Felger and Mazz, with Paul Perillo of Patriots.com filling in for Felger, explore Drake Maye's turnover issues before questioning if it's a bigger problem than many believe.

00:00We all remember the play against Tennessee, where he miraculously ties the game,
00:03but few people remember how that game ended with an overtime pick.
00:07Terrible one, too.
00:08Chance to go down and put a touchdown on the board and win the game, right?
00:11In fact, he had two bad picks in that game, if I remember right.
00:14One was going the other direction.
00:16It was a horrendous play.
00:17Something to keep an eye on.
00:19Those two-minute drills, game-winning time, clutch time.
00:23We haven't seen a lot of that.
00:24I mean, the stupidity will undermine everything else he can do.
00:27That's the part he's got to awaken to.
00:30The stupidity will undermine everything.
00:33And I know Brable addressed this when he was talking about it.
00:35He said, look, one of the good things that happened for them that came out of that play
00:38is that the defense held them, I think, held them to a field goal, right?
00:42Yeah, and they ended up missing the field goal.
00:43But, yeah, that was a good thing.
00:46And the other thing, you know, it sounds like we're beating up on Drake May a little bit.
00:49And I don't, you know, he did run a couple of times.
00:52And, you know, one time he scrambles out of the pocket on a long-yarded situation,
00:56gets a first down, he slid.
00:58So, I like that.
00:59Because we continue to hear him talk.
01:01Tony, if you listen to him, he's like, you know, down around the goal line, you know,
01:05I'm 6'5", 230 pounds.
01:06Yeah, I get it, Drake.
01:08But you don't need to be subjecting yourself to those kinds of hits.
01:11It's almost like Jim's thing.
01:13Like, he's a little bit too stubborn for his own good.
01:15I like to see him slide in that situation.
01:18And the one in the red zone was an easy path into the end zone where he wasn't putting himself in harm's way.
01:22So, I do think on the two times that he ran in this game, he ran smartly, if that makes sense.
01:27So, I'll be honest, and I'm nitpicking.
01:31Let me admit that I'm nitpicking.
01:34On the first one, I thought he went down just a half a beat too late.
01:39Too late.
01:40He wanted to start going down and then change direction either because his stride wasn't right or something.
01:49Or he thought he could pick up another yard.
01:51But if you watch him, he looks like he's about to go down and then takes another sort of jab step to his left.
01:56And I thought that was a mistake.
01:58I thought when you go down, go down.
02:00Don't try to squeak out another half yard.
02:03Get your ass on the ground.
02:04Yeah, totally agree.
02:05So, to me, there was a little bit of a hesitation there.
02:08It's almost like he had to remind himself to get down.
02:11So, I don't think it's instinctive yet for him.
02:13Tony, I'm sure he does have to remind himself because he's always relied on his ability.
02:18And for him to give up is probably a big adjustment for him.
02:24I think that's one of the things that Josh McElon is really going to be working with him for.
02:27I mean, get your ass on the ground.
02:29Holy crap.
02:30He's got to figure it out on his own.
02:32He was still a few yards away from guys.
02:34Don't get me wrong, but I thought you could see the indecision there.
02:39Mike on the Cape.
02:40Mike, what do you got?
02:42Yeah, Matt, the idea that this guy would have worked out all the kinks and stopped making stupid plays with less than a full season under his belt is ridiculous.
02:51I mean, you watch guys like Romo and Favre, the gunslinger.
02:56Mike, just quickly, do you think that was your run-of-the-mill stupid play?
03:00Like Paul said, that's a repeat mistake.
03:02That's like a rookie day three mistake.
03:05And that's what that is.
03:05And if we saw it in like week 12.
03:08Okay, go ahead, Mike.
03:10You know, I mean, if you were covering the bills, you would have been screaming, trade Josh Allen.
03:16I didn't say anything about trading anybody.
03:17No.
03:18No one wants to.
03:18They wanted Josh Allen.
03:20The fan base and the media in Buffalo is screaming for Josh Allen to give up on Josh Allen after year two.
03:27That's wrong.
03:28But anyway, if this play had happened in like week 10, no one would be up in arms about it.
03:33It's the first thing that you see.
03:36It was basically the first, third, and long of his second season.
03:40He did exactly what he did too many times as a rookie.
03:42Exactly.
03:43But no one, like this is why I get annoyed at this because we're public enemy number one.
03:48Anytime, you know, you say anything bad, no one wants to get rid of Drake May.
03:52No one's suggesting they trade him.
03:54No one's suggesting he's not the future.
03:56You know, no one's saying pull the plug on the Drake May era.
03:59No one.
03:59Literally zero people are doing that.
04:01So let's not.
04:02And no one was doing that in Buffalo either.
04:05Week two.
04:05Year two of Josh Allen.
04:06They went to the playoffs.
04:07No one wanted to get rid of their quarterback who just took him to the playoffs.
04:11Look, when you make a mistake like that, you are undermining everything else.
04:17That's just stupid.
04:19That play is dumb.
04:21Dumb.
04:22It's as dumb as it gets.
04:24You got 10 other guys out on the field with you.
04:26A couple of them blue blocks.
04:28They feel bad enough as it is.
04:29And then on top of it all, you're going to turn the ball over and give the other team points.
04:34Like the whole thing, like I'm sort of buying into this whole thing of Vrabel protect the team.
04:39I'm kind of buying into that mentality because down there, people haven't protected the team.
04:44And I'm talking about on the field.
04:46Absolutely.
04:46Three or four years.
04:47That's a Belichick mantra.
04:48When you have the ball in your hands, you have the entire team's fortunes in your hands.
04:53Treat it as such.
04:54I mean, that's what that's the way Vrabel talks about it, too.
04:56And I hate to go back.
04:58I turn back the clock, Paul, and go all the way back to those Belichick years.
05:01But I remember when, and again, now I'm dating myself, when Ellis Hobbs was a rookie.
05:06And in the preseason, he was taking gambles and jumping for, you know, trying to jump routes and intercept passes.
05:13That's good.
05:14I do remember that.
05:15That's good.
05:16He got burned on a play and Belichick called him out and said, you know, you got 10 other guys on the field.
05:22As soon as you do something like that, you're screwing the whole thing up.
05:26You're hanging everybody else out to dry.
05:29Tell me how it's different when the quarterback, when he's being taken down, tries to change the ball from one hand to the other and coughs it up.
05:38Tell me how that is smart.
05:40And I'm sorry, that's as basic as it gets.
05:44Yep.
05:44So this idea of like, you know, he's still a neophyte, he's in year two, that one he should have figured out by now.
05:52I think we can safely say that.
