00:30Okay, camera's all good, yeah, recording at the back, excellent.
00:44We've got England captain Ben Stokes, we're going to go to James Colbert.
00:48Ben, a dramatic finish too, an incredible series.
00:51How do you sum it all up and your emotions at the end there?
00:54Yeah, like, I think the series as a whole, even before this game, it was just all four games going to five days, this one again.
01:06And, yeah, it's been, you know, toe-to-toe pretty much, well, for 25 days.
01:14You know, two teams, two very good teams who have, you know, thrown everything at each other, left nothing out there.
01:22You know, so I guess from a cricket fan's point of view, you sort of go to toe-toe is probably fair.
01:30Obviously, we're disappointed now to have not got the result that we wanted to give us a series win.
01:37So there's obviously that, you know, disappointment, a little bit of frustration there as well from everyone.
01:41But, yeah, I think, you know, as a massive advocate of this format and Test Cricket as a whole,
01:51this has certainly been one of those series that can hopefully keep that narrative around Test Cricket as dying.
01:59And so, yeah, disappointed from a, obviously, a playing point of view,
02:04but as an advocate of the game, this series has been fantastic to be a part of.
02:08And with Root and Brook batting yesterday, did you think you were going to get over the line?
02:12And what did you make of the nature of Brook's dismissal?
02:16Yeah, look, obviously, 380.
02:20It was obviously a, you know, very large total to try and chase down.
02:26But as the game got deeper and deeper, the way that the wicket was playing completely changed from days one and days two.
02:34So we knew that if, you know, any of our lads were to get in, then, you know, that was going to give us a good chance.
02:43Harry got us into that position by playing in a particular way,
02:46putting the Indian bowlers under immense pressure to take them away from being able to consistently bowl the areas that they wanted to bowl.
02:57I'm sure everyone was applauding him when he when he brought up his hundred in the way that he did.
03:03Some of the shots he played were unbelievable.
03:06So, yeah, the dismissal and the way that he got out was a shot that we've seen a lot of him do in that innings,
03:15which I'm sure was getting a lot of praise.
03:16Do you feel a stronger team off the back of this series as you look ahead to the Ashes?
03:25Have there been lessons, key lessons learned across this series from your point of view?
03:31No, I think we were in a nice, strong place coming into the series.
03:35I think from a team point of view, and certainly as an individual point of view,
03:42some guys will leave the series, you know, found out a lot more about themselves.
03:49You know, in particular this game, you know, with Chris Wokes going down early on with that unfortunate shoulder injury,
03:56then the responsibility and that fell on Gus' tonguey and Jamie's shoulders.
04:03You know, not only that, but obviously the roles completely changed by then as to why they were selected
04:09and the impact that we thought they would have on the game.
04:12They had to dig deep, in particular in our second innings of bowling.
04:17So, look, I think there's a couple of guys who've left the series when they've been given the opportunities
04:21that they found out a lot more about themselves in a very, very positive way.
04:24And on Chris Wokes, you mentioned his bravery.
04:27A word on that and also his chances of getting fit again in time for the winter in the Ashes.
04:34Yeah, unbelievable, but, like, it was never going to be a question, I think, for him to go out there.
04:42Obviously, he's in a lot of discomfort even running between the wickets there,
04:46but we've had guys go out, you know, Rishabh going out and batting with a broken foot.
04:51We've had Bash going out there bowling and batting and fielding with a broken finger.
04:55And then we've had Chris go out there today and try and get his team over the line
04:58with a quite recently dislocated shoulder.
05:01So, yeah, look, again, that just goes back to how much energy and effort's been put into the series by both teams.
05:08Yeah, everyone's left a lot out on the grounds for the countries of the series, definitely.
05:13Any chances of the Ashes, sorry?
05:15I think he's still been waiting to see a specialist.
05:19Obviously, you don't get that chance when, you know, a game's going on, so, you know, that won't be known till later.
05:25Rory, go ahead.
05:26Obviously, you've said a few times this summer, it's been eyes on this series this summer, not the Ashes.
05:32Do you think with the rivalry that has emerged between these two groups of players and some of the moments we've seen,
05:38is this, is England-India as big as the Ashes now and going forward, do you think it'll be seen that way?
