People in the Australian city of Brisbane rallied in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He’s currently detained in the UK. Assange is facing sex crimes charges in Sweden.

About 200 protesters joined a rally in Brisbane on Thursday in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The 39-year-old Australian has been denied bail in London after he handed himself in to British police.

Assange faces charges for suspected sex crimes.

Andrew Barlett, a former Australian Democrat senator, says Assange should get a fair trial.

[Andrew Bartlett, Former Democrat Senator]:
"I think it's very important to recognize that Julian Assange deserves a fair go, deserves the rule of law, and deserves not to be bullied by governments around the world. But I also wanted to say that any woman that makes an accusation of sexual assault deserves to have their complaint treated seriously."

The rally is the first of two to be held in Brisbane. Another has been scheduled for Friday to coincide with International Human Rights Day.
