During a town hall meeting, gubernatorial candidate Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) spoke about investigations into murders in South Carolina.
Transcript
00:00I recently went to Loras. Who's been to Loras? And I met with the Spivey family.
00:07And as I walked into the room at the Veterans Cafe and Museum tonight, I read a statement from the Attorney General of South Carolina,
00:19who is refusing to investigate the death and the killing of Scott Spivey.
00:26And there are tapes. We know that he was chased nine miles down the road.
00:31And there are tape recordings about the guy that shot him bragging about how terrified Scott Spivey was before he died.
00:40We've seen video. We've seen body cam where it was handwritten on a note that said, act like a victim.
00:49A note that was snuck to the shooter.
00:51And you can't tell me for a man who was shot 17 times from behind and killed by a bullet in the back that our Attorney General could not investigate this case.
01:08He has refused.
01:10Boo. That's right. Boo.
01:12Boo. We had a solicitor. This is in the Sumter County Judicial Area.
01:18Two weeks ago. Prosecuted one case of DUI.
01:23Do you know how many murder cases are in Sumter County today?
01:27Over 60.
01:29If you roll down two hours down the road, south to Charleston, you don't want to spend your money in Myrtle Beach.
01:35You come down to Charleston and we take your money.
01:38We cash all the checks.
01:40Two miles down the road, two hours down the road in Charleston County.
01:44Guess how many murder cases are on the docket in not being prosecuted?
01:50Over 350 murder cases and attempted murder over the last seven to eight years.
01:58We don't have trials anymore.
02:00We don't have juries and we don't have prosecutions.
02:04And you know why?
02:05Because the system is corrupt.
02:07We're only one of two states in the country that allow our lawyer legislators to pick the judges in this state.
02:16And then we have an Attorney General who runs for office.
02:19And do you know who funds his political campaigns for office?
02:23The lawyers who have cases before the Attorney General and his prosecutors.
02:29And then we have solicitors who are supposed to prosecute murder, who are supposed to prosecute child molesters, who are supposed to prosecute rapists.
02:41And they're elected.
02:43And do you know who funds their campaigns?
02:46The lawyers who have cases against the prosecutors.
02:51Now someone tell me how that smells right.
02:54It doesn't.
02:54And that's why we have cases like Scott Spivey up here in the PD not being investigated, not being prosecuted.
03:04That's why we have hundreds of cases across the state not being investigated.
03:08Well, on day one, you know who's going to bring law and order to South Carolina?
03:13I, for damn sure, am bringing law and order to South Carolina.
03:17I, for damn sure, am bringing law and order to South Carolina.
03:19I, for damn sure, am bringing law and order to South Carolina.
