Exotic Pets - Mossy Leaf Tail Gecko - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. This is a Mossy Leaf Tail Gecko. Leaf Tail Geckos are found only on the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa. There is a lot of different types of Leaf Tail Geckos. They range in size from several inches to over a foot. Mossy Leaf Tail Gecko usually average around 6-8 inches. They are designed this way as you can see, from the fringes and the flanges around the body and the tail, they are designed to camouflage themselves against tree bark in their native habitat. They are nocturnal and they are insectivores which means they just eat bugs. Beautiful, beautiful eyes that dilate quite a bit when they are out in the open in the sunlight. To set these up, you need a rainforest habitat. The taller, the better. The more cover, the better. They like to sit on cork bark, and we use plastic plants also, although live plants are very nice too. They need some UV light during the day to help stimulate their environment and then a heat lamp to keep them warm day and night. Usually a nocturnal red light works good at night and then just feed them. You put calcium supplement and multivitamin supplement on their food, which are crickets usually is what we offer and they do very, very well in captivity. They are very delicate and should only be handled when necessary. They do not really like to be held too much, it stresses them out. But all-in-all, if you are looking for something absolutely unusual and absolutely stunning, the Mossy Leaf Tail Gecko is your best bet.
