00:00Sabrina Nighty's show A Halloween Story. Sabrina's aunts sing about Halloween, which at least means
00:07they're having fun, but it's kind of lame to watch. I guess they like it just because that's
00:11what a mortal would expect to be the favorite holiday of witches. More of a meta-logic thing
00:16than real logic. They point to make the pumpkins glow, and they care more about the holiday than
00:22Sabrina. Zelda puts her hands on Sabrina's shoulder, and Sabrina's lazy costume alone
00:29gets her aunts to shapeshift her into an old lady. Well, that's horrifying for her. She
00:35gets to tell them they've gone too far. If witches can't get rid of cellulite, how did
00:41they return Sabrina back to her skinny herself? Same goes for the adult fat baby getting returned
00:48to baby form. Harvey gave Sabrina an invitation to a party, and since Sabrina's aunts take
00:55Halloween too seriously, Libby steals her offered role to set up the party. Zelda says that what
01:01Halloween is really about is remembering the dead, and Sabrina's the audience surrogate.
01:07And Hilda says she doesn't want to go to the Halloween family reunion, because she doesn't
01:12like her whole family. But Zelda forces her to go because it's tradition. Why would she
01:18sing about Halloween then? Sabrina goes from saying in blatant denial that her aunts can't
01:24make her go to the party to being surprised when Salem says that the aunts won't let her
01:28do what she wants. They're witches. Of course she couldn't. He tells her that she could make
01:35a clone of herself, but then he says her aunts would spot the switch if she had her double
01:39go with them. Then why did he even bring it up? Somehow Sabrina still decides to use the spell
01:47anyways. But what's the point if she didn't want to go to the Halloween reunion, and this isn't
01:53going to get her out of it. So she wouldn't bother. Isn't it a little demeaning to Sabrina's
02:01intelligence as the main character that she has to get ideas to start the plot from Salem,
02:08which wasn't the case in the source material? At least it takes some of the responsibility
02:13off her when she abuses her powers. That would have been nice to keep Sabrina in the 70s comic
02:20from being a little inconsistent with her goody two-shoes self. Somehow the doubles can only
02:26say three measly sentences. I have to assume that this was a spell put on by the Witches'
02:32Council to prevent the presence of doubles from ruining society. Sabrina should be able
02:37to predict that giving her double the line, I'd love to, and the line, that is so true,
02:42would cause her to say those in the wrong situations and cause herself to get embarrassed. What a terribly
02:48written episode this will be. Hilda's double gets figured out immediately, and because Sabrina
02:54wants to go to a fancy party with casual clothes, she gets given a dress she doesn't even like
02:59because her aunt's not up to date on the latest fashion, and so she just picked the dress Sabrina's
03:05granny light. Zelda somehow asks if she's the only one looking forward to this. She's completely
03:12unlikable in this episode. In the previous one, she was a compassionate one, and now she's an
03:17unlikable monster trying to force her family to go with her for no reason so she could go to a
03:23social event that only she wants to be at without embarrassment. This role would have been better
03:28suited by Hilda. She's been evil since the pilot. It's compassionate of Sabrina's great aunt to ask
03:36her if she's okay with the fact that she has to live with her aunts. There's a lot of pointless
03:40boredom. Sabrina complains that she can't believe she has to sit at the kiddie table. I can't either.
03:48Salem sits in front of another talking cat who is female, and because of the stupid rule, Sabrina has
03:54to sit in front of an evil little witch who shrinks everyone she hates and puts them in
03:58jars because it's the kid table. And yet Sabrina takes the risk of calling her a brat and telling
04:04her how her aunts raise her better, while her cowardly parents let her use magic as much as
04:10she wants even though she shrunk her math teacher and kidnapped him. Instead of tricking her into
04:16dumping all of her magic in a jar, saying that they'll give her a chocolate bar if she doesn't,
04:22and that they'll let her get her powers back immediately afterwards. Maybe they don't know about
04:26what she's doing. Still, you'd think all powerful witches would send such a bratty kid away to have
04:32their powers taken away temporarily. You'd think witches would have reformed schools. As for why
04:38she knows about her powers when she's not 16 yet, it's easy to assume that the writers want you to
04:44think only half witches have to wait until they're 16, because it's a racist rule, or they're half as
04:51powerful. However that works, there's no proof that they don't have abilities that other witches do.
04:58Sabrina doesn't save the math teacher because a brat would get into a magic fight with her for it in
05:03front of everyone, I assume. And she thinks she'd be punished by her aunts for that, so she's just
05:08selfish. She could have saved him by freezing this girl in time and warping him to her home and ask him
05:14where his home is before sending him there. She could also erase Amanda's memory of this, so she's just too
05:19stupid to think of that to get away with it. And she doesn't explain why she isn't gonna do this, so she
05:25just looks out of character. I can understand a teenager is new to magic being too panicked to think
05:31about this. Libby kept being annoyed at the clone following her around and being a goody two-shoes for
05:37smiling so much. Finally, she starts to explain part of why she hates her. She says she would like her more if
05:45she insulted people more. So she wants her to be like her and feels bad about herself because she
05:50isn't. Later, the brat shows her mother, Sabrina, in a jar because she was impossibly stupid enough to
05:57not color with her, and somehow she just says that's so cute. As for why Sabrina didn't get out of it,
06:05Amanda's later episode has her disable the magic of another witch for a while by shapeshifting her.