05:45Oh, I think it's always been, you know, a very big rivalry, India-England.
05:51It obviously just doesn't have that Ashes attachment to it.
05:54But, no, this series has always been big.
05:58I don't think that will change.
05:59And just how have you, I know you've had a few matches last year, same,
06:02but how have you felt this week seeing such a nerve-wracking game and sort of having to sit up there and watch
06:10rather than do your thing and get involved?
06:13Yeah, watching when you can't participate or do anything about it is obviously a lot different.
06:19You know, you sit there and you're always in the back of your mind and go,
06:25I wonder if I could have done anything, but, you know, I obviously can't because I wasn't out there.
06:31So, yeah, it's obviously a different point of view, different perspective from not being able to be out there.
06:35Yeah, I thought the lads, you know, not only that, but with Wokes' injuries as well,
06:42the way that they had to, you know, adapt to that, you know, situation, which happened in, what,
06:49I don't know, half a second for a shoulder to pop out, everything just completely changed for us there.
06:53So, the way that they reacted and bounced back to that, I thought, was outstanding.
06:57Will, and then we'll go to Red Sports here at the front.
06:59Go ahead, Will.
07:00Ben, given how much it needs to change to you in your team when you sit out,
07:04are you worried that your team are too reliant on you, if you know what I mean,
07:08especially given the heights you managed to get back to with the ball this summer?
07:11No.
07:11OK, and are you, do you have any reflections on Jacob this summer and how, kind of,
07:18he just came into this game quite late, having not played much cricket.
07:21Do you, kind of, do you wish you'd been able to get a bit more cricket into him,
07:25give him more chance to be kind of up to speed straight away?
07:29Well, I think it's an easy thing to say on reflection.
07:34And, you know, we don't live in a perfect world where everything falls into place.
07:38You know, he's been a member of our squad for this whole series.
07:43And, you know, through, I didn't know I was going to get injured.
07:47So, what are you going to do?
07:52Ben, you yourself have, has produced some intense and relentless moments with the ball on the field.
07:58A word on Mohamed Siraj because he played all the five tests, bowled more than 180 overs.
08:03A word as an opposition captain or as an opposition.
08:06A word on Siraj and what it takes to do what he has done in this series.
08:10I've always had great respect and admiration for Mohamed Siraj as a competitor.
08:17Yeah, like, he just kept, just keeps coming and coming and coming.
08:22You know that he's always going to be in the fight with you.
08:24But, yeah, again, just another example of, you know, what it means.
08:31And, yeah, this game in particular, like, just kept going and going and going.
08:35And, like, yeah, just, you know, oppositions and all that kind of stuff.
08:42I've always had a lot of admiration and respect for the way that Mohamed Siraj goes about his cricket
08:46and what he does and how he takes it on.
08:50So, yeah, like, fair play to him.
08:52So, our left will go with Stefan and then Mel.
08:54Go ahead, Stefan.
08:56Do you know any further what you'll be doing over the next few weeks?
08:58Is it literally just doing nothing to get that shoulder fixed?
09:02Is there anything specific, you know, you have to do to get right for the first?
09:08You'll see me knocking about the hundred, not in a playing way.
09:13I obviously had to make a decision back in January if I was going to participate in the comp,
09:17but I had to make that, like, three days after my hamstring surgery
09:20when I was sat in a brace on my sofa.
09:22So, I was like, nah, probably not going to play.
09:24But, yeah, you know, I said I'd still like to somehow be a part of it.
09:28And so, yeah, I'll be milling about a bit there.
09:32I won't have a notebook or pen like some other people might.
09:36But, yeah, I said that I'll come and give my time to the team then.
09:41So, I'll be, yeah, cracking up my rehab and, yeah, milling about there.
09:46Is that just, like, supportive role for the Superchargers for Andrew Flintoff and Harry?
09:50Yeah, pretty much.
09:52And during your last period of rehab at the start of the year,
09:55I think you were able to sort of go away and give quite a lot of thought
09:58to the way you wanted the team to go this summer.
10:01And you've always said to us, look, you're just looking at this series.
10:04You'll wonder about the Ashes later.
10:06Now the Ashes is your next test match in this period.
10:09How much thought would you give to that?
10:11And how easy is it to keep out the outside noise that might be coming from down under?
