Do you need an airstone in the planted tank? Oxygen in ...

I have had tanks without them run just fine, but I think the fish like them much more as well as good surface agitation. Without good water flow in a planted tank your oxygen levels could get low for your bottom feeders. (my 125 may have killed some cory cats back in the day, i was running co2 but no airstone....why not is the question.
