The trial is underway for a slew of hotel bombings in Jakarta last July. An Indonesian national is suspected to have financed the suicide bombings and has links to a violent regional militant group.

A local court is trying an Indonesian national suspected of financing the suicide bombings at two luxury hotels in Jakarta last July.

The court was told Muhammad Jibriel Abdul Rahman had links with Noordin Mohammad Top, who headed a violent wing of regional militant group Jemaah Islamiah.

[Firmansyah, State Prosecutor]: (male, Bahasa Indonesia)
"Intentionally providing support or convenience to terrorists and hiding information about the crime of terrorism.”

Rahman is facing up to 15 years in jail.

Indonesia says Top planned the hotel attacks, which killed 11 and injured 53, as well as several other bombings in Indonesia.

He was killed in a police shoot-out in September.

Prosecutors also said Rahman sent an email to a brother who was living in Saudi Arabia, in which he said he had met Top in August 2008. He also discussed the need to raise nearly $11,000 U.S. dollars for the attacks. He also wrote about establishing an Asian branch of al Qaeda.

Rahman later went on a pilgrimage to Mecca where he raised the money.

His lawyer denies the charges.

Rahman is due to respond to the charges in court next week.

The Jemaah Islamiah militant group is responsible for a string of attacks that killed hundreds of civilians, including the bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta in 2004 and of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in 2003.
