00:0013 days on from hosting the coronation of a Premier League team Chelsea as club world champions
00:09MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey provides the splendid setting for Manchester
00:15United and West Ham as they emerge from football's version of hibernation in their case is a summer
00:22of reflection after seasons of notable underachievement especially in the case of the
00:2820-time champions of England these Manchester United fans watched on from afar as Ruben
00:36Amerim signed off in May with an on-pitch address at Old Trafford in which he called Manchester United's
00:41season a disaster and promised that the good days are on the way back the question remains when
00:49and these summer series fixtures may just provide a clue
00:56the United contingent
00:58crowd considerably bigger now than it was for the first batch about 50,000 strong there's a lot more
01:04red around plenty of Hammers fans too and given the travails and the problems of last season Tim
01:10Howard this takes on an added importance because it sets the tone for Manchester United and West Ham
01:16it sets the tone indeed for both both teams in fact they actually named new managers kind of midway
01:22through the season and didn't get a change of fortune didn't get that new manager bounce so they'll both be
01:28looking actually for similar results this season Manchester United of course are the headliner they haven't been at the top in far too long
01:36and this project that they're looking to build is starting to gain strength
01:40well this is match two out of six in the second ever Premier League Summer Series you can see how it fits into the overall scheme of things
01:50already 3-0 winners over Everton in a game that you may have enjoyed with us a little earlier
01:57on Wednesday we head to Chicago West Ham up against Everton Manchester United taking on Bournemouth
02:03very very good today and then on Sunday the concluding day at Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta wonderful setting for Bournemouth against West Ham and we finish with Manchester United against Everton
02:15so these four Premier League sides choosing to prepare for the upcoming season of the Premier League itself will be the 34th campaign of England's top football competition
02:28and they are preparing in New Jersey Chicago and Atlanta
02:34the new Premier League match ball
02:39it's a massive it's a massive worry when you're used to one ball for so long it'll take some time
02:53the mascots ready to accompany their heroes out onto the MetLife playing surface which is worthy of comment in itself
03:04it is natural grass laid over the top of the normal turf
03:09and it played well oftentimes I've been a part of so many of these games where the turf chews up we saw some tackling we saw good running
03:17and the lines on the pitch looked really really well it stayed it stayed true I expected to do the same in the second game
03:23absolutely
03:24weather conditions are pleasant it's a lot cooler in the New York New Jersey area today than it was 24 hours ago and it was stiflingly hot
03:33and humid there's a little bit more air temperature is several degrees cooler
03:38much more acceptable meteorological conditions and the junior hammers much in evidence
03:45as they awake from the arrival of West Ham's senior players
03:50East London
03:55against Manchester United the most
03:57successful team until last season on their own in terms of league titles won
04:02Liverpool have now drawn level with them by claiming their 20th league crown
04:06so the challenge has very much been laid down
04:10under Sir Alex Ferguson their greatest ever manager they were intent in knocking Liverpool off their
04:15perch or Liverpool have re-ascended to it
04:17they're having to share it now
04:19last season
04:21was
04:23one of torture for them
04:2515th at the table
04:27just 42 points
04:28their worst season since they were relegated
04:32back in 1974
04:33and as a consequence no Europe this season
04:36for the second time since 1990
04:47the players ready to emerge from the shadows the bowels of MetLife Stadium
04:55as ever
04:57this broad stage
05:00will be a grand entrance
05:03music to match
05:07an ever-growing number of supporters taking their places as Harry Maguire
05:10adopts a position on the bench
05:12one or two notable absentees which will run through for Manchester United today
05:15new signing Brian Umbermo not involved as he improves his match fitness
05:19Nusem Masraoui carrying a minor knock
05:21Andre Onana and Lissandra Martinez here
05:24but not considered fit enough to actually be named on a team sheet
05:28which can by the way contain 26 names for this competition
05:33on this 11 starters and as many as 15 substitutions are permitted
05:39both sides have sufficient numbers to use all of those 15 should they so choose
05:46although Graham Potter of West Ham was telling us yesterday
05:49his plan is to give some of these players a full 90 minutes
05:57well it's only two years almost to the day since Manchester United last emerged from this tunnel
06:01en route to a 2-0 victory over Arsenal
06:04for West Ham experiences of the United States have been fewer and further between