10:17Yeah, look, we've got some lads of members of this team
10:20who've got some other responsibilities to fulfil with the 100 coming up
10:25and then the couple of one-day series we've got before that.
10:29For me, obviously, you know, I don't have to concentrate on that.
10:34So, yeah, look, we've got, what is it, November, I think,
10:36or something like that, we fly out there.
10:38So, we've got a lot of time between now and then
10:40to build on all the kind of stuff that we've been speaking about
10:44before the series started.
10:45So, one each going forward, we'll go Mel, Chris and Mike.
10:50Go ahead.
10:51If I've got one, I'm going to sneak in two as I ask it then.
10:55First of all, I just wanted to ask,
10:57was there anything, any specific conversation or word said
11:00between you and Chris Wokes before or after he went out?
11:03And the other part is, would you like to see Jacob Bethel
11:06batting at number three for Warwickshire in the games,
11:09bearing in mind the white balls stuff that's coming,
11:12but in the championship games?
11:13Oh, before Wiz went out, I was in the dressing room.
11:20So, I didn't get a chance to give him a tap on the back
11:22and say, go well.
11:23But I think, you know, obviously coming off there,
11:26it's pretty obvious what would have been said to him there.
11:28Just great effort.
11:30Like, unbelievable.
11:31He just shrugged his shoulder and was like,
11:36I wouldn't do anything else.
11:40And, what was it?
11:41About Jacob Bethel, would you like to see him
11:44batting at number three for Warwickshire in the championship
11:46in the game now?
11:48It would be good to see Beth playing for Warwickshire.
11:51Chris, Mike, one each.
11:52Dave at the back.
11:54No reps to finish.
11:55Ben, as disappointed you are not to go over the line today,
11:58I guess you must be immensely proud of the players
12:00for getting back into this test against all the odds.
12:04Just wondered how you felt the character shown by the team this week
12:07will stand you in good stead for Australia.
12:10How do you see that?
12:13Yeah, and going back to the Wokes injury,
12:17you know, I know that it looks like, oh, we're only a bowler down.
12:19But, you know, when you look into it deeper,
12:23the role of, you know, in particular,
12:27Tungy and Jamie changed from that point onwards.
12:32The way in which, you know, they would have been used changed.
12:35But they took that responsibility on
12:39without adding pressure to themselves.
12:42I think they did that in a way of probably pride, actually,
12:46that, you know, one of the boys has gone down
12:49and, you know, we're going to have to take up that workload,
12:52which, you know, I think some people would probably shy away from that
12:56and be a bit worried about what that means for them.
12:58But, you know, obviously with how that wicket played,
13:02it was evident from both teams of how much team was bowled
13:05that that was going to be the threat.
13:07So, yeah, the workload that those guys had to go through
13:11to make up for the unfortunate injury to Wokesy,
13:14I thought they did an exceptional job.
13:17Showed a lot of courage, showed a lot of heart
13:19and just kept coming in.
13:22So, yeah, look, they can be incredibly proud
13:24of the way that they threw themselves into that
13:26and in particular when the fact that quite a lot had changed
13:29for the roles that they were selected for.
13:34Ben, as an attack, you were detained in the field
13:37for more than 1,000 overs over this series.
13:41Are you confident you'll have just a little bit more cutting edge
13:44in the ashes?
13:46Because it's a great credit to you
13:47that the bowlers kept running in, as you say,
13:49but 1,000 overs is a lot of work.
13:52Good teams bowled a lot.
13:55Better teams bowl a bit less, don't they?
13:56Well done, mate.
13:58And can I just ask about six-drop catches in the match
14:03when one innings, in fact, ultimately,
14:05was that perhaps the most costly factor over the five days
14:09when you look at the ebb and flow?
14:11Yeah, I think you can always look back on, you know,
14:15six chances is obviously a lot
14:17and, you know, if we do take those,
14:24maybe we're chasing, well,
14:26probably would be chasing something smaller than that.
14:29But, yeah, you can go over so many moments
14:35in a five-day test match
14:36and all the times that you spend out in the field
14:38and say if this had been slightly different,
14:41we could have been in, you know,
14:43a slightly different situation sat here talking to you guys.
