00:00Right now my next guest was once part of one of the most successful girl groups of all time the Spice Girls
00:07She's gone on to have a solo career in her own name recording two number one hits and she's recently released her seventh album
00:15Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mel C
00:17We don't have much time such as the nature of a of a live show, but you are going to sing for us tonight
00:33I am very excited. I basically wanted to know is life better out of the big group now
00:40Into what you're doing for yourself or or is it the same? Do you know what? I think at this time in my life
00:45It's better. Of course everything I did with the Spice Girls was amazing
00:49But I think it's very much a young person's game
00:51You know we had no responsibilities you would go down the world our lives weren't our own
00:56But I have a family now so being able to do things my way
01:00We saw the pressure that one direction work where under and we got a sense of that pressure
01:04So were you under that pressure wasn't a happy time in the group that you know, it was incredible
01:09It was fairy tale, but there's a dark side there really is
01:11What's the dark side of it earning millions?
01:13Haha, well, you know obviously that is one of the wonderful things, but you're away from home
01:17You're away from your family. You're reading of people's opinions about you
01:21Which we all do these days because of social media, but back then
01:24Come on, you don't surely you're bigger than that when you're in one of the most powerful groups in the world
01:31You know you don't read Twitter and Facebook and care do you?
01:34Well, that's why I feel for bands like One Direction now because there's no escape
01:37But at least it was only the tabloids who were being nasty about us then but we were young and you know
01:43You have this dream to be a pop star, but we're in our early 20s
01:46We didn't really know who we were so it it can be quite confusing
01:49What's life like now it's I think it's pretty normal. I'd like to think so I've got a little girl
01:55She's incredible so I love to do the school run and have a really normal life with her
01:59But I still have the opportunity to do my music and play live
02:03I'm back on the 12th of April playing Mandela Hall yeah here and I'm down in Dublin on the 13th at Vicar Street
02:08So it's just wonderful to still be making music still going out playing live best of both worlds
02:14Oh my goodness if you think of the some of the people you've met you know Nelson Mandela being one of them, right?
02:19Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, that was incredible. I think that was one compare that to picking your kid up the school run
02:25Well, how wonderful to be able to do both. Yeah, you know, that's a lovely thing to say
02:30Actually, and you're coming to Belfast tell me about this new album. Yes, the new album. It's quite different for me
02:36It's more electronic than anything I've done in the past still very much a pop record
02:40And I think my voice is something which is familiar to lots of people, but it's been nice to do something new
02:45It feels like a new chapter very fresh sound. Well, look, this is a lovely song that you're gonna sing for us tonight
02:51It's ending our our series. So why don't you go and get ready? I will. Thank you very much
02:56Thanks for coming Mel. All right, listen very very excited to have a an opportunity to say thanks to you
03:03And I mean that for watching the series and all of the series that we've done over the years
03:08We will of course be back in the in the autumn
03:12But we're back tomorrow morning as well. We're not going anywhere
03:14Television might be off for a little while, but here's the biggest show in the country back tomorrow morning at nine o'clock
03:21It's 9 a.m. It's the Nolan show on BBC Radio Ulster with a big show today
03:30Let's see who's online one if they want to live and you know to change them they have to uphold our laws
03:36We're gonna have to tell me what you mean by that. I'm incensed by what you have said
03:41So you took the dirt that he's going on and you smeared it over his car
03:45Yeah, and of course the role of the program is to give you at home a chance to have your say
03:49But you've got to pinch yourself this morning
03:51Don't you when you think that Northern Ireland's knowing national news because of a cake?
03:56Whatever you think said on the Nolan show Monday to Friday at 9 on BBC Radio Ulster
04:02And we'll see you on the radio tomorrow morning at 9. That's it for tonight
04:06And as it was said indeed for this series of Nolan live. Thank you for joining us