06:09but stepping out at a stadium that will soon stage a World Cup final
06:13is a thrill for all concerned
06:16the teams sauntering out in early evening in New Jersey
06:28ready to stand Foursquare as
06:33rock music makes way to the Premier League anthem
06:49the two head coaches Graham Potter and Ruben Amorim Bruno
06:54Graham Potter's assistant getting in on the hugging act as well
06:58so Tim Howard use your expertise to guide us through the Manchester United starting 11
07:20well it's a it's a back three euro to lick heaven that seems like it's a strong one
07:25obviously no as you mentioned uh Sandro Martinez
07:28I think Kobe Meno and Ugarte won't go too far
07:31they'll let they'll let Ahmed go on the wing
07:34the door grew who had a really good season second half of the season on the left
07:37and Cunha he for me he's one of the most exciting players
07:40Bruno Fernandos to just hang out in that pocket and let him go
07:44and for West Ham and for West Ham again it's a very similar type of back three
07:48with the wing backs again Wan-Bissaka really found new new lease of life here at West Ham
07:53um Malik Jouf number 12 we saw him train he he's he's electric he's absolutely electric
07:59he's more of a winger than a fullback but he can play both both
08:02Ward Prowse and Suchek again they'll try and provide uh some service for a full crew up front
08:08but Bowen is also the star man and the most detailed graphic that we've ever seen on a television screen the
08:12the substitutes today well they can use so many of them I mean if you look at if you look at West Ham
08:19or Kyle Walker Peters is a new addition Manchester United they have so many to choose from
08:24well we showed you a graphic with Bruno Fernandes in a more advanced position
08:27there is a school of thought that in fact he will be one of the two deeper midfield players
08:31yeah it's it's very possible we're gonna need to keep an eye on that because ultimately I think
08:36he's better suited as one of the tens for Ruben Amaran but in this in this game he might just well
08:43sit behind and kind of balance the pace of the game and if the number tens come the start of the season
08:48proper are going to be Cunha and they're going to be in Burma then he's going to have to play deep
08:52and I think that's probably the idea is that's exactly right as soon as Mbumo is in the squad and fit and ready to play
09:02he'll definitely be one of the tens
09:08Tom Bramall is the match referee
09:12last time he appeared in public was to take charge of Manchester United's 2-0 win over Aston Villa
09:17on the final day of last season when if you remember that Morgan Rodgers goal that 0-0 was
09:24I think by general consensus wrongly disallowed and of course that played a part in Aston Villa
09:29not being in the Champions League this coming season
09:34much to ponder for Ruben Amaran
09:38and likewise Graham Potter
09:41now tied by India
09:48in goal Anana here but still recovering from a hamstring injury
09:52the other end of the field it's Alphonse Areola who's lost his main competitor
09:56Lukasz Fabianski one of a number of senior players released by West Ham as they seek to trim their squad
10:03Graham Potter explaining to us yesterday that often he had 25-26 senior players to choose from
10:09and it was just too many to keep them all happy
10:12and he wants to be able to bring through young talent from the famous West Ham Academy
10:17and to do that he needs more space in the squad
10:20so two of last season's underperformers transplanted to the Garden State
10:24New Jersey playing a significant part in the build-up to a new Premier League season which is now just 20 days away
10:32Manchester United in one of their change kits
10:36of all-white
10:43hoping that they've now hit rock bottom
10:45and are on their way up again after their worst season in half a century
10:49here's Jared Bowen
10:52here's Jared Bowen
10:54in towards Niklas Fulkrug the German
10:58Bowen
11:00to confront and dispossess him Matthias Cunha
11:02here's Dorgu
11:08Rasmus Hoyland
11:09up against Max Killmann
11:11inches away from the perfect start
11:14and there is a player who needs to make a big impression
11:18my goodness John I tell you what
11:20Hoyland ran away from Killmann
11:21you see it here
11:23as it breaks
11:24Killmann actually has leverage on him
11:27and Hoyland just pulls away
11:30it's a really good shot
11:31I thought he should
11:32I thought he should take it quickly
11:33and he does
11:34and beats the goalkeeper all ends up
11:36it's a good strike
11:37you see the ball knuckle just stays the other side of the post
11:39really good opportunity
11:41early on for Manchester United
11:43so much speculation as to who
11:44Manchester United might seek to replace
11:46Rasmus Hoyland with
11:48they're in for
11:49Liam de Lappe chose Chelsea
11:50they showed an interest in Victor Jukeres
11:52who
11:53today had his signing by Arsenal confirmed
11:57they brought other attacking talents in
11:58Umbermo and Matthias Cunha
12:03you can see the line of confrontation there
12:05a little bit deeper
12:06from United to conserve a bit of energy
12:10Thomas is so checked
12:13and Fag is up on the near side for offside
