A rescue dog who was adopted in a terrible condition now spends her days at the beach surfing with her loving owner. When Risa Mara Machuca, 48, from Sayulita, Mexico, rescued her mixed-breed dog, Chia, the pup had been abused and was full of fleas and ticks, Risa said. After their first meeting, in 2020, Chia needed three showers, a haircut, and some serious love and care to be ready for her second chance at life. Risa helps run surf schools and tours through her company, Surf It Out, and one day Chia, a pug-Brussels Griffon mix, decided she wanted to try her paw at the sport as well. Having grabbed her soft-top board, Risa topped the top, and Chia jumped on without hesitation. The moment was magical, Risa said, and soon the pooch was confident enough to ride on surfboards with her owner and clients. Chia, who is believed to be between five and six years old, now spends her days as Risa's surfing assistant, especially helping younger children who may be fearful of water. Chia is also set to partake in her first surfing competition for dogs.
