ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION).
STORY: Clashes erupted on Thursday (December 22) in Santiago as Chilean student demonstrators launched their last protest of the year and vowed to keep pressure on the government into 2012, as they demand guaranteed free and quality education.
Police mobilized against more than 1,000 high school and university protesters spraying them with water cannons and tear gas as students fought back, hurling rocks and other projectiles at police.
Several demonstrators, including one dressed as Santa Claus, were taken into police custody during the violent outburst.
Mounted police were called in to help secure the area as students look to change some of their tactics with the start of the new year approaching.
The student demonstrators say the education system is profit-motivated and of a poor standards and they want it to be guaranteed as a right in the constitution.