14:45And no one means to drop catches, obviously,
14:49but, you know, I think if we look back on that,
14:52yeah, you could say that, you know,
14:54those chances that we did put down,
14:57you know, did cost us.
15:00Look back to Head and Lee
15:01when we chased down those runs.
15:03India dropped quite a few chances of us
15:05and, you know, that probably contributed to us,
15:07towards us winning.
15:09So, yeah, maybe if we, you know,
15:11did hold on to those chances,
15:12things could have been a little bit different,
15:13but no one means to drop catches,
15:16drop catches as part of the game.
15:20So, yeah.
15:22Dave at the back, go ahead.
15:23Ben, for the sort of more casual cricket,
15:26what you're really being glued to the action today,
15:28they'll be thinking,
15:29why on earth is this bloke coming out to bat with one arm?
15:32I know you're opposed to substitutes,
15:33but can you put the argument against it
15:35as it's just about the fact that you think it will be abused?
15:39Yeah, I just,
15:41I don't,
15:42I just don't see it
15:44being a thing like,
15:46sorry about this,
15:47but if someone gets injured,
15:48tough shit,
15:49deal with it.
15:50That's how we view it.
15:55I could have,
15:56I mean,
15:56I was saying,
15:57I could have gone into this game,
15:59you know,
15:59knowing I had a sore shoulder
16:00and gone,
16:01I'll give it a go
16:02and hopefully I'll come through,
16:04but if I don't,
16:05I know I've got someone else
16:06who can come in and replace me,
16:07you know,
16:07you select 11
16:09and it's actually tactical.
16:11So,
16:11I feel like there is that room
16:14where you could actually
16:14manipulate it a bit.
16:17You know,
16:18the injury that I did have
16:20ruled me out of this game,
16:21but maybe if we did have that option
16:25in a,
16:26you know,
16:27pretty big game in a series,
16:28I could have gone,
16:29nah,
16:30this is worth it,
16:30but if I do go down even worse,
16:33then at least I know I've got someone else
16:34to come in.
16:35You know,
16:36part of that was,
16:37I can't risk doing this
16:40because long term,
16:41but also if I go down in this game,
16:43then that completely ruins
16:44the whole makeup of the team.
16:49So,
16:49I'm still heavily against it.
16:52Just sod's law
16:53that this had to happen
16:53the week after I said it,
16:54wasn't it,
16:55but my view has not changed.
16:57And last one here,
16:58it's fish.
16:59Ben,
16:59when we watch sport
17:00or cover sport,
17:01and in your case,
17:02you play sport,
17:03we tend to think that,
17:03you know,
17:04we've watched the best of it.
17:05This is perhaps the best
17:07that we've seen,
17:07and then sport tells us
17:09that there is a lesson
17:10bigger than that,
17:11and that's why it's real,
17:12not real.
17:13Where will you rate
17:14this particular series
17:15in everything that you've played,
17:17seen,
17:18and because in our case,
17:20we would rate it
17:20at the very top.
17:21Where would you rate it
17:22as the leader of your team?
17:24It's been
17:27a pretty special one
17:28to be a part of.
17:31It's been, yeah,
17:32full of ups and downs,
17:33ebbs and flows
17:34throughout the whole,
17:37throughout every game.
17:39India's been in control,
17:40we've been in control,
17:41then it's come back to them,
17:42then it's come back to us.
17:43So, yeah,
17:45to be a part of it
17:46and be able to experience
17:47five games like this
17:48has been pretty special.
17:51We had a similar situation
17:52here in 23 with the Ashes,
17:53where we had to come here
17:54and win the game.
17:55And that, again,
17:55was another special series
17:58to be a part of.
17:59So, yeah,
18:00that was 2-2,
18:01this was 2-2.
18:02So, yeah,
18:05it's been awesome
18:06to be a part of.
18:07Obviously,
18:07there is that,
18:08I feel that disappointment,
18:10but, you know,
18:12as a,
18:13yeah,
18:14for the game,
18:15for the wider game,
18:16obviously,
18:17you know,
18:18we want to constantly
18:19be promoting the game.
18:21The series has been
18:21great for that.
18:22Cool,
18:23well done.
18:24Thanks, Ben.
18:24Thanks, guys.
18:25Cheers.
