00:0050 years ago, a young security guard walked into his workplace and into the line of fire.
00:20He took a bullet to the face and survived Malaysia's first international terrorist standoff.
00:27His name is Sukhdev Singh.
00:31Today, most Malaysians don't know his story.
00:35It was August 4th, 1975, when the Japanese Red Army stormed the EIA building in Kuala Lumpur.
00:42Actually, on August 4th, that morning I was not well, so I went to work.
00:49My mother told me, you are sick, so you better come back.
00:53When I went there, we were short of people.
00:58So there was only one man, and he told me, you go, you change yourself,
01:04and you come here, and I want to go and see a doctor.
01:06After he left, then the office downstairs, the AI office,
01:10they came and told me there's a robbery going on in the ninth floor.
01:15Five men, machine guns, 53 hostages.
01:25Sukhdev, who went to investigate, was shot under his right eye.
01:32The bullet destroyed his eye, shattered his balance, and left his jaw permanently misaligned.
01:39He lived. What followed hurt even more?
01:44Silence. No medal, no national honor.
01:48Just a plaque, a watch, a thank you letter, and decades of being forgotten.
01:54In these present times, it's very difficult to tell anybody.
01:59Because why? Everybody's doing their own.
02:03They're not bothered what you have done and what you should be given.
02:09After so long, nobody even remembers who I am.
02:14Unless I tell them that this is the incident, nobody knows, all forgotten.
02:20Sookhdev turned 79 on August 30th.
02:26His house, ravaged by termites, is falling apart.
02:30His body aches.
02:32And he still remembers every second of that day.
02:36This isn't just a story about one man.
02:39It's a story about how a nation remembers its quiet heroes.
02:43Or doesn't.
02:44Now Sukhdev doesn't ask for much.
02:47Just a working ceiling, a home that won't collapse in the rain,
02:51and to know that what he did still matters.
02:56You see, when you hear somebody talking something good on you,
03:00you have some, you know, initiative to survive.
03:06To this day, Sukhdev's courage still echoes.
03:10The question is, are we finally ready to hear it?
03:13Frankie Dacruz and Natasha Bust, FMT.
