One of Japan's best-known contemporary puppet theatres, Hitomiza, was founded in 1948. From the start it have been dedicated to a new style of puppet theatre and from 1970, they performed at their own theatre in Tokyo. They also provide training in traditional puppetry including 'otome bunraku', in which each puppet is operated by one puppeteer. They have performed puppet shows for adults, including Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Macbeth' and 'King Lear', silent puppet theatre including Edward Gorey's 'The Bicycle', and contemporary theatre.
