A memorial ceremony has taken place at York Minster to honour all the French servicemen who gave their lives flying alongside Bomber Command in the Second World War.

Two Squadrons of volunteers were based at Elvington air base in 1944 and 1945, but they lost half their men flying raids over Germany.

On Wednesday a small service was held at the memorial to the French in Elvington village.

Around 1500 people gathered at York Minster where a memorial stone was dedicated, the first of its kind in a British cathedral.

At lunchtime there was a parade and a fly past of more than twenty British and French aircraft including some which have recently returned from Libya.
