00:00You are having a busy summer. You have a new album dropping at the end of this week.
00:04You just announced a tour. How are you feeling?
00:07I feel amazing. It's been a long day, but I'm really excited to see this movie.
00:12Like, no gas. Like, even if this camera wasn't here, I'll just be telling you.
00:16Moe Betta, Malcolm X, Inside Man, these are my favorite movies ever.
00:22And I think Denzel has a knack for storytelling. Spike has a knack for storytelling.
00:28And to see them, you know, come together and do this at this point in my life is crazy.
00:35What makes Spike Lee such a special director to you?
00:39To me, well, one, Spike takes full control of his projects.
00:43You know, he's, like, he's extremely hands-on.
00:46And then he also, like, has a style of writing that I think really, like, does great characterization without, like, always trying to advance the plot.
00:56So you get a lot of, like, just colorful conversations.
01:00And even, like, I was just talking about Denzel coming from the stage a second ago.
01:04Like, he comes from, you know, stage acting and theater.
01:06And Spike kind of writes his dialogue as, like, you shout it.
01:10Like, it's all, like, you know, kind of, I love it.
01:13Yeah, theatrical.
01:14Yeah, I love it.
01:15I want to talk about your new album.
01:16How is this maybe a departure or an evolution of your previous work?
01:20I think the biggest difference is that I learned a lot in this time since I made my last album.
01:25I spent a lot of time traveling, you know, spending time in Ghana, West Africa, in Jamaica, in a lot of different communities around the states.
01:32And really just learning more about how to contextualize and, I guess, unpack some of the messages that I have.
01:42And so I feel like the project is, you know, it's well written, it's very witty, it's cool, but it also, like, takes time to, like, really break down certain ideas.
01:52And an upcoming tour, what can we expect?
01:55Man, and we back tour.
01:56I'm coming to some of my favorite cities, some of, like, my biggest fans to just do, like, you know, a quick check-in.
02:02It's been a long time since I've been on the road.
02:03So, you know, expect a new album worth of music, expect, you know, some of your favorite songs from the past, and expect a real personal connection, because that's what I'm all in it for.
