00:00:00I have to say Bowen is so underrated in those positions he's got really tidy feet
00:00:09in and around the penalty area with players kind of bearing down on him wanting to tackle
00:00:14not afraid to touch touch him he has his really tight feet
00:00:17where he can get away from and create a yard of space for himself
00:00:20it's as good a sight of the Manchester United goal as the Hammers have had
00:00:38I think if he had it back you try and put a little bit more power on it see here
00:00:42they've been dangerous and just tries to loop it over I know it's a little bit
00:00:46behind him in the end probably the bounce and the spin on a bit of a dry pitch if
00:00:50he gets a little bit more pace and power on that he beats finder probably levels
00:00:55it there but again they've been dangerous they've been dangerous on most of their
00:00:58corners and set pieces so you can see him kind of grow into life knowing that they
00:01:04can they can get something from there
00:01:07who are take the test Cunha
00:01:13Who are take the test Cunha
00:01:28Wait way too heavy of a ball, but you see there
00:01:31Taddebo comes out of the slot to get Cunha because no one else is able to step up to him
00:01:34He just leaves him in the dust and then that was the space that was vacated by Taddebo unfortunately just a too heavy of the ball
00:01:41Surrendered by Malik Jouf to Hoiland
00:01:45Maynou
00:01:57Anticipating three additional minutes
00:01:59Make up for the cooling break
00:02:05Final Premier League is so fascinating because we're so excited about Malik Jouf and he's and he's he's electric so to speak
00:02:20But people find it really difficult to kind of bet in and for inner Premier League
00:02:24I
00:02:29Know you were a different case because you were a goalkeeper
00:02:32But how long did it take before you felt at home in the Premier League? Wow, it's a great question
00:02:35I mean, yeah, I think I think years a few years really
00:02:40Just kind of feel like you belong you're up to the pace of the game, you know, maybe maybe
00:02:44Two years for most players that you know here to you start to start to kind of find your feet
00:02:49But it's really really difficult particularly for goalkeepers get such a rough-and-tumble league
00:02:53But all around I mean, I think we'll see again. We'll see the best of of Jouf, but
00:02:58You realize in these moments how difficult it is
00:03:06Jouf
00:03:12That's a Manchester United free kick and that's okay. I said it before I want my wingers to get the ball and to attack
00:03:19And every now and again, you know, okay, you're gonna get stuck and you're gonna lose the ball more often than not though
00:03:22You're putting pressure on the pullback because what I would say John is if you pass the ball you go backwards
00:03:27You're actually letting the fullback and defender off the hook because they do not want to be ran
00:03:49I haven't seen much of that from Manchester United kicking it long. Everything's been
00:04:01Cutting down and play bowing
00:04:09That's a platform for giallo who are take
00:04:12It's a good tackle in the end by yaro they were off to the races there
00:04:22That's next door isn't it the racist better than this it is it is indeed I've been a few times
00:04:28And emerge poorer than you went in presumably forget well you got that right here
00:04:36Dogu
00:04:38Tadebo's challenge is a foul
00:04:42Manchester United are going to end what for them has been a decent half with a free kick
00:04:50Yeah tables found itself thought he thought he just got away with it could go either way
00:04:55I did think it was a foul but he's had he's had he's had a really difficult first half because he's had to have
00:05:00He's had so much in front of him
00:05:02He's gotten attracted to it and when he gets attracted to it ball goes in behind I'll tell you what this is not what you want
00:05:07If you're West Ham not what you want you have to defend this really really well
00:05:12Goalkeeper are those only got one in the wall
00:05:15Which is probably right because he needs more bodies in and around the goal really difficult to defend here
00:05:20This is an enticing position indeed for Bruno Fernandes
00:05:26He's played it square for Amadjalo
00:05:30And that is the final act of an entertaining first half at MetLife and Manchester United lead through a Bruno Fernandes penalty after a moment of madness from Alphonse Areola
00:05:39Manchester United one West Ham nil
00:05:49And so we can get a half-time interpretation from someone centrally involved by going down pitch side and joining Rebecca Lowe
00:05:55Thank you. I'm with Ruben Almarim Ruben great start. What did you like about that first half?
00:06:01I think we we we defend well
00:06:05Good transitions
00:06:07I think we we need more long possessions
00:06:11Sometimes we want to finish the play really fast, so we have a lot to improve
00:06:15But I really like the effort of the guys the way that they recover position when we lose the ball
00:06:22And I feel that they are focused on the game
00:06:25How many substitutions second half are you planning a lot of changes second half?
00:06:28We are going to these guys are going to play 70 minutes then we change the team
00:06:34Because in this in this moment is supposed to increase a little bit the load
00:06:39But after 70 minutes we are going to change the whole team
00:06:43Thank you Ruben. We'll let you go. Thank you very much indeed
00:06:45It's a Bruno Fernandes penalty
00:06:47That is the difference right now as Manchester United lead West Ham United by a goal to nil here at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey
00:06:54Graham Lusso Robbie Earl after the break
00:07:07New Jersey 13 days ago. It was the venue as Chelsea won the Club World Cup
00:07:11And next July the eyes of the world will be set upon this place for the World Cup Final
00:07:1882 and a half thousand capacity around about 50,000 inside the stadium this evening
00:07:25As West Ham take to the field
00:07:28Manchester United
00:07:30To understand from their head coach Ruben Amarim are going to let most of their players play around about 70 minutes before he makes wholesale substitutions
00:07:37There is the capacity for up to 15 subs per team
00:07:44So that could be interesting Tim Howard
00:07:46It will be indeed
00:07:48Relying on you with your pen and paper to keep me on track with that
00:07:52Rasmus Hoyland, Mateus Cunha
00:07:55One established at the club, the other a star newly arrived
00:07:59Both have had their first half moments
00:08:01First half moments
00:08:16Personnel as before
00:08:18The rash of substitutions
00:08:20Yet to arrive
00:08:22Manchester United a goal up and West Ham seeking to retrieve their position
00:08:27And it is in there in the darker kit
00:08:31They've got us underway and Bruno Fernandes gets an early second half touch
00:08:35The scorer of the only goal from the penalty spot in just the fifth minute
00:08:39And Alphonse Areola had dropped her ball, delivered in his vague direction and then
00:08:45Clattered into even heaven in trying to retrieve it
00:08:49This is Yoro
00:08:51Jouro
00:08:57Jouf
00:09:05What United are going to have to work out is
00:09:07I don't believe a team can press for 90 minutes
00:09:10Like maybe one or two teams in the world can do that
00:09:12And United were on top of the game then they kind of fell off the pace just a little bit
00:09:16So really what they're gonna have to figure out is okay
00:09:19We're up one nil pace of the set of the first half dropped off a bit. No problem
00:09:23How do we pick the tempo up again in the second half?
