The Sri Lanka government called for mass protest over a UN report. The report said that there were "credible allegations" of war crimes committed by the government during the recent fight with Tamil Tiger rebels.

Thousands marched through the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. They were carrying anti-United Nations and anti-Western placards on May Day, or May 1st.

They shouted slogans against the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and the United States. The US is seen as the country that's accusing the Sri Lankan government of war crimes during the government's conflict with the Tamil Tigers.

[Rangana Seneviratne, Protester]:
"Ban Ki-moon is trying to destroy our country. He has made a false report. With a false report he is trying to eat us. He is trying to fix our president."

The report said that the government was responsible for tens of thousands of civilian casualties, and called for the prosecution of those responsible.

The report was written by a three-member panel. Inside, the final months of Sri Lanka's quarter century war was addressed. This is the war Sri Lanka has been waging against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). In 2009, the Tamil Tiger leadership was crushed and the government seized control.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the war was launched to rescue over 300 thousand civilians, who were held hostage by the Tamil Tigers.

The Sri Lanka government claimed that the panel involved in the report was appointed strictly to advise Mr. Ban and did not aim to investigate matters objectively.