12:18you mentioned Cunha coming in
12:20he's on the tip of everybody's tongue
12:21for me
12:22he's brilliant
12:23he's a maverick
12:24he's a type of player
12:25he can start a fight in an empty house
12:26he's always on the edge of things
12:27which I think is a good thing
12:29because at Manchester United
12:30which I know so well
12:31I tried and failed
12:32you have to go there
12:33you have to go there
12:34and you have to have pizzazz
12:36and you have to be able to
12:37puff your chest out
12:38and play on the edge
12:39and he does that
12:40I'm really excited for him
12:42there are one or two maybe
12:43getting a little over excited
12:44and saying look
12:45he could be the equivalent to
12:46Eric Cantona 25 years old
12:48well that's what I think
12:49I think it's the maverick in him
12:50and people are excited about that
12:52but you have to have that edge
12:53when you play for Manchester United
12:54and I do
12:55I really like to sign
12:56given what he's done
12:57in the Premier League
13:00Kobi Maynou
13:01here's Dorgou
13:02there's some signs here
13:04from Manchester United
13:05early on
13:06and that's a free kick
13:19Dorgou had a really good
13:20second half of the season
13:21came back from injury
13:22after he signed
13:23showed signs of exactly
13:25what Ruben Amirim wants
13:26from his wide wing backs
13:28and this is a difficult position
13:29you look how deep already
13:30West Ham are
13:31they have no other choice
13:32they have to set the wall
13:33ten yards away
13:34that pushes them deeper
13:35into their box
13:36they're already starting on
13:37the penalty spot
13:38by the time this ball gets
13:39touched it's going to be
13:40inside the six yard box
13:41if it's a good ball
13:42really difficult position
13:44to deliver that ball
13:45is the skipper Bruno Fernandes
13:51sticks off the head of Tadebo
13:53and is
13:54fluffed by
13:55Areola who follows up
13:56with a foul
13:57and that is a penalty
14:01the horrendous passage
14:02of play
14:04for the French goalkeeper
14:06of West Ham United
14:09it ends with a Manchester United
14:10player down
14:11currently injured
14:12but a penalty
14:13to Manchester United
14:14it's just
14:15it was just messy
14:16from the off
14:17they get in each other's way
14:18it's a laziness there
14:20you just see
14:21Drew the newcomer
14:22get in the way
14:23of his goalkeeper
14:24goalkeeper in all of those
14:25situations
14:26must be stronger
14:27must be louder
14:28and then of course
14:29takes the player down
14:30it's an easy
14:31easy call for the referee
14:32I mean two elements
14:34to his errors there
14:35one spilling it
14:36but secondly
14:37the rash nature
14:38of the challenge
14:39the rash nature
14:40of the challenge
14:41because
14:42the players facing away from him
14:43so he can actually usher him there
14:45he doesn't have to take him down
14:46two years ago
14:47this week
14:48Bruno Fernandes
14:49scored
14:50at MetLife Stadium
14:52playing against Arsenal
15:02and now he repeats defeat
15:04against another London team
15:06it's a bright opening
15:08from Manchester United
15:09and they have a
15:10fifth minute lead
15:11good penalty
15:13really casual
15:14always have confidence
15:15when Bruno Fernandes
15:16steps up
15:17over top of the ball
15:18again here it is
15:19once he fumbles it
15:20which isn't good
15:21you can see him take the
15:24player down there
15:25and it's just
15:26too simple
15:27all those actions
15:28are too simple
15:29for Manchester United
15:30give them that opportunity
15:31they're gonna punish you
15:32now
15:33having started the game
15:34on the front foot
15:35they can go again
15:36they can pressure on you
15:37I think we'll see here
15:38we'll see United up their temple
15:40a little bit
15:43eight in heaven
15:44was the player that was
15:45brought down by Alphonse
15:46Areola
15:47I know it's all too easy to focus on a goalkeeper
15:54but Alphonse Areola deserves some scrutiny
15:57because
15:58it was quite a battle with Lukasz Fabianski
16:00many people consider the veteran pole to be the more reliable goalkeeper
16:03and yet Fabianski was released and Areola remains
16:06yeah and oftentimes there's just there's contractual reasons and so on
16:09and obviously Fabianski was
16:11getting up there in age in terms of
16:13how much you want to keep a goalkeeper on
16:15but
16:16Areola has been has been the goalkeeper
16:18he has had a really good tussle with Fabianski over the years
16:21and won the job outright
16:22but
16:23you have to keep that shirt and continue to play well
16:25and interestingly enough
16:27heaven is a player who I really like
16:29I really like he was in the thick of things
16:31but
16:32ultimately I think
16:33Martinez
16:34will be the left-sided center back
16:36but this kid at 18 years old
16:37he's shown so much
16:38again
16:39talk about Pizazz having to play for Manchester United
16:41he wants the big moments at 18
16:43really special
16:48Killman back to Areola
16:50there's plenty of talk
16:51a growing chatter about Mads Hermanson
16:53the Leicester goalkeeper
16:55relegated at the end of last season
16:57maybe being on the radar for West Ham
17:00he was a goalkeeper I quite liked actually
17:02he's slow to the boil in the Premier League
