'Could Not Be More Proud': Army Secretary Praises Soldiers Who Subdued Alleged Fort Stewart Shooter

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll held a press briefing on Thursday, where he spoke about the soldiers who subdued the alleged Fort Stewart shooter.

00:00General Lewis, this is Priya Schreeder with NBC News.

00:03I know you guys are prepared for scenarios like this when you go to war zones or on combat deployments,

00:10but have you gotten an opportunity to speak to some of the soldiers in this unit

00:14about how they're processing that this attack occurred from one of their own,

00:19and how are you processing that as a leader?

00:22Yeah, I think we train for this on the battlefield, and it's a different situation

00:26where it happens on an installation for one of your own.

00:29So I think over the upcoming days and weeks, as the Secretary said,

00:33people are in on processes and work through this at different rates,

00:36and we know we've got to keep a very close eye on them, we've got a great community here,

00:41a great response, as we saw from all the folks the Secretary recognized this morning,

00:46the support from the local community, just amazing.

00:50So we feel that this demonstrates that we trained internally for the worst-case scenario,

00:55and our doctors and our medics and our soldiers have responded exactly as we trained to do,

01:00and now our job is to make sure they can care for the state of the world in this thing.

01:04And I just want to recognize that behind you, right,

01:07these are the six soldiers which we were able to recognize today,

01:11and they, I mean, this is sincerely as soon as possible.

01:16I and the administration of President Trump did not be more proud of them.

01:21They are everything that is good about this nation.

01:24They are the best among us in our country.

01:26They are the best among us in the Army.

01:29They acted in a way that I think all of us hoped we would under fire, but they did.

01:33And so we are just so incredibly proud of them.

01:37We are so grateful for them.

01:38And one of the things we told them and their colleagues is that we will stand with them

01:43as long as we need to to get them back where they need to be.