00:09:26Start on the front foot put pressure on West Ham
00:09:29They're United are clearly the better team
00:09:31They just have to continue to find their moments to press the game
00:09:36Maynou
00:09:3720 days until the start of the Premier League
00:09:45Which opens up at Anfield on a Friday night UK time
00:09:49Liverpool against Bournemouth
00:09:51Sure to be a hugely emotional occasion
00:09:52Exactly three weeks until West Ham start the competition up in the Northeast at Sunderland
00:10:00Three weeks tomorrow Manchester United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford for their opening gambit
00:10:06As you said I've always remembered there was never enough time there was never enough time in preseason
00:10:16As they do they take it short here
00:10:19Cunha
00:10:21Bruno Fernandes
00:10:22That way by Aaron Wan-Bissaka
00:10:36Dorku
00:10:42Cunha
00:10:43Hoyland
00:10:45Those defensive set pieces where West Ham bring everybody back
00:10:49Favors United because you don't have to be good the service doesn't have to be good
00:10:52Once they clear the ball out you just regain it and you have all 11 West Ham players in the box
00:10:57You have to keep one or two players up the pitch all the way up the pitch just to keep United honest
00:11:02I know defensively you try and plug every hole
00:11:05When it comes to a corner kick but you have enough bodies to do that as well as you drag some players back at the pitch
00:11:09You know if you put two up they have to leave three back to defend and that helps you in your defensive area
00:11:21Manchester United were the first of the four teams to arrive on American soil earlier this week
00:11:25They traveled on Tuesday that place themselves in Chicago
00:11:30This town flew over
00:11:34A regular flight rather than a charter on Wednesday
00:11:36On Wednesday
00:11:55Really good really good spot and really good run
00:11:58From Cunha and Dorku Dorku checked the ball and took off and credit
00:12:02Aaron Wan-Bissaka just sticks a leg out there because otherwise Dorku is off to the races
00:12:09Killman
00:12:11Bruno Fernandes in on goal
00:12:17Amat Yalu
00:12:19Kobi Maynou
00:12:21And Alphonse Areola has in part made up for his first half flounder
00:12:25Well, I was gonna say
00:12:27Max Killman has had his hands full with Hoyland I mean just watch
00:12:32Killman's first the ball but because he has the physicality of Hoyland
00:12:36Bruno Fernandes there
00:12:38Is able to snip in but just gets it caught under his feet
00:12:40I think he's caught in two minds
00:12:41I do I John I think he's caught in two minds
00:12:43He think he wants to dink the ball
00:12:44Dink the ball and then when he gets his eyes up he sees areola he tries to slot it and it's just the balls behind them
00:12:55Bruno Fernandes
00:12:57De Ligt
00:12:59Watching save
00:13:02Cunha
00:13:06And there's to re-deliver
00:13:10In heaven with the challenge
00:13:12Or how to play for a goal
00:13:14I mean John it's a problem when you keep with people
00:13:17Eleven back because you can't get out even if you clear the ball
00:13:21It's a good save in the end
00:13:22Just as able to get it away
00:13:24Just as able to get it away
00:13:26And then Cunha with the shot back in but they kept recycling the pressure
00:13:30West Ham didn't do a better job
00:13:32Obviously they set that up tactically and they work on their set pieces so
00:13:36They see some positivity in it but they're bringing pressure onto themselves
00:13:40And this hasn't worked either for West Ham
00:13:42These direct balls up the pitch they haven't been able to hold onto a single one
00:13:46Cunha trying to free himself from Guido Rodriguez
00:13:49Bruno Fernandes
00:13:53By the way Cunha is so strong we talk about him being a maverick and so talented
00:14:00But he's strong as well
00:14:05Yeah, he buzzes he buzzes about gets in pockets but even then we saw Johnny rides a tackle
00:14:10I mean he probably went 10 or 15 yards
00:14:13Holding off the tackle
00:14:1426 years of age
00:14:1915 caps for Brazil as played in Switzerland in Germany in Spain and in the black country all the Hampton Wanderers
00:14:2792 appearances 33 goals 17 of them last season
00:14:31He had a really good season he's been kind of building up to that and there's a perfect player profile at that age
00:14:37I mean someone you can invest in the money wasn't too big you get dividends from that
00:14:43Bruno Fernandes
00:14:45Picks his spot
00:14:47Picks his spot
00:14:5311 footed aerial
00:14:55Bamboozled and perplexed
00:14:57And the one saving grace of last season
00:15:02For Manchester United
00:15:05Offers hope of better things this time around
00:15:09That ball is just not on you cannot play it into the middle of the pitch
00:15:14They're waiting for that
00:15:17They're inviting that
00:15:18If the players not coming all the way to your face you can't play them the ball and that's
00:15:23That's training ground stuff for Bruno Fernandes