17:04obviously Leicester
17:05weren't very good as a team
17:06but he made a lot of really good saves
17:08clever with his feet
17:10thought he did
17:11I thought he did really well
17:12in his first Premier League season
17:14Bowen trying to free himself from heaven
17:16supported by Socek
17:20full crew
17:22that's neat
17:24now Malik Jouf
17:27Decisive goalkeeping from Altai Bayern
17:29dear
17:32Jean-Claire Todibo
17:34Ward-Prowse
17:36Wan-Bissaka
17:48Paul Krug is a player we should match
17:49it came with a really good reputation
17:51didn't see the best of them last year
17:52but we were at training recently
17:54just looks really strong and really fit
17:56and really fit
17:57and if he gets service in and around the box
17:58he is a clever clever finisher
18:00I think we'll see the best of him this year
18:02for West Ham
18:03I'm excited for it
18:05Wan-Bissaka
18:06good response
18:07early response
18:16good response from West Ham
18:19after conceding the goal
18:20a bit sloppy
18:21a couple chances
18:22they themselves have gotten gotten in really good areas
18:24but again these two sides tactically match up really well
18:27both in a back three midfields a little bit
18:30a little bit off balance in terms of their numbers in there
18:33so they'll each try and win that midfield battle
18:35but up front trying to play with the two up or one that releases and then you get Bruno Fernandes following in
18:40it's very similar tactically
18:42it's very similar tactically
18:44this is a Manchester United squad
18:46it's very similar tactically
18:47this is a Manchester United squad
18:48it's very similar tactically
18:51it's rash for the latest to depart on a season-long loan deal to Barcelona but
18:58this is a Manchester United squad is very much in the midst of ongoing transition
19:05this rash for the latest to depart on a season-long loan deal to Barcelona but
19:13united squad that's very much in the midst of ongoing transition
19:17marcus rashford the latest to depart on a season-long loan deal to barcelona but still four
19:21in the so-called bomb squad it's been made clear they have no viable future at the club and are
19:27very much up for sale antony and garnacho i think i think it's a it's a brilliant point john you
19:33what people don't understand is it's who are we getting and who are we getting so much of
19:36manchester is who can they get out and it's not easy we saw that with marcus rashford the wages
19:41that he was on he was prepared to see it out and that's really difficult they found a suitor in
19:46barcelona but there's still more there's still more players in this squad some are on the pitch some
19:51are not involved today that will will be departed a couple of them there this is so jayden sancho and
20:00two are on the last year
20:04big names on big wages
20:13part of and part of what last year was it was an exercise in in cleaning house getting ruben abram
20:19in early and trying to figure out what they need where can they improve ruben amram is their guy make
20:26no mistake about that and we're gonna see we're gonna see the best of this team as they start to
20:30add to it and understand his philosophy and really implement and part of that john was so was a
20:35mentality point players wanting to be here wanting to play for the club and that hasn't been the case in
20:41the last couple years now i forget
20:50covering back is ward krauss
20:54seems better established now under graham potter he was allowed to depart on loan to nottingham forest for
20:58the first half of last season seemed a bit strange didn't it because i think he's such a talented
21:03premier league footballer even even as he gets up there in age he still can get about the pitch
21:08really talented in terms of pulling the strings and the balance of that midfield and the set pieces
21:14ward prouse
21:20and appear to be out of play and indeed it was and west town have a corner
21:24and the set pieces as you said i mean he is he is one of the very few players who can just put the
21:29ball on the dime so consistently when he stands over the wall
21:38yes
21:42war prouse
21:50no foul
21:52but just a point of order tim if we're talking premier league you don't put the ball in a dime you
21:56put it on a six point six pins i was going to say that and then i just thought sounds strange come for
22:00me i'll let you say
22:08also Rodriguez not very good at diving as you saw there trying to win a trying to win a foul
22:16ends up kicking another play again Rodriguez probably owes his starting place tonight to the
22:25fact that Edson Alvarez having skipped Mexico to the Gold Cup is still on his way back he
22:30could be available for the second and third fixtures of this summer series that's right
22:34here's another player he's got a lot to prove it went out on loan you know can he play in the back
22:40two is he better shoot it for a back three again grandpa is gonna have to assess that for himself
22:44as well all the way in the nick of time from the lunging challenge of Wan-Bissaka and now Lenny Yoro
22:59death touch by Hoyland Mateus Cunha support from Bruno Fernandes
23:08Hoyland
23:11Jello Bruno Fernandes
