Athens protesters clash with police

Greek riot police fired tear gas at anti-austerity protesters in front of parliament, as tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets against a new package of pay cuts and tax hikes.
The Athens mass protest turned violent when dozens of stone-throwing protesters tried to break down a police barrier outside the parliament.
The protesters stormed the metal fence and threw canisters at police, who replied with tear gas.
After repeated rounds of austerity measures, hostility to the government and the international lenders demanding ever tougher action has risen to new levels, and unions urged deputies not to pass the law.