00:15:26I mean the ball's just at his feet
00:15:28It's steady
00:15:30It's a dead ball in a sense and it just
00:15:32Spins it past the goalkeeper
00:15:34I mean
00:15:35Really West Ham have been their own worst enemy
00:15:37In the breakdown of some of the things they've done defensively
00:15:42So a brace for Bruno Fernandes
00:15:47And West Ham
00:15:48Now faced with a somewhat more mountainous task if they're to play their way back into this
00:15:56And all that goal is going to do
00:15:58Is just up to tempo from from United you know these players know they're probably getting
00:16:0370 minutes which another another 15-17 minutes they're just going to keep pressing
00:16:09The energy is going to be high they're going to be looking for more goals
00:16:13See it there
00:16:18Manchester United emboldened
00:16:25They're not able to say that very often last season
00:16:30It's good to see it's good to see them playing with confidence
00:16:33As you know it's a heavy shirt to wear
00:16:36You have to you have to have enough confidence to do that
00:16:39And they were short of it last season right now
00:16:41They look at it
00:16:42Forcing the referees hand in persuading him that he was clipped let's have another look at that second Bruno Fernandes goal
00:16:58Yeah, I mentioned it it's
00:17:01The ball sticks still
00:17:03West Ham stay off of them
00:17:04It just picks out a corner. It's really really good finish in the end
00:17:09And there is the new West Ham goalkeeping coach the man charged with trying to improve Alphonse Areola or indeed anyone else that comes in Caspar Ankergren
00:17:17Former keeper for Leeds and Brighton
00:17:19Yeah, I don't envy him because I can remember my goalkeeper coach every time I did something wrong
00:17:23My goalkeeper coach was the one who got a talking to even even though he didn't do anything so it's an unenviable position
00:17:31Who felt the power of your tongue then?
00:17:34Well most of my most of my center backs are the referee or who who knows anyone who would listen and the goalkeeping coaches?
00:17:41Who were they? Chris would Chris was he was he was one he was one of the best he was one of the best in the business
00:17:47I had him at Everton for eight years
00:17:49Still very fond of him friendly as well. Yeah, and he coached the u.s. Men's national team do keepers didn't he did indeed? Yeah, the 2014 World Cup
00:18:01Very distinguished goalkeeper during his own playing career
00:18:05He was never shy about telling me about his records either
00:18:14That's indeed you're not shy about telling us about yours correct, which is
00:18:19Fair enough part and parcel
00:18:33Full crook
00:18:37As West Ham trying to find their way back in this game with possession has to be measured and intentional
00:18:42Can't just be passing it to a claret shirt for the sake of it
00:18:46They have to be trying to find pockets get on the half turn and get forward and they haven't done that just enough yet
00:18:52Here are these moments
00:18:54Thomas so check
00:18:59Rodriguez
00:19:01Joof
00:19:05That's a little sense there of his spirit of adventure
00:19:08Go kick
00:19:13And that's what you want you want driving at players spinning around the corner maybe just out in the end
00:19:20Hard to tell from that angle to lick does a good job
00:19:23But I think I think juice gonna be a really good player
00:19:26Do you think he'll be better behaved than the previous L.A.S. Juve to play in the Premier League the one from Bolton?
00:19:30I was worried you'd bring that up. I have a feeling he might be just
00:19:35More well behaved
00:19:37He was an extraordinary character and as Juve
00:19:40At Bolton Wanderers
00:19:41Speaking of Mavericks
00:19:43Yes, you know he became an international diplomat in the most unlikely career change ever
00:19:47I did not know and that is very surprising
00:19:49It's very surprising
00:20:04Taken a particular interest in Senegal's foreign policy in that period but I'd be interested to know
00:20:09What he was advocating
00:20:11You and me both
00:20:20Wan-Bissaka
00:20:28Ward-Prowse
00:20:30Yes, too much on the pass to be ideal for him
00:20:34And with the one thing to lick does really well is he gets across
00:20:38Gets his body across in moments like that we just saw it twice now
00:20:41In the last couple of minutes in these crossing position he senses danger in the box
00:20:44Gets his body across it and whether that's a lunge or a block or a tackle does really well to kind of sniff out the danger
00:20:50Sniff out the danger
00:21:04Maynou
00:21:05To what I think they knew the intention was here but quite lucky to get around the corner because a little bit of mistouch
00:21:20And Rodriguez I think is lucky to get away with not getting a booking because
00:21:24Maynou was away
00:21:25What do you think of these stories that suggest that copy Maynou may be sacrificed may be sold by Manchester United?