23:17Chester just United not looking like a group of players who are still shell-shocked from last season
23:31oh no and Hoyland looks really really sharp I mean he's a willing runner but but the pace
23:39That he's showing at the moment really good
23:45Again the morocco squad got to the semi-final of the last world cup
23:52Making new ground for african football
23:58Remember this particular this summer series tournament as the game starts get stretched and you get your first one or two sprints in
24:04You can see how quickly it's slow. It slows down. They have to be able to control the pace of the game
24:10So that they can stay consistent in the effort
24:22This game comes at the end of what effectively has been the third week of preseason for both these teams
24:29And that's hard because so many of these teams prior to this John have played closed-door games
24:35And takes on a different meaning when you get in the stadium with 50,000 people
24:39And now you really have to turn it on and the atmosphere feels electric
24:42Because really you want to slow pace preseason the game and the permanent summer series doesn't allow for
24:54Patrick dogoo
24:56Bruno fernandez
24:58For good angle of legs with to depo this time the referee waves away any potential claims
25:08But door we did really well there because he's just invite he's invited
25:13To depo to have have a nibble at the ball and really to be honest it's coming together
25:17Dorgo sticks his leg and not for me wasn't a foul there, but we saw
25:21Bruno fernandez will pull on to the side of the ball when it goes to the fullback or when it goes to the
25:26The left side center back he'll pull on to the side of the ball create numbers advantage
25:30And then it's a problem because to depo as that right side center back does not want to come out of his slot there
25:34There's a slap there
25:57Second bite in it
26:04I have to say united are really up for it
26:07pressing well good energy
26:10Here you want hoyland to shoot at this moment even when it falls back to him just to be able to hit the target
26:15doesn't have to be allowed his back lift
26:18Just gets clipped a little bit there, but it's another good opportunity which comes from high energy press and I talked about united being
26:24Deeper in terms of a line of confrontation
26:27When it's when west end have the ball on a goal kick they will come all the way up
26:31There's one of the new signings malik juf
26:41Excellent in a 3-1 friendly win over grasshopper in switzerland last weekend
26:47Yeah, he did and he's a willing crosser of the ball in those moments against the lick
26:51He should have the license to take on like if he loses it. No problem
26:54You want him to always go out to center back put him on an island and go but again good cross for the ball, too
27:01And west hand with no packets up when they get in those moments and killman has the ball
27:18He's not really anyone that wants to come back to the ball and make the game
27:21So it gets a little bit stagnant ball stops when it gets to the center
27:26euro lofted for bruno fernandez
27:30Some spot
27:34You can almost see as the flight of the ball
27:37Takes off bruno fernandez has one one thought in his head
27:41How can I get underneath this to play it first time you can just see his body language trying to play it first time?
27:46He thinks he got clipped from behind. I don't know if it was enough there to call a foul
27:50But as we know from bruno fernandez, he will definitely encourage the referee as much as possible
27:54He's not afraid to pull it back on the ground
28:02What a
28:03Uruguay
28:06Dog
28:10Mateus kunya
28:17So kunya does that really well. We saw that at wolves his stronger foot is his right foot
28:21He's got a really good shot. He is not afraid to pull it back onto his left and have a pop in the end
28:26tame effort
28:27But he does have that in his locker
28:30And we saw that came from from a jared bowen giveaway
28:33Jared bowen is the one tonight that is going to have to get in these moments here and hold the ball
28:38Bison foul there which is good, but that's what normally where
28:41Packata operates and kind of brings other players into the game
28:44He's going to have to get in these moments here. He pulls over into the pocket now. We create the numbers advantage main who runs in
29:09He is offside but he showed the will and the desire to
29:19Make life uncomfortable temporarily for tadibo. That's on it's on every time if they get the runs right they're constantly are getting in behind constantly asking questions
29:27It's really easy. You can see fernandez at a walking pace just offside on the shoulder there
29:32If they get that right they're in and they'll continue to try that ball because they have the time in the space
29:38And don't forget they truck jared bowen right now isn't able to hold the ball
29:41They trust that bruno fernandez is going to get on the ball get his head up shoulder squared and play forward
29:46That means they can they can vacate the midfield knowing they're not going to give the ball
29:52We've heard so much about
29:54The favored system of ruben amarin, but are we seeing a little bit more subtlety slightly more fluency to the the way it's being imposed tonight?
