More than 20 homes have been destroyed and three people injured in bushfires raging north east of Perth in Western Australia.

Residents who spent the night in evacuation centers were told of their losses.
"Nothing left, it's all gone. We've lost the whole house, the sheds, the lot."

Carol Lewellyn lost her home, and was lucky not to have lost her life, after a close encounter escaping the flames.

[Carol Lewellyn, Toodyay Resident]:
"We got a message to get out by our neighbors. We had about ten or fifteen minutes. I went one way and found myself blocked by flames, turned round, came back and luckily was able to escape."

Authorities said late Tuesday they would investigate the full extent of the damage at first light on Wednesday.

[Rick Tyres, Fire & Emergency Services of Western Australia]:
"It will take police and fire services the daylight hours before we have a fairly good estimate of what's actually happened here."

Authorities are optimistic the fire will soon be brought under control, with improved weather conditions expected.
