As Christian Democrat social welfare minister in the government of Lower Saxony, Aygül Özkan is the first minister in Germany with Turkish roots.Even before she was sworn-in, the 38-year-old lawyer caused controversy. A keen supporter of Turkey's bid for EU membership, she also suggested in a recent news interview that crucifixes be banned from Germany's school classrooms.