30:01Yeah, less rigid and that's that's only a good thing
30:03I think as a manager you have to set your stall out keep things really tight and then add the creativity as time goes on
30:10I think we've seen a little bit of that last year. He's trying to get his point across play one way
30:17May new
30:26Yeah, right idea right run
30:28West Ham just got it right kept the line high which meant hoyland had to just delay a little bit
30:42In the direction of the first cooling break through the first half we will pause for three minutes
30:51no, no, no
30:53Come on
30:58Very similarly to man united west hammer trying to work that work out their new manager as well trying to figure out
31:04Exactly what type of pockets he wants them to play in in terms of the pace of the game angles and just getting wrong at the moment
31:12Bruno fernandez
31:14That's a mere flick of the scalp of the scalp of Bruno fernandez
31:25Nice town finished one place and one point above manchester united last season
31:41Actually by dint of winning two of their final three fixtures to move up from 17th to 14th
31:46That's
31:49Five wins in 20 games in the league after christmas this time it's bowing who's outside yeah a year to forget for both of them aren't
32:00Graham potter arrived on january the ninth
32:03Yeah, just you go he goes early
32:10Delick does a really good job of trying to time the run while still dropping and just catches him offside
32:17You got the chance to sit down at some length with jared bowen yesterday
32:21Came across as a particularly thoughtful individual very aware of his responsibilities as captain of the club
32:26Yeah, I really enjoy spending time with him and listening to me. He also is aware of his responsibility
32:30He's aware of his journey as well, and he knows where he's come from in the lower leagues of football and doesn't take
32:37The premier league for granted whatsoever
32:40He was from a farming family in a small market town in
32:44Herefordshire by the name of lemster
32:47I was talking very fondly of his first eight professional games in the colors of hereford united in the lower leagues
32:53All right, we've reached the cooling break and we've reached it with the game interestingly poised manchester united in the ascendancy
33:00Leading through a bruno fernandez penalty and I think fair to say tim howard playing pretty well
33:06Playing really well. You can just see the energy
33:08They've earned the cooling break because i'll tell you what manchester i've been on the front foot even when they've sat in the deeper block
33:14When the ball comes into their to their pockets or into certain channels they are right up against these west ham players
33:20And if you're west ham, what are you thinking at the moment?
33:23Well
33:24They seem a bit stretched but beyond that when when they're playing at a walking pace and at times
33:29They are because manchester united are inviting them on to them
33:32They're getting lulled to sleep a little bit if manchester united drops deep and tries to play these two banks of four plus
33:38Plus two you have to be like worker bees and they're constantly recycling your runs
33:42Upping the tempo right now
33:44West hammer base is saying okay, you're gonna let us play in front of you and we'll we'll accept that so
33:49There's a little bit more that in terms of pace and tempo that needs to go into this
33:53I've always wondered tim when you get a group of premier league footballers together and they're three weeks into preseason
33:58I mean are some of them hating it and some of them loving it
34:01if you're me i'm hating it because
34:04Preseason was always a pain for me but
34:06Ultimately if you commit to the work which so many of these teams do
34:10Then it's again it's a process and a journey you realize that each training session each game is another building block into what you what
34:17When once the whistle blows in the premier season starts there's no looking back
34:20So all of this is about the building phase and the managers will tell you that
34:24Well part of that building phase for manchester united was the penalty by which they lead and this was the incident that created the penalty kick
34:30Yeah, it's a really good angle
34:31It's just the goalkeeper in every sense of the word has to be stronger there has to clear his lines be louder and
34:38Not make compound our errors compound errors lead to goals and you saw that there
34:42It's a really good penalty from bruno families but that's bread and butter for him
34:49So that's the way of it
34:51The three minutes for this cooling break will be tagged on as stoppage time at the end of the first half
34:57Maiden heaven there the player who was brought down by the flailing alphonse areola
35:06Watching these two sides square up again
35:08With west ham having done the double over manchester united in the premier league last season including a 2-0 win at old trafford close to the end of the season
35:17may the 11th
35:20So secured a 92nd minute winner in the autumn when the sides met at the london stadium
35:27I found it interesting with full crew he's got even early on 20 minutes in 25 minutes and he's getting frustrated
35:33He's your he's your number nine highest up to pitch and he keeps dropping you can see him here dropping to get the ball because he just hasn't
35:39Been fed he hasn't gotten any service needs touches on the ball. It's not a great thing for west ham
35:46Rodriguez so check
36:03I mean that's that's good pressure that's good pressure from west ham again. They have to up the pace of the game
36:23They want to get anything from it because they're getting pressed here
36:26Do really really well at that point to get out of it
36:35But now they build you can see you can see from the pictures how stretched the pitch is
36:39They can play between lines get that back three or back four up. It gives them a better opportunity
36:45James WordPress
36:54James world cross
37:00Guido rodriguez
37:15He can tell the many players want heaven to get the ball get turned and drive forward
37:29He's looking. He's looking back in square too often, which happens with young players
37:33They want to be bold and take the ball and drive forward
37:36Amad
37:43Finding de Ligt
37:48Here's Bruno Fernandes
37:50Killman
37:55Seen a lot of this, players not on the same page
37:58One wants to come, one wants to go
38:00And signals are getting crossed
38:02We see it with West Ham, we see it a little bit
38:03We'll unite less with United
38:04But you still see it
38:05And that's part of the progression of only being three weeks into preseason
38:10They're defended by a gap
38:19I just wonder if it's by design
38:21They started with two out full crew
38:22And bowen and bone was the one dropping in he wasn't holding the ball
38:25Now it looks like a little bit
38:27Full crew is the one who's dropping I think that happened after
38:30The drinks break after the cooling break
38:33We'll see if that continues that might be a little bit of a trend that
38:37Graham Potter thought I can change this up a little bit
38:39A little bit
38:41Ward-Prowse
38:43Can't quite get there hangs out a leg commits a foul free kick
38:48Nearly nearly nearly a perfect ball there
38:56It's what we know
38:57Ward-Prowse possesses he has that in his locker just kind of feels it in behind one center back
39:02In front of the other one
39:04And full group tried to make up the distance just couldn't quite make it
39:08I can't really make it
39:33Yeah.