00:21:32But that's it if that's the you know from a PSR standpoint would be really sad because
00:21:37He's such an incredible talent
00:21:39I mean he's young
00:21:41He's hungry he's England international those are not the players
00:21:45John you want to be selling those aren't the players we've seen down the years with permanently getting sold
00:21:49But yeah, that would be interesting if he was sacrificed
00:21:51In this age of PSR as a home-produced player he represents pure profit
00:21:57In the financial books
00:22:08Just United as you well know Tim have always been one to give their young players a chance and so many have come through the academy
00:22:13Yeah, that's what I mean. It's it were the first ones, you know under Sir Alex Ferguson where they said you can't win with the kids and he won with the kids and so
00:22:21Be a real shame to be honest and Kobe may know if he does go gosh is gonna be a heck of a player for someone else but at the moment
00:22:29Holding down the middle of midfield for Manchester United
00:22:31I have a proud record of having included an academy player in every matchday squad since the 1930s
00:22:40Jared Bowen off balance and off target
00:22:45Just just stretching there at the end it's a good little interplay actually this is why you have
00:22:49This is why you have two strikers this full crews just able to kind of be on the same line as Bowen little flick and
00:22:54In the end just behind
00:22:57An armada of
00:22:59Flailing legs
00:23:01If you could have that pen and paper ready Tim because we've got 11 Manchester United subs upcoming
00:23:09And the good thing is some of those are household names so we'll be okay
00:23:11Very sizable squad well in excess of 30 players
00:23:23Unlike Everton who've only managed to muster 23 for this tournament
00:23:28Tells you where David Moyes men are in terms of their recruitment
00:23:33Dorgu
00:23:40Everton are West Ham's next opponents in Chicago
00:23:44On Wednesday
00:23:49I find it so fascinating that all these teams are at the same stage of preseason but not in the same stage of recruitment
00:23:55Cunha
00:24:03Bruno Fernandes
00:24:05When you bring it back to Cunha certain players just glide across the grass
00:24:10He's one of them and you'll hear us up here sometimes say the player glides and he just looks like he's not even touching down
00:24:15Just skips across the grass
00:24:16Just wanted right now at 2-0 up this is Manchester United I have a feeling that with the subs coming
00:24:29They might just up the temple a little bit those those subs are going to be hungry for
00:24:32match time match fitness getting more into the game because right now this current team
00:24:36feels the 2-0 lead they feel that they're comfortable they're waiting for West Ham to
00:24:39Daring them to come out of their slots and quite frankly West Ham aren't doing that
00:24:42Daring them to come out of their slots and quite frankly West Ham aren't doing that
00:24:45I'm not wrong about the stature of some of those players who are shortly to come on
00:24:48I'm not going to move on
00:24:49No, I'm not going to move on
00:24:51No, I'm not going to move on
00:24:53And I'm not going to move on
00:24:54No, I'm going to move on
00:24:56No, I'm not going to move on
00:24:57No, no, no
00:24:58No, I'm not going to move on
00:24:59No, I'm not going to move on
00:25:01No, I'm not going to move on
00:25:02Just up the temple a little bit
00:25:03Those subs are going to be hungry for
00:25:04Match time match fitness
00:25:05Getting more into the game because right now this current team
00:25:09Feels the 2-0 lead
00:25:10They feel that they're comfortable
00:25:11They're waiting for West Ham to
00:25:12That includes Casemiro, 77 caps for Brazil, and regular England centre-back for many recent seasons, Harry Maguire.
00:25:25I'm sure there's another who will be joining us.
00:25:30Hey, hey!
00:25:32Hey, hey!
00:25:34Bruno! Bruno!
00:25:42He joined us a little late and missed our preamble just prior to kick-off.
00:25:51Both reiterating that Brian Umbermo, the most recent signing for Manchester United,
00:25:55not involved this evening as he builds his match fitness.
00:25:58There's an expectation he'll be part of the squad for the remaining two games in America.
00:26:04Bowen up against Heaven and scoring beautifully.
00:26:08That's more like it from Jared Bowen and West Ham.
00:26:12And he's just lit up their life.
00:26:15Oh, West Ham!
00:26:25This feels easy to say. We talked about get on the half turn, drive forward.
00:26:28Hasn't happened for West Ham. This is one of those moments.
00:26:31But this is the profile Jared Bowen wants to be in.
00:26:34Because he will go on his left, onto his left foot when he can.
00:26:38But I tell you what, if you show him down the outside, in and around the penalty area, he'll take it.
00:26:43And he can score with his right foot.
00:26:44That's a perfect goal, as far as West Ham's concerned.
00:26:48Goalkeeper Binder never had a chance.
00:26:51A really, really well-worked goal from West Ham.
00:26:54From Tomaszuszczyk to their star man, Jared Bowen.
00:26:58And Amorim already launching the inquiry as to what went wrong and how that was allowed to happen.
00:27:09Jared Bowen, who ended last season amidst a barrage of goals.
00:27:15He scored in the final four games of the last campaign.
00:27:20He's also scored in three of his last four appearances against Manchester United.
00:27:25And all of those have led to victories for the Hammers.
00:27:29Such a talent, it's easy to root for as well.
00:27:32We spoke earlier in the game.
00:27:34Just a hard-worker, humble captain, leads from the front by example.
00:27:38And that's another perfect example of that.
00:27:45The craziest thing about football is, I mentioned they haven't had a ton of these opportunities, West Ham,
00:28:00to get on the half-turn, but just that one moment will give them momentum to do it again.
00:28:06Well, here comes the reserve cavalry.
00:28:12And sensibly, I think they'll make this coincide with the cooling break,
00:28:19rather than waiting another two and a half minutes.
00:28:22Because the sheer admin of 11 substitutes arriving at the same time
00:28:26is going to take up plenty of the officials' attention.
00:28:42So, an opportunity to take on board cocos amounts of fluid.
00:28:57And for those who've been in the shadows, warming up, this is their entry point for the evening.
00:29:05This is a Manchester United-in squad that embraces the experienced and the famous.
00:29:12And also one or two that we've not seen very often before.
00:29:16So, in no particular order.
00:29:22Toby Collier is going to come on, and Matthijs DeLicht is going off.
00:29:28Diego Dalo is replacing Bruno Fernandes.
00:29:32These are not direct swaps, but in terms of players coming on and off.
00:29:37This is where we're at. Harry Maguire on. Rasmus Hoyland out.
00:29:41Mason Mount for Matthias Cunha.
00:29:49Casemiro for Patrick Dorgu.
00:29:54Luke Shaw in place of Lenny Oro.
00:30:09Mario Obi is coming on, and Manuel Uate has made way.
00:30:14Tyler Fredrickson for Aidan Heaven at centre-back.
00:30:19Jack Fletcher for Kobe Maynou.
00:30:29There may be one more.
00:30:32It looks to me like the only position that hasn't changed is goalkeeper.
00:30:43Chido Obi's an interesting one up top.
00:30:49He got a little bit of time last year when things weren't going well.
