33:58How and where can we get the best and most for our buck?

34:01Good evening, I'm Amy Costelli.

34:02Steve Bunnell is on assignment.

34:04Lawmakers in Washington went at it today.

34:06Senators were almost ready to vote on an amendment

34:08that would have repealed the gas tax

34:11and increased the minimum wage.

34:13Then the fighting began,

34:14with some senators opposing the two issues being on the same bill.

34:17The repeal of the 1993 gas tax

34:20could immediately lower the price of gas by a nickel per gallon.

34:23In the end, no action was taken.

34:26Well, the rising gas prices have been a burden on the mid-state,

34:28but there are a few good deals around.

34:31News 21's Susan Harvey checked them out

34:32and brings us this report

34:34on how you can get the most out of your gas dollar.

34:36It is hitting us all in the pocketbook.

34:42Rising gas prices.

34:44We were around 99 and then it just started climbing.

34:48Three weeks later, that 99 cents increased to $1.19 a gallon

34:52at SAC BP Service Station in New Cumberland.

34:55And $1.19 is one of the best bargains around for a gallon of regular.

34:58We only make a penny or two out of the gas,

35:00but we work on a volume basis.

35:02You can save even more by filling up

35:04at Keystone Super Service on Old Gettysburg Road in Camp Hill.

35:08$1.18 per gallon of regular unleaded.

35:11Most other stations charge between $1.24 and $1.25 a gallon.

35:16You'll pay about $1.22 a gallon at most Turkey Hills,

35:19$1.23 at a Unimart or Sheetz.

35:21But those prices may vary a few cents,

35:23depending on the store.

35:25If you don't get about 25, 30 miles a gallon,

35:27you can't exist partly.

35:30Working, you work, and driving a truck,

35:32it's a big difference.

35:34How much more are you spending on gas, roughly?

35:38I think for me, I think just going back and forth,

35:40it works an extra $5 a week.

35:42It could be worse.

35:43It could be in Canada.

35:45It could be in France.

35:46It could be in England.

35:47Actually, I think the prices are higher than they were.

35:50I think it's going to go.

35:51So I'm not going to complain that much about it.

35:55You can get the most out of your gas dollar by using regular if you can.

35:59According to AAA, only 5% of motorists need to use the premium gasoline,

36:03so most of us can make do with the economy fuel.

36:06Other gas-saving tips?

36:08Keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure.

36:11Drive more slowly.

36:12Turn off your air conditioner and avoid car top carriers.

36:15Basic tips, but they will save you a bundle in gas money.

36:21Involuntary manslaughter charges are filed tonight

36:24in connection with the deadly crash in Perry County, April 13th.

36:28Michael Graham of Middletown faces involuntary manslaughter,

36:31homicide by vehicle, and reckless endangerment charges.

36:34Graham was the driver of a Ford Bronco that police say

36:37crossed into the other lane of Route 850,

36:40hitting a car driven by Christina Adams head-on.

36:42She died, so did a passenger in Graham's Bronco.

36:45Alcohol was not related.

36:47A prominent African-American leader is found dead in his Harrisburg home today,

36:51and authorities suspect suicide.

36:5457-year-old Kenneth Washington served as executive director

36:57of the Urban League of Harrisburg for 12 years.

37:00Dauphin County Sheriff's officials found his body

37:02in his North 2nd Street home early this morning,

37:04a gunshot to his head.

37:07While he helped solve other people's problems

37:10that maybe there were some of his own that he could not handle,

37:14and I'm sorry that the outcome has been so tragic.

37:17The loss of Kenneth Washington

37:19is a means for us a dark day and a dreary night.

37:24Washington's successor, Derek Spann,