39:39Bruno Fernandes.
39:44It's Lenny Yoro.
39:50And Manchalo.
39:52Bruno Fernandes again.
39:58For the pop.
39:59If you do that and you can come closer, you can hit the target, it keeps West Ham honest.
40:07They have to come out to this from now on.
40:09When they come out to that, you'll see Bruno Fernandes then say, thank you very much next time.
40:14Slip a pass in behind.
40:16In the start of that buildup, though, one thing that stands out about Cunha is he finds pockets so well.
40:22Yes, he's uber talented.
40:23Yes, he has tons of sublime skill.
40:25But he finds pockets in which to operate constantly, always on the move.
40:30He's special in that regard.
40:55Rodriguez.
41:01To Debo.
41:04He's been to stretch a few times today.
41:09Again, that's just about getting your legs, finding the pace of the game.
41:12Getting that first touch right.
41:14That's what they're all trying to work out in these early moments of preseason.
41:24United have done a good job of playing through pressure, but I still think West Ham can step up the pressure, take risks.
41:29They have enough numbers at the back.
41:31They're either two, three versus two or three versus three.
41:33That's plenty of cover.
41:34Refusing to give the ball back.
41:43I don't think it's going to be fortunate for that.
41:47Delaying the restart.
41:48Yeah, referee, I thought the referee might let that go, given that it's preseason, but he's in midseason form as well.
42:01It is a book.
42:02He can't keep hold of it too long.
42:07You just see here, Ward-Prowse, he's signaling to his team, press, keep him in.
42:12This is where you want.
42:13The ball is right by the corner flight.
42:15This is a perfect opportunity to set your press, win the ball back, keep him in that spin cycle, so to speak.
42:34Paul Kroos.
42:37Juan Bissaka.
42:40It's his former club.
42:42It's Thomas Sochek.
42:45And hooked goalwards.
42:49James Ward-Prowse looking plaintively at the referee, but it's behind for a goal kick.
42:53Really well done.
42:53Really well done from West Ham.
42:55We're able to, again, win that throne from deep position, get the press on, and Sochek, you know what he's trying to do here.
43:00Punch it back in with power.
43:03Ward-Prowse swivels on it.
43:04It was goal-bound, but ends up getting the deflection off his own player.
43:10James Ward-Prowse, the son of a barrister.
43:12For 12 seasons, he represented Southampton with great distinction, even though his family are all Portsmouth supporters.
43:19They want to be part of that family.
43:21I mean, they must have, must have been really difficult for anybody who knows Portsmouth-Southampton rivalry.
43:26Imagine if that's a barrister, it might have been a rather argumentative household.
43:33I think you're right.
43:35I'm sure they came around.
43:36I'm sure they supported Southampton.
43:38Yes, there may be another way.
43:47Rodriguez.
43:48Again.
43:48Long, long, long!
43:50Just wondering, Howard hasn't come out of his slot very much.
43:57I wonder if they can get a bit more from him or if that's a type of thing tactical thing from Graham Potter because as we've seen with
44:04Yarrow and heaven when they get the ball they drive forward. We're not seeing that from Tebow or from McGeer
44:15How much are we allowed to read into what we're seeing today? What how can we interpret it at the midway point of preseason?
44:22I think you can I think you can interpret it
44:24as as
44:27This is what the look of the team will be it'll be cleaner
44:30Be more concise in terms of the passing and the fluidity, but this is who these teams are or what they're showing us they want to be
44:39Grandpa was telling us yesterday how keen he is that West Ham become a side that actually make the running in some games
44:44Try and impose themselves on the opposition rather than just waiting and being reactable and he was realistic
44:49That's a very difficult thing because he also said not a ton of teams
44:52I'll be able to do that. They're gonna have to grow into that as the season goes on
44:57Yeah
45:01And again Mateus Cunha
45:04Snappled it back from Ward-Trouse. It's a corner
45:06He lives up to the billing he really really truly does this is the past there, but there's a question. There's a question
45:16That shot again, it's goal bound. It's hit with laces. It's a good block in the end
45:22Acuna shown his intent
45:2484 million dollars
45:27from Wolverhampton Wanderers
45:29You prefer that in sterling sixty two and a half million pounds
45:42Bruno Fernandes
45:44Good effort
45:45Lovely delivery of the set piece Lenny Oro is saying that his shirt was being pulled
45:51Getting much response from the referee welcome to the party everyone shirts getting pulled there. It's
45:55That's
45:57Let's hear the zonal and when you're zonal you're stood still players are gonna get a run on you
46:01In fact, Lenny Oro might think he should do better there because I'll tell you what he gets a clean look at and just glance it past the post
46:25And that's what happens when when the when heaven has the ball and either Cunha or Bruno Fernandes pulls on to that side the strong side
46:42It then allows Hoyland up the pitch to be one for one right and it puts Kilman in a really tough position
46:49Does he step or does he try and go with it if he goes with he's gonna get pressure?