00:30:52For Hoyland it was, hey, play the kid, give him a try.
00:30:56So that will actually help him as he progresses and develops his season.
00:31:00So in terms of how they line up, the three centre-backs are now Frederiksen, Maguire and Shaw.
00:31:13Diego Dallo is on as the right wing-back.
00:31:18And Diego LeĂłn, the newly signed Paraguayan, is on instead of Amad Diallo.
00:31:24So LeĂłn will play as the left wing-back.
00:31:27Central midfield, Casemiro and Collier.
00:31:31And then you've got Jack Fletcher and Mason Mount as the two supporting Chido Obi.
00:31:35And this is the other part of it.
00:31:36These players want to impress.
00:31:38It's not like a throwaway 30 minutes.
00:31:40Again, the tempo will be up.
00:31:42They're going to want to impress.
00:31:43Every time you pull that shirt on and play for your manager, you'll want to impress them.
00:31:47And this is an opportunity for a lot of these players.
00:31:49Some of them first-team players, some of them fringe, some of them youngsters.
00:31:53What's it say that the goalkeeper hasn't changed?
00:31:55I mean, if you're going to change the team, why don't you give Tom Heaton 20 minutes?
00:31:58But for the record, Tom Heaton was in the reserves in 2003 when I went to Manchester United.
00:32:04If I see Tom after the game, I'm going to say,
00:32:06what are you doing still playing football?
00:32:08But credit to him.
00:32:09And yeah, I'm guessing he probably won't get much game time.
00:32:12So I'm sure he had won at 30 minutes at least.
00:32:16Well, he was outstanding when he played part of the game against Leeds in Stockholm last week.
00:32:21Several eye-catching saves.
00:32:24Very good goalkeeper for a very long time, as you correctly say.
00:32:27Yes, I say!
00:32:29Three caps for England in the midst of it all.
00:32:31Three West Ham subs on the way.
00:32:32Yeah!
00:32:33Yeah!
00:32:34Yeah!
00:32:35Yeah!
00:32:36Yeah!
00:32:37Yeah!
00:32:38Yeah!
00:32:39Yeah!
00:32:40Yeah!
00:32:41Hey!
00:32:42Hey!

00:33:17Hey!
00:33:18Hey!
00:33:19Hey!
00:33:20Hey!
00:33:21Hey!
00:33:22which goes Maguire.
00:33:25A big share from the Manchester United supporters
00:33:28at Harry Maguire's first serious involvement.
00:33:31And that's good to see because, as you know,
00:33:33he's come through quite a lot as a former Manchester United captain,
00:33:36leader, England international,
00:33:38had a bit of a down spell at Manchester United,
00:33:41went through a few managers, but he's revered by the red side.
00:33:52Here come those three West Ham changes.
00:34:12At centre-back, Mavropanas for Tadebo.
00:34:16In midfield, it's going to be Rodriguez coming off
00:34:19and Freddy Potts coming on.
00:34:21Much most significantly given the reports emerging from the UK last night,
00:34:25Lucas Pakitar.
00:34:28A star turn in this West Ham squad,
00:34:30reports suggesting that he is on the point of being cleared
00:34:34of accusations of spot-fixing,
00:34:36betting charges that have been hanging over his head for the last 15 months.
00:34:41And reliable sources suggest
00:34:44that an announcement will be made on that subject
00:34:47by the Football Association early next week.
00:34:50You can only imagine the relief he's feeling to get rid of that,
00:34:54as you said, hanging over his head.
00:34:55Now he can play his football and do it carefree.
00:34:59Onindo.
00:35:01Cheeto, Obie.
00:35:02Theâ
00:35:07Stress, those are just reports at the moment.
00:35:09There's no official confirmation.
00:35:11mission.
00:35:13So a really good feat there from Cheeto Obie,
00:35:16but this is also what we want to see.
00:35:18Can he get vertical?
00:35:19He's the new left-wing-back, Diego Leone,
00:35:21they own and now Mason Mounts
00:35:25away by Wan-Bissaka
00:35:28boy can Mason Mount do with a real good strong run in the team but really stop
00:35:33start for him due to injury
00:35:51Ward-Crowse
00:36:05Wan-Bissaka
00:36:16the problem there was Wan-Bissaka wanted to go
00:36:19but there was nobody in the box it was only
00:36:21Jared Bowen who would be even possibly make the numbers so it's not as if he
00:36:26could go down the line beat him across because there's no in the box and
00:36:28ultimately you really have to kind of just toy with it a bit
00:36:36see how spread and stretched West Ham are they have zero balance in their
00:36:41midfield got three on this side they've got four on the other side completely
00:36:45vacant in the middle of the park and that just for me is down to tired legs
00:36:52that's Freddie Potts wearing number 32 interesting to see him the second generation of the Potts
00:36:59clan to represent West Ham his dad Steve
00:37:01who
00:37:03in passing a
00:37:05little curiosity was born in
00:37:07Hartford Connecticut
00:37:09played over 500 games for West Ham
00:37:14his son just 21 making his way
00:37:16three first-team appearances
00:37:23it's good I just think for young players like this underground potter he'll get an opportunity how much of an opportunity that's gonna be down to him
00:37:30we can see there he will play in the pocket as a six checks his shoulder quite often
00:37:35does really well there but he's a young player still learning his trade trying to apply his trade here in the Premier League not easy
00:37:48Malik Jouf
00:37:49and
00:37:56Malik Jouf
00:37:59Malik Jouf
00:38:00from Manchester United
00:38:02Malik Jouf
00:38:05Amorim with the identified last seed was being ideally suited to his system
00:38:10and I talked about
00:38:13Jouf
00:38:14here
00:38:15being aggressive and at that point
00:38:17Sucek ran into his space, but some of that is on Malik Jufu as well.