06:10So, it turns out the Witch's Council are too careless to think they should make magic disabling
06:15impossible for most. I mean, a kid could save herself from her abusive parent that way. I guess
06:23the Witch's Council office that they all sit together at is enchanted against that exact spell.
06:30I guess the reason the ants don't stand up for her with magic is that they're afraid that if she gets
06:34out right away, she'll just put her back in, or worse. And they don't want to cause a fuss and get
06:40kicked out of the party from a magic fight. I wish the story would explain that the reason she's
06:45fine with Sabrina being put in a jar is that she knows Sabrina is a half a witch, so she doesn't
06:50care. It'd be annoying, but at least I'd know the answer. Libby says that since the party's so
06:56lifeless for no reason, she says someone should streak. And to her credit, she wasn't trying to
07:02talk Sabrina into it, and was actually surprised and impressed that she said she'd love to. It's
07:09still evil of her to encourage her after she had enjoyed having her listen to her the whole party.
07:14And it shows us the softer side of her that she was actually willing to enjoy her company by
07:19talking to her a lot. We got to see a side of her that wasn't just being mean to Sabrina.
07:26It makes it all the more confusing that she bullies her then. So what, she's only bullying her
07:31because she doesn't want to walk at her side and listen to her gossip about people? Or whatever
07:36she was talking about? That's kind of weird that she just punishes her for not wanting her full
07:41attention. Harvey of course tries to talk her out of it, and somehow the double stammers I as if she's
07:48trying to say multiple pre-programmed sentences at a time. You'd think that kind of bug would be
07:53ironed out after thousands of years. I guess it's in response to her detecting requests and an opinion
07:59at the same time. I guess the reason this happens is the witch's council cursed the double spell to be
08:05like this so that doubles couldn't actually be abused, making the spell so useless and incompetent
08:12it wouldn't still be in the spell books. Zelda reveals she's the one who got Sabrina out of the jar.
08:19And at least the brat hugs her mom. Sabrina gets an expensive gift certificate for talking to someone
08:25dead. Somehow she doesn't immediately understand what a reanimation is for, and she's told she has
08:32to do this tonight because the gap between the living and the dead is weakest on old Hallow's Eve.
08:38That justifies why witches like Halloween so much. Somehow she at first considers talking to a dead
08:45celebrity, before getting the idea to talk to her grandma. I'm glad Zelda insisted on leaving because
08:51this is her own personal private moment. So the grandma hugs Sabrina and says she missed her and
08:57holds her hands, compliments her dress, and hugs her again. That's overwhelmingly heartwarming.
09:03The two aunts give each other the same gift, and Zelda explains that they've been living together
09:07way too long. It turns out one of the family members is drunk. Not that we get to see or hear it,
09:14because that would have made the family reunion more interesting. You could have had this be a whole
09:20plot. The brat's mom who was mocking the aunts for being single the whole time is being divorced.
09:27That's a little cathartic. The grandma says she's the prettiest girl in the world, and smart too.
09:33Sabrina tells her she's a witch, and she pauses with barely an emotional reaction and says,
09:39well dear, as long as you're happy. It's so mature of her. I say that because her saying as long as
09:46means that she isn't comfortable with it, but she doesn't let that tempt her into hurting her feelings.
09:52I don't know why she was surprised that Sabrina's a witch. How else would she have been reanimated and
09:58immediately had Sabrina there to visit her? Did she think mortals were allowed to do that just to be
10:03nice? The only reason she would question would be that in Sabrina's version of the afterlife,
10:08everyone gets told about witches right away, just so they won't be freaked out when a reanimation is
10:15bought for them. If they only found out about them right after a reanimation was picked for them,
10:20her grandma would have been worried instead of in a good mood right away. It's satisfying that the
10:25aunts get revenge on the woman who kept shaming them for being single. They say what she has to look
10:31forward to and make her cry and are happy about it, because Zelda's not perfect. The brat demands something
10:37she could zap up from her clearly crying mom. I guess she doesn't want to waste her limited amount
10:43of magic, and she doesn't care about her crying because she doesn't respect her for being a dormant.
