Silent film "The Artist" was the top winner at the Critics' Choice Awards on Thursday (January 12), boosting its profile as the awards season heats up ahead of the Oscars. The black and white comedy picked up four awards, including best picture and best director for Frenchman Michel Hazanavicius, who called it "a love letter to American cinema."
Comedy/drama box office hit "The Help" was the night's other big, and surprise, victor. The tale of black maids and their white employers in the 1960s U.S. South brought acting honors for both Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer in their roles as maids. The movie also won best ensemble cast.
George Clooney was voted best actor for his role as a distracted dad in family drama "The Descendants" and female romp "Bridesmaids" won the award for best comedy.
"Melrose Place" actress Heather Locklear was taken to the hospital on Thursday (January 12) after emergency services were called to her home near Los Angeles. The Sheriff's department said that emergency services responded to a 911 call from Locklear's home and "determined that she needed to be transported to the hospital for further medical attention."
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, will not be extradited to Turkey to face criminal charges over her undercover reporting for a TV documentary on Turkish orphanages, a British interior ministry source said on Friday (January 13). Turkey sought Ferguson's extradition after a Turkish court accused her of "breaking the law in acquiring footage and violating the privacy of five children" while making the documentary in 2008. The charges carry a maximum jail term of 22 years six months.