00:38:22Taking the onus and being aggressive and driving at his fullback.
00:38:26That's something he'll learn.
00:38:28He'll learn it, particularly in the Premier League.
00:38:37I also think with the likes of Pakita again,
00:38:40attracting so many players willing to play in the pocket on the half turn,
00:38:44and it'll freeze that back three or back four, which should free up more space.
00:39:00Potts.
00:39:06Avropanos.
00:39:12Maguire to another big cheer.
00:39:14Maguire layoff.
00:39:29Maguire back to Baltai by India.
00:39:36Maguire shows a really perfect example.
00:39:39As you build this squad, he's a really good squad player to have.
00:39:42He understands what it is to be at the club.
00:39:44Doesn't feel like he probably has to play week in, week out.
00:39:47Can fill in, do a job, but also get the manager's point across as one of the senior players.
00:39:53But is he fit for long enough?
00:39:59Hasn't shown to be, but maybe not having to play as often might keep him fit.
00:40:04But you're right, injuries do creep in, and that's a tough part of the game.
00:40:12Tim Howard alongside me, three seasons at Manchester United, 77 appearances.
00:40:22Strangely, never faced West Ham in Manchester United's covers.
00:40:26I appreciate you often kept them at bay for Everton.
00:40:29I was going to say, I played it plenty of times since Everton did not know I didn't play in four games with many years.
00:40:43Didn't have you down as saving a penalty from Mido of West Ham when you were playing for Everton at Goodison one day.
00:40:48And, of course, you ruined Manchester United, your former club's attempt to get to an FA Cup final in 2009.
00:40:55Yeah, I did. It's a really great point. I did.
00:40:57I thought you might want to wax lyrical about that. We'll do it after this free kick.
00:41:01I had a job to do.
00:41:04Ward Prowse standing over the ball.
00:41:06It's going to be an outswinger, but it's going to be on top of them so quickly because, I'll tell you what, he whips it in with Venom.
00:41:14That back six of Manchester United is going to be going back towards their own goal.
00:41:18James Ward Prowse, and Socek getting his head to it.
00:41:31It's a goal kick.
00:41:39Here come some more West Ham substitutes.
00:41:42On the left there, number 68, Preston Fearon.
00:41:45He's replacing Thomas Socek, Fearon, an 18-year-old midfielder, a former Chelsea junior.
00:41:52Number 39 is Andy Irving.
00:41:55The Scottish international who is replacing James Ward Prowse.
00:41:59And we've got number 30, Oli Scarls, the left-back.
00:42:06Nayef again is coming off.
00:42:10And the Brazilian, Luis Guilleme.
00:42:11And Malik Jouf is the player that makes way.
00:42:23So Graham Potter, true to his word, giving 90 minutes to several of his players by the looks of it.
00:42:29Nearly 80 to a number of others.
00:42:31I should explain that the day that Tim was eager to talk about when he broke Manchester United Hearts
00:42:43was the FA Cup semi-final of 2009, and a dramatic penalty shootout that you took a grip of.
00:42:48I must say, playing at Wembley, any time, especially playing against your former team,
00:42:59and the mighty Manchester United is something of epic proportion.
00:43:03And saving Berbatov and Ferdinand penalties.
00:43:06Two big players for sure.
00:43:09I'm interested how Collier fits in here.
00:43:13They think so highly of him as a center midfield player.
00:43:19He gets attracted to the ball.
00:43:20He likes to be on the ball.
00:43:22Does he have enough to play at this level?
00:43:24I think he does, but again, it's going to be about time and opportunity.
00:43:39Sure.
00:43:50McGuire.
00:43:55Dare to remind you, it's only 2-1, which is, you know, the way that the game is going at the pace.
00:44:01You just feel Manchester United have dominated, but it's only 2-1.
00:44:04and your West Ham you still have to try it keep your wits about you search for an equalizer without getting to spread open
00:44:19Dallas
00:44:34in the middle of the game.
00:44:36.
00:44:38.
00:44:40.
00:44:42.
00:44:44.
00:44:48.
00:44:50.
00:44:54.
00:44:56.
00:44:58.
00:45:00.
00:45:02Charles
00:45:27Moments in the Premier League
00:45:32bring down the curtain
00:45:34West Ham's dearly beloved Upton Park
00:45:36back in 2016, the last ever visitors
00:45:40West Ham victorious by the odd goal in five
00:45:42amidst hugely emotional scenes
00:45:46and also one of the most controversial results
00:45:48in Premier League history, the day that West Ham
00:45:50survived relegation
00:45:52avoiding the drop with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford
00:45:54on the final day of the season in
00:45:562007 with a goal by Carlos Tevez
00:45:58in somewhat murky circumstances
00:46:04led to Sheffield United
00:46:06who went down instead
00:46:08raising all sorts of questions
00:46:10I remember playing on the final day and seeing that result
00:46:12just a bit when the ball turns over here
00:46:18I know they have two midfielders
00:46:20two new midfielders
00:46:22Irvin and
00:46:23Fear
00:46:24but they can they can empty the midfield and go press
00:46:26as long as that back line is up they can go hunting for the ball
00:46:28to try and create turnovers
00:46:30because they have good possession now
00:46:32but when the ball turns over they need to figure out a way to get it back
00:46:34Pots
00:46:38Pagetar
00:46:40and here's Luis Guillerme and Bowings free in the middle
00:46:44Luis Guillerme only had eyes for goal
00:46:48well I was certain that took a touch here
00:46:54Pagetar
00:46:55it's a good strike
00:46:56lightning deer had it had it covered
00:46:58I just thought if I'm being honest I thought the cross was on
00:47:02I really thought the cross was on there just to kind of
00:47:06visit across the six-yard box give Bowen an opportunity to slide in
00:47:10that was the better choice but he took the shot on
00:47:12Jared Bowen agrees with you by the way
00:47:14I bet he does
00:47:16well isn't that the site
00:47:18in that live stadium
00:47:20the home of the Jets and the Giants
00:47:24and tonight of the Premier League Summer Series
00:47:26the site of the old Giants Stadium
00:47:30killed
00:47:56really good energy
00:47:58as well just for this final
00:48:00five minutes or so
00:48:04Wan-Bissaka
00:48:06this is McGuire
00:48:08moving with a potentially awkward cross
00:48:10Diego Leo
00:48:12nice mount
00:48:14it was the right thing to do for Bissaka to put the ball in
00:48:16but unfortunately there wasn't a lot of runners in the box
00:48:19there's maybe one or two hanging out at the edge of the box
00:48:21no one getting across the front
00:48:24even if it's sacrificial
00:48:26even if you don't think you're going to get it or you're going to run
00:48:28yourself offside
00:48:30you have to create movement
00:48:32and get across the face of defenders to make them make decisions
00:48:34to West Ham's credit that they're still in there with a chance of salvaging something from this game
00:48:46pack a talk
00:48:48pack a talk
00:48:54yeah me
00:48:56pack a talk
00:48:58roadblock by the name of Harry Maguire
00:49:00good defending by Harry Maguire
00:49:02tell you what
00:49:03lovely idea
00:49:04you can see why packets are special
00:49:06I mean he thinks two steps ahead
00:49:08he sees one defender
00:49:10just gives a little hesitation around the corner
00:49:14and gets himself up once and back again
00:49:16again
00:49:18fear
00:49:32Justin Fehrer.