10:49It's satisfying to see the brat get put in a jar and told,
10:52I think someone needs to time out. As for why I didn't compliment the woman insulting Zelda,
11:00I guess it's because her insults were so tame that it didn't feel like enough karma for Zelda
11:06forcing her family to go to the reunion. Slight embarrassment isn't really enough considering
11:11what Sabrina goes through. Sabrina goes to the party with a mask, and the clone streaks,
11:17making people thankfully cheer, being nothing but happy and not seeming to disapprove of her at all,
11:23which is heartwarming. And we can see that they don't actually see her face because she's from the
11:28side. Cleverly, Sabrina spreads a rumor that Libby streaked. While Libby's offended at being told not to
11:36pretend she wasn't streaking, nobody's actually mean to her about it, looking genuinely happy the whole
11:41time. This explains why she won't get bullied for it. It also gives a mixed, confused message about
11:48streaking. Because it makes Harvey look paranoid and old-fashioned for giving out the warning that
11:53Sabrina would be bullied for the rest of her time in school for it. It doesn't give out an explanation
11:58to convince anyone who didn't already agree with him or were easily convinced that he was wrong that
12:03they shouldn't streak at a party just in case. So I feel like that's an irresponsible message,
12:09unless reality really is as nice as it's depicted here, where as long as they're good looking it's
12:13fine. If Libby's like, don't be so immature for even considering that she would streak, then why
12:20did she say that someone should streak to liven up the party, as if she liked that it happens? And
12:28Sabrina agrees to help Harvey clean up at the party, being nice as usual. Her sending the devil
12:34to the party wouldn't have been confusing if Libby wasn't ready to agree to help set up the party.
12:39Then she could have had a reason to send the devil to the party, because she would have sent the devil
12:45to the party to say, I'd love to, and agree to help set up the party. The story ends with Sabrina telling
12:52the audience in a fourth wall break that the real meaning of Halloween is about spending time with
12:56your family, which kids never do on that day, and never will anyways, and is somehow not about costumes
13:03and candy. That looks like it's promoting a long abandoned version of the holiday, and while its
13:08heart's in the right place, it's probably not achieved what it wanted. I guess the reason they broke the
13:14fourth wall is that they knew the family reunion being so miserable sent the message that you shouldn't
13:18goaded them and should avoid spending time with their family, and that blind adherence to a horrible
13:23tradition sucks. So the executives who were all conservatives stepped in to deliver the opposite
13:28message, which no one is going to learn because the writers told a whole story about contradicting it.
13:34Either that or the writer was so incompetent that he realized that he told the opposite message he
13:39wanted by complete accident, but that's hard to believe, because it looks like two completely
13:45different ideologies are opposed to each other. This story by Nell Scovell was a tedious one about
13:51Sabrina and her aunt suffering through a family reunion out of sheer blind tradition that's
13:56miserable for them, because the great aunt does nothing but bully the aunts for being single.
14:02And somehow, despite her being omnipotent, it took forever for her to be a proper parent to her
14:06evil daughter. Somehow she just thought her magic abuse was cute, and it's never explained why.
14:12I guess the reason she always got away with it was she did it to mortals, because witches would be
14:18able to go after her for it properly, and maybe her mom didn't know she was doing it to mortals.
14:25It should have just explained that they would be magically punished if they didn't go to the family
14:29reunion. The subplot was about me having to see Livy enjoy being with the clone of Sabrina that only
14:35says three lines and is super agreeable. There's absolutely no reason Sabrina would have bothered
14:42sending a double to the party, since Livy said in front of her that she was going to set up the party,
14:48so either way, she's going to get time with Harvey anyways, let alone one that could only say a few
14:54lines that would have obviously backfired on her. It's bad enough I have to make up a headcanon to explain
15:01where the double spell is this way when no witch would picture it like that. This whole story was
15:06frustrating to watch because it's all just idiot plots. Zelda's a massive idiot for thinking it was
15:12worth it to keep going to a party she should know will just be subjecting herself to mockery for
15:17being single from apparently the only person who talks to her there anyways. It doesn't look like the
15:22great aunt has the dinner to magically punish her for not going when she won't even punish her own
15:27daughter, and so nobody would miss her if she didn't go. All because she's so old she wants to
15:33follow tradition. I guess the reason she doesn't zap up a fake boyfriend is that they can't zap up one
15:39with magic because that'd be creating magic, and they'd ask him to demonstrate eventually, if only in
15:45case she's lying, so she'd still be scrutinized for apparently bringing a mortal here anyways. Maybe she
15:53tried that and it didn't work out. It's also just evil of somebody to force her family to go along
15:58with something they hate just for her own selfish desires that she knows herself destructive anyways
16:04because morality is about unselfishness and compassion for as many people as possible except
16:09to humor their bigotry and unfairness. It should have been Hilda dragging them to the reunion. It should
16:15have been that woman dragging them to the reunion. And it should have been to go to chat with people she
16:21really likes. Instead it ends up being a whole story about how family reunions can be bad,
16:26and forcing yourself to adhere to traditions you hate or that are evil or bad, and so it's being
16:32lean into your bratty kid if you live in a place where you're allowed to punish them and have no
16:36reason to fear them. That's all common sense anyways to everyone who was raised in a good environment
16:41their whole childhood. And anyone who wasn't usually doesn't get convinced to change their minds from
16:46tv shows because they know everything happening in them only happens because the writer wanted to.
16:52So what was the point of the story existing for the audience? Was it for the writer to rant about
16:59how awful his family reunions are? It's not a very well written message about peer pressure being bad
17:06because it does it with one of the most common sense things besides hard drugs and people approved of
17:11Livy and never go on to bully her, so Sabrina might have had no consequences to streaking after all.
17:17Although I didn't think about that the last two times I saw this episode because it did such a good
17:21job making us scared of the consequences of it. So that's harmless.
