents say he was killed by sniper fire when he was buying bread for his family.

Protests are intensifying in Homs with more amateur video purporting to show defiant Free Syrian Army fighters firing under the cover of a tank.

Waving the old Syrian flag - a symbol of defiance against the government - they fire their guns in the streets.

The rebel army, heavily outnumbered and outgunned, is a loose network of local units made up of deserters from government ranks and armed volunteers.

This amateur video shows celebrations in Homs following the defection of army soldiers.

But with President Bashar al-Assad refusing to step down, saying his government is fighting foreign-backed "terrorists", many fear the prospect of civil war is looming closer.

The United Nations say more than 5000 people have been killed by security forces since protests began in March.

Arab and Western states are now urging UN Security Council to act swiftly on a resolution calling for Assad to step down.