00:49:37Another pass.
00:49:43Manchester United need to hit the ground running when the Premier League proper gets underway.
00:49:48Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea amongst their opening eight fixtures.
00:49:58Justin Fehrer.
00:50:00Really good. Really, really good from West Ham.
00:50:04Fehrer again involved in the play.
00:50:09Graham Potter likes what he's seen of the 18-year-old. He's caught the eye in training sessions.
00:50:14Yeah, I do too. I do too. He's lively. And just there, really good idea to run over the ball.
00:50:19He wanted Bowen to come to him. In fairness to Bowen, though, he's running socks off.
00:50:22He's running socks off. Game's nearly finished, and I just don't know if he had enough legs there to get to the ball.
00:50:27He probably saw it, but just couldn't quite get there.
00:50:31He probably saw it, but just couldn't quite get there.
00:51:03Max Killman, Irving, Wan-Bissaka, Bowen, it was on as well, it was on, the 1-2, you saw it coming, real good interplay, Wan-Bissaka, Jarrett Bowen just didn't quite come off.
00:51:33So what have you got on your report card as far as West Ham are concerned, having watched them tonight?
00:51:46Well, I think they're short of a few players is what I think.
00:51:50Ultimately, Graham Potter told us this is a work in progress in so many ways.
00:51:56I think they need to sort out defensively with their goalkeeper in terms of some of the decision making.
00:52:00If Graham Potter wants to play a certain way and it's not on, you have to have enough confidence and bravado to not necessarily play out of danger all the time.
00:52:11So they've made their own problems.
00:52:13But ultimately, I think they're just short, maybe one or two, possibly in the midfield.
00:52:18And in terms of goal scorers, I mean, there's talk of a move for free agent Callum Wilson who's come to the end of his deal at Newcastle.
00:52:30Well, full group for me can do the job and I would certainly give him the opportunity.
00:52:34I would like to see Callum Wilson get into the stable because he's a known Premier League goal scorer.
00:52:40He's done it before.
00:52:41And that is such a high commodity that, you know, you can't always count on a striker to play every single minute.
00:52:48And Callum Wilson has showed he can play with a goal scorer.
00:52:52He did it with ESAC at Newcastle.
00:52:54Every time he came off the bench, he was pushing, he was scoring goals.
00:52:57So I'd like the signing if they can get it across the line.
00:53:00And we're going to get five extra minutes here.
00:53:06So a distance to go in this contest.
00:53:22Official Lewis Smith.
00:53:25Two of the up-and-coming Premier League referees officiating here together with...
00:53:30Three of the up-and-coming Premier League soccer.
00:53:34One-and-coming of entertainment in the second half.
00:53:49Mason out to such a good job.
00:53:53Look at his size and stature, but he's always nibbling at the defenders, always causing a problem for them.
