Exotic Pets - Baby North American Opossum - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. This is a North American Opossum. These are found throughout the Eastern United States and the southern states, through the Midwest and they are now found in Washington, Oregon, and in California. This is a baby. They will get about twice as big as this. Now, they are omnivores in the wild and they will eat almost anything. They are scavengers and they will eat insects, other small rodents, earthworms, vegetables, fruit. In captivity, we actually have an opossum mix that we sell and that you can buy that has a mixture of everything that is real good for them. They like fruit. They will eat canned dog food. They will eat dry dog food. They need a fairly roomy cage that they can climb in and climb up into. They like to hide in hollow logs so, anything that simulates that, some kind of a hiding place. A nice deep water bowl is good. They will also drink out of a water bottle. I have found that they prefer water bowls kept at room temperature. They can be like that year around. They grow up to be quite intelligent, quite loving, and they make very, very good pets, to the surprise of many, many people. This is a little boy. He is about three months old now. They grow very quickly and the more you handle them, the tamer they get. These are just absolute wonderful pets.