46:53Which ultimately has to give away a throw and I'm pretty much every play
47:00Shins of Rodriguez
47:23You can see what these United players there's a trust that they're willing to give each other the ball under pressure
47:41In tough moments with a player on their back. They're willing to stick it in and they'll take the ball
47:46That helps break the pressure
47:53Guarte
47:55Amagello
47:58Offside
48:02Sweet move nonetheless
48:03I'll tell you what John
48:05It deserves so much better
48:07I mean
48:08Guarte
48:09Dives into the tackle with two feet
48:11Wins the ball
48:13Just here
48:14Dives in with two feet
48:15Little nutmeg there
48:16And you can just see the run was coming
48:18It was coming and then he released it
48:20Just a half a step
48:21Too slow
48:22But I'll tell you what
48:23The tension was there really good build-up love that for Manchester United
48:26From Manchester United
48:43Of course the riders at everything we say about both these teams is that the squads that they
48:47Have by the end of the transfer window may be markedly different to those at their disposal here
48:52That's what it feels like and that's the difficult you asked me the question before
48:55That's the difficult part about preseason
48:57The managers implementing his style and the players are trying to particularly the players who know they're gonna start
49:02There's six or seven they know they're the top players at the club
49:06Ultimately it's gonna be five or six that come through the door. They're gonna have to sort of reintegrate them or integrate them into the squad so
49:12Preseason an interesting exercise but United seem to be going through it quite well
49:21They were fairly tame in that opening fixture which was against Leeds United in Stockholm last weekend but a whole lot better here
49:28Yeah, look a confident bunch
49:31Yeah, look a confident bunch
49:41And the Rabona cross by Bruno Fernandes which probably has drawn a bigger roar of approval from the crowd than anything else today
49:47Yeah, I mean some of these players are just special. He's one of them
49:50And if I tried to do that I'd fall over so and the fact that he's willing to pull it out this earlier in preseason is impressive
50:02Yeah, I have to say I don't recall too many Rabona clearances on your part, Tim
50:06I mean it's special. I love it. I mean the audacity of it. Really good from Bruno Fernandes
50:12I mean Bruno Fernandes
50:15Ended up on your backside. Not wrong. Not wrong at all
50:25Say my hamstrings the little soldiers looking at it. I bet it is. I bet it is
50:32Sam are just all all across the board sloppy that they're having to play too many straight balls
50:36You've seen a ton of them
50:39Maynard's pressure is too much. They play a straight ball and they're outnumbered
50:43And it comes right back at them. It's been it's been a little bit of a difficult first half for West Ham
50:48Need to be a bit braver in possession taking the ball between lines
50:52Making things happen in this position have to go
50:55And Aaron Wan-Bissaka does go
50:57And DeLicht comes back
50:59Just about manages to keep his arm and his hand out of the way
51:02Although the question was asked by West Ham
51:05And it's a corner kick
51:07Yeah, I think luckily for
51:10DeLicht is no no VAR
51:12Or goal line technology today. So as much as West Ham think that was a handball
51:17It won't be cleared and checked. It'll just be play on
51:19It'll just be play on
51:33I mean again are there there's zonal is as West Ham was zonal so you have to be careful these runs
51:38West Ham have some big players
51:39Or perhaps at the corner full creep the header so check the overhead to Debo unable to turn it in
51:46The flags up for offside in any case
51:56The good thing for Sam's that have a few chances from set pieces so at least they know at 1-0 they could still keep themselves
52:03In the game if they were able to get up the pitch enough to put themselves in good positions
52:07In the game if he could still keep in it
52:10Okay
52:13Jair
52:19Jair
52:23Jair
52:25Jair
52:28Jair
52:30Jair
52:31Jair
52:33Jair
52:34Jair
52:35Jair
52:36We see it too often players stand off the crosser. They have to get down and close the cross
52:48Particularly against this West Ham team because again I mentioned Fulcrook so so good in and around the penalty area with service
52:54The heat thrives off service
52:56So if United can starve them of that they help themselves try and keep this clean sheet in town Bowen
53:03Skipping past beyond heaven
53:06And it's Delicke behind again