00:53:58He's not a back-to-goal player, but when it does require him to be rough-and-tumble, he does such a good job at
00:54:05Making defenders have to work for every ounce
00:54:11Pots combining
00:54:28Oh
00:54:35The arena to another
00:54:39Performing at soldier field in Chicago on Wednesday
00:54:43To the magnificent Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta next Sunday
00:54:58One or two times now she always looking for something that hasn't quite got it
00:55:08He needs to be a little bit stronger in those moments to hold the ball up
00:55:12Wan-Bissaka
00:55:16Andy Irving
00:55:28Yeah
00:55:34Jack Fletcher
00:55:38And now the coach of the under-18s at Old Trafford
00:55:46Play with a young Darren Fletcher
00:55:49So interesting
00:55:50Fletcher's coming through the ranks and had such a great career wonderful teammate
00:55:55And to see his son out there playing is pretty incredible moments
00:55:58It's making you feel extremely old
00:56:05Still West Ham
00:56:07Seeks something and this is Matt Rapanos and it's a good ball and it's Jared Bowen
00:56:19As we said the game is there it's there for West Ham I know it's spread
00:56:23I know it's a little bit slow but this is what you want isn't it
00:56:25Jared Bowen edge of the box on his left foot
00:56:28It's not really quite cut across it as we know he does
00:56:32That could be taken by Altai by India
00:56:38That could be taken by Altai by India
00:56:40West Ham report card what about the Manchester United version well I'm impressed and I'm upbeat
00:57:06I wanted to see for so long last season a blueprint of what Ruben Amaran is trying to do
00:57:13And we're seeing it here, and I think it's mentality. I really really do John
00:57:16There's so many players who wanted out last year who wanted to
00:57:20Be combative with the manager because that's what they've done
00:57:22There's they've seen so many managers that they didn't trust in these processes and and that's what that's what it was gonna take
00:57:29For Ruben Amaran to have success is get players in the door who believed in what they were doing
00:57:34And we see that we see the confidence in these players. I know it's only a snapshot
00:57:38But we see the confidence in these players
00:57:40the desire to want
00:57:42To play a certain brand of football in the first half. I thought I did it did I thought it looked good
00:57:46And we had an idea of that I still think there's more players to come for Manchester United possibly a striker as you mentioned
00:57:52There's a bunch of players who have been told you can get out the door, and I think we'll see them leave so
00:57:58Stay tuned. There's more to come for for Manchester
00:58:00These discussions were taking place in the strange setting of Iceland ten days ago
00:58:07So Jim Ratcliffe
00:58:09Jason Wilcox, Norma Barada, the CEO
00:58:13Discussing possible targets
00:58:15Jim Ratcliffe was on a fly-fishing expedition so they went to join him
00:58:19Not terrible if that's where your boss wants to go for a meeting by all means
00:58:23Manchester United
00:58:29Manchester United protecting their lead
00:58:31And confirming victory in their opening summer series fixture
00:58:37Thanks to a pair of goals
00:58:39In either half from Bruno Fernandes
00:58:41A penalty and a crisp strike from some distance past a static goalkeeper
00:58:47Jared Bowen scored maybe the best goal of the lot
00:58:50Midway through the second half to make it interesting, but it finishes at MetLife Manchester United 2 West Ham United 1
00:58:57So polite handshakes and as you can see Bruno Fernandes is ready to speak to Rebecca Lowe
00:59:12He certainly is Bruno congratulations two goals and a victory in the first game of summer series
00:59:17You personally how did you feel fresh you looked it?
00:59:20No, I felt good trainings training sessions. They've been very very good
00:59:24We have we have been doing very well obviously tough tough ones, but
00:59:29To prepare us ourselves for this kind of game. So
00:59:32It's good obviously to win to win the games even being a friendly
00:59:35We want to get every game to prepare ourselves in the best way and obviously to go into the season in a positive way
00:59:42After 70 minutes obviously there was a lot of changes a lot of substitutions
00:59:45But how do you view overall the two the first 70 and then the last 20 or so overall?
00:59:51The game was good
00:59:51I think we were very good on the ball in some moments. We could have done a longer possessions as the manager was asking us
00:59:58We rush a little bit in the last third to to get our chance to get our goals
01:00:03We have to work on that to be more able to to get into the final third and then play from there
01:00:08But I think overall was a very very good game for him
01:00:11Just one more question
01:00:12We spoke to your manager before the game and he told us that Mateus Cunha is a real character in the dressing room
01:00:17He said he was a shouter tell us a little bit about one of the new players then
01:00:22Obviously we know we know mostly of the brazilians are very people very very loudly very happy, you know
01:00:28So he's one of that. He's a very funny guy
01:00:30He's coming to the group very well. He's settled very quickly with everyone
01:00:36Um, what what is very good because we need him at at his best
01:00:40We need him to create this connection with every player to to get the best out of him
01:00:44But also of the team
01:00:45Thanks for your time bruno congratulations on the goals and the win you are player of the match. Thank you so much
01:00:50Good to see you again. Thank you
01:00:52bruno fernandez talking there warmly about mateus cuĂąa and it strikes me tim howard for season after season
01:00:58You said the last five years and it has been
01:01:01bruno fernandez has been manchester united's main man at times he's almost been their only man if we've learned anything tonight
01:01:07It is that he's going to have a bit more help this season
01:01:09Yeah, and he and as a leader he took on that responsibility
01:01:13But the fact of the matter is you don't get the best out of him when he has to do everything
01:01:18And really what he needs to do is kind of sit behind the ball create tempo
01:01:22He needs those players ahead of him to do that job
01:01:25And I think we're seeing that and we certainly will see that with
01:01:27Brandon bruno to come and cuĂąa
01:01:30I mean, I think I love it
01:01:31I've seen so many clips of him at wolves and you just wonder it's one thing doing it in the wolves dress room
01:01:36But it really speaks to the character is when he gets in a manny night dressing and does that question for you as well
01:01:41Tim in terms of the system the much vaunted amaran system that seemed such an ill fit last year
01:01:4710 of the 11 starters were there last year at manchester united and yet they looked more comfortable in that setup tonight
01:01:55So is that a sign that they've worked on it during the close season during the early weeks of preseason and gradually?
01:02:02The message is getting through yeah, I think they've worked on it
01:02:04They've worked on themselves as well
01:02:06They've had to they've had to figure out are they going to get on board or are they not?
01:02:10And and I think I think some of those players have done that and he talked he talked about the manager wanting longer possessions
01:02:17They were good in possession, but he wants it longer what he means by that is
01:02:20Good teams where ruben amaran wants to get is to get into final third and just camp out and own domination of the ball
01:02:28Well, that's it from us in the booth. We've enjoyed ourselves
01:02:30I hope you've enjoyed our coverage and we can reflect further now by going down pitch side and joining robbie graham and rebecca
01:02:37Thank you john. Thank you tim as we see bruno fernandez taking the applause
01:02:43Thousands of manchester united and west ham fans turning out at metlife stadium this evening in new jersey
01:02:51bruno fernandez such a bright spark last season wasn't he eight goals he got last year
01:03:07Where the match under his arm after this one?
